Welcome to Part 7 of our positive threads, where we explore all things Meghan and Harry. From the causes they champion and their business ventures to Meghan’s (and occasionally Harry’s 😉) fashion moments, there’s a lot to chat about. This is a drama-free space, so let’s keep it upbeat! High five to @queentim for the original inspiration.

And look how Sophie has redeemed herself. She's a working member of the RF, promoting excellent causes and representing the HoS.

“I was really touched when they said, it’s not just going to be a speech and a photo op. They want to leave something, leave a legacy,” Onyema said. “That’s very important to them, from my experience with them and their team—leaving a legacy and impact and really helping people in direct, tangible ways.”

So what did they leave, then? What is this legacy?

Answering my own questions, as the Sussexes have now made a public statement about this. It was a number of drum sets for one school, funds to upgrade a learning environment for children in a village of 3,500 people and funds to upgrade a “socio-economic gym” (I have no idea what that is!) in another school.

I wouldn’t call those legacy projects myself, more like small targeted gifts.

MagdaLenor · 24/08/2024 08:48

Yes, so the whole trip mostly benefitted the Sussexes, rather than any Colombians. No surprise.

I agree with you. A nice gesture and I’m sure they will be appreciated by the recipients, but it’s rather grandiose to describe them as legacy projects.

I have read that the donations amount to less than 10k.
Meghan’s wardrobe for the four day trip totalled $19,750 plus over $4000 for new jewellery. This figure does not include clothes and accessories reworn, vintage or gifted (such as the gold fan earrings gifted to her by the VP. An apt choice for a fan-girl!)

It would be shocking if the donation amount is less than half of what was spent on Meghan’s wardrobe. Even though she did to her credit showcase Columbian designers.

MummyJ12 · 24/08/2024 10:12

Further to my above post, it has been noted that they have pledged and so not actually donated anything as yet, apart from the drums. It seems like they’ve had to do some damage limitation due to the negativity surrounding the trip regarding how expensive they were to host.

JADS · 24/08/2024 10:24

The optics of the huge spend on security versus the tiny donation given are poor. This is why I now only donate to small local charities with demonstrable impact. I can thank H&M for that, so they have done some good!

Petitchat · 24/08/2024 10:35

Discounting the continuous bitterness and jealousy against them, they're looking really happy and more relaxed.

I particularly love the photo of them playing the drums together.

Why do they need to travel to Colombia just to have photos that show them looking “happy and relaxed”? Doesn’t that make it seem even more that it was all just for a photo shoot?

Maybe she uses pledge and donate synonymously?😉

There is only one 'winner' in this and it's not Colombia or the 'spare'. Feathering one's own nest springs to mind.

Philanthropic my arse.

Why do you need to be negative towards them?

I'm nearly 70 so I think I'm experienced enough to recognise real happiness or false.

There HAVE been false smiles in the past which is unsurprising considering the amount of negativity towards them.
However, I get the feeling they have risen above it now and looking and feeling their old selves.

A very strong couple.
I've seen posters crumble on mumsnet when ONE thing is said against them, so don't know how they'd manage with the amount of negativity that this couple have to endure.

Are you one of those posters?

lazybrownfox · 24/08/2024 10:59

Drums? That's it?

Petitchat · 24/08/2024 11:03

Posters who come on mumsnet on Saturday mornings to specifically pick holes in someone, must be very unhappy themselves.
Life's too short, it's Saturday. Don't waste it.

MagdaLenor · 24/08/2024 11:05

@Petitchat - it's Saturday morning and you're on here! 😂

I'm on dialysis so I've nothing better to do at the moment.
But when I come off at lunchtime me and DH are going to the coast for two days so looking forward to that.
I certainly won't be going online to pick, pick, pick at someone.
What a waste......

IAmATorturedPoet · 24/08/2024 11:09

@Petitchat -it's Saturday and you are on here defending a couple you don't know. Take your own advice.

Serenster · 24/08/2024 11:10

I think people are perfectly entitled to feel that when a millionaire couple make a visit to a far less developed country and treat it largely as a photo shoot for themselves, making grandiose statements that they want to leave a legacy and make an impact, and turn out to have gifted one school a few drum sets raised eyebrows is the very least they can expect.

The Sussexes are the ones lauding their own philanthrophy, remember. When the reality falls so far short of the puff, it’s difficult to see why they are so staunchly defended.

Maybe others are similarly occupied and/or indisposed.
Good luck with your dialysis 👍

They're a lovely couple and very brave.
Nothing wrong with admiring them.

Serenster · 24/08/2024 11:12

What specifically is admirable about their visit to Colombia?

What exactly have they done that sets them apart from any other Royals/Philanthropists/Celebrities working for Charities?

MagdaLenor · 24/08/2024 11:13

Nothing wrong with admiring them, nothing wrong with criticising them. Nothing wrong with discussing.

Petitchat · 24/08/2024 11:15

Thanks @MagdaLenor

It's four hours so the bum gets a bit numb😊
We get spoiled though, sandwiches, biscuits and cuppa 👍

MagdaLenor · 24/08/2024 11:16

I think sometimes women get admired for their outfits, and the admirers become fans. If you have a look at the start of this thread, and it's broad aim, it's about Meghan's fashion.
I like the style of Naga Munchetty, but I doubt she's flawless as a human being. (Sorry, Naga!)

Petitchat · 24/08/2024 11:17

Going to rest now before my little holiday.
Bye everyone
