I think a documentary on Meghan Markle might actually be interesting. I mean, who is she? In the short few years she's been widely famous, she has cosplayed:
- an American actress out of her depth dating Harry (maybe no cosplay, this one)
- a devoted fiancee looking forward to royal life (definitely cosplay)
- a dedicated member of the RF seeking to "hit the ground running"
- a sincere duchess, but one who didn't believe she wasn't getting paid for her duchessing
- a suicidal victim of extreme racism
- a feminist to whom nobody says no
- a humanitarian in extremis
- a woman so full of compassion that service is her purpose in life
- a woman who kept her LA agent and manager on retainer while all the above was happening
- a woman who got a prince of the realm to leave his birthright, his home, his family, his friends, his job
- a woman who brokered a tell-all interview with Oprah (Harry didn't do that)
- a woman who brokered a Netflix deal in which she sold her and her husband's soul for gold coins (Harry didn't do that)
- a covid-era volunteer a few times with baby-related /food donation charities
- a covid-era wannabe politician who preached about the importance of voting, women's rights etc in pre-recorded speeches
- a roving exiled duchess visiting Harlem and the UN for who knows what purpose
- a poet (the bench)
- recipient of many and various awards for who-remembers-what
- a podcaster
- a polo-wife
- a pregnant woman who had two children (not cosplay, this one - just saying all the above while she was a "young mother")
- a boho-chic cool kid who hangs out at Soho House properties and farmers' markets
- a staid denizen of Montecito who wears Max Mara, Chanel, Cartier, Hermes, LV and Balenciaga all at the same time
- now, apparently, an uber-homemaker a la Martha Stewart
Who does she actually think she is? Or rather, WHAT does she actually think she is? Nobody can be all of the above properly, there are only 24 hours in a day. I don't think she knows who she is at all. Since 2016 she's been all of the above plus whatever else I've forgotten. I don't think she knows where she fits. She keeps thrashing about looking for a natural home - but with people like her, if she's like the people I knew who she reminds me of so so much, there is no natural home because their natural state is to always be dissatisfied with what they have and want more. Their natural state is to be on the move, to not get caught out as an imposter on their way to higher peaks. These sorts of people make and shed friends and family quickly, they have no shame and are brazen; relationships are transactional, sometimes openly so. The drive is the hustle, they don't ever know peace. They're charming and are quick to make friends - they use physical closeness as a shorthand for actual closeness (hence all the hugging and cuddling and massive smiles and outsized laughs etc). They never actually do any work, because their real work is hustling trying to avoid doing the work and just looking like they're reaping the rewards of work. I think a quality documentary would be very entertaining!
