Some bonkers things that people on this thread have posted but not bothered to give any evidence for (even though I've asked):

-Meghan used surrogates and/or doesn't have any children at all

-Charles is an alcoholic

-Edward and Sophie did lots of weird shit to make money

I am reminded of Terry Wogan's interview with David Icke (who believes the royal family are lizards). David Icke thought the audience were on his side and Terry Wogan had to inform him,, 'they're not laughing with you David, they're laughing at you'

User14March · 24/07/2024 21:01

@CurlewKate agree.

AvrielFinch · 24/07/2024 21:04

That the power and unearned adoration they have inevitably makes most members behave arrogantly and badly.

User14March · 24/07/2024 21:08

@TheWoodlanders Sophie & ‘weird’ money making schemes may relate to ‘fake sheik’ debacle & Ed re: ‘unwise’, I’ll give you, ‘It’s a Knockout’. but not sure that was necessarily commercially driven. Hopefully OP will enlighten.

Surrogate/s, not bonkers theory, NB: Spare etc & Hollywood celebs. It’s not totally uncommon & women not always tell the whole truth as to why.

@Bagpussisnotmyhero

Prince Edward and Sophie did all sorts of weird shit to get money

I am 62 and have been reading royal gossip for entertainment most of my life and I can't think of one thing they did that would qualify as 'weird shit' what do you mean?

“Prince Edward is once again at the centre of an embarrassing row over the business interests of minor royals after a film crew from his production company allegedly attempted to film his nephew at university.”

& Charles & alcoholism, prob the alleged short temper and drinker’s nose/broken capillaries & incipient rosacea has led some to unkindly speculate.

Bulkypeepants · 24/07/2024 21:14

Harry isn't a full relative. Charles is clearly not his father.

smilesy · 24/07/2024 21:16

I think some posters are confusing “unpopular opinions” with “wild conspiracy theories “ 😂

TheBatsHaveLeft · 24/07/2024 21:17

I love the royal family but I feel as thought it is cruel to keep a family in such circumstances with such extreme public scrutiny. I mean Harry tried to leave, but he basically can't escape public scrutiny unless he goes and lives on Mars.

You could say that they can abdicate or give up their public role, but the world is so small and the media so intense that it's basically impossible for them, and losing their security would be terrifying.

I really worry for their psychological health tbh.

Having said that, I really love the royals and especially King Charles, who I think has really sound environmental views and is a genuinely kind and intelligent person.

TheWoodlanders · 24/07/2024 21:20

@Bagpussisnotmyhero thanks for all the links about Edward and Sophie. I remember all those incidents (I’m old and an avid reader of that kind of stuff). Yes, They did lots of things that were badly judged. But that’s not what you said. You said ‘they did lots of weird shit’. You deliberately chose to use language which would be used to talk about voodoo, swinging or witchcraft. Instead, they used to be a bit grabby and naive and sometimes just silly. You’ve deliberately sensationalised ordinary poor judgement.

User14March · 24/07/2024 21:21

@TheBatsHaveLeft it’s a gilded cage but the £££ is enormous & with creativity you can bespoke role to tally with own interests. E.g Queen & racing/horses, Balmoral.

OurDoorz · 24/07/2024 21:22

Prince Phillip was a wannabe mass murderer! He once said "In the event that I am reincarnated, I would like to return as a deadly virus, to contribute something to solving overpopulation."

True. I am a corporate wife, having been a corporate daughter, so I live rather a similar life, but on much much a smaller scale.

Do you think they are happy? I always wonder. I hope they are.

@TheWoodlanders egg freezing is the norm for 30 something actresses in her previous circles. If you eventually get a break & want career longevity & keep your job I can see why even if I don’t agree. I witnessed a beautiful American actress, working on a show in Canada, openly talking about future surrogate plans. This wasn’t well received by Brits.

If MM said she was using a surrogate for one or both children for health reasons & to keep figure etc, if the case. How would that have affected UK popularity etc? Be seen in firm?

If she did I imagine only a very few would know & they’d be NDAed.

If she'd used a surrogate, any children born would not be in the line of succession. A child must be "heir of the body" - literally born of the woman in a legal marriage, and the child of both parties to that marriage, to be in line to the throne. And the same applies to all titles of honour/primogeniture inheritances - in fact they've been explicitly excluded from adoption legislation. Archaic, but true.

Public opinion would be less of an issue than that, I imagine.

How you got that from feckin weird shit is beyond me. Weird shit it was. And all my friends thought so too. It’s how we talked at uni about stuff that was….you know…WEIRD. 😂

User14March · 24/07/2024 21:31

@TheBatsHaveLeft I’d find charities in Asia & Seychelles & Bermuda, :) nature, horticulture etc, win win. You want to learn Ju Jitsu from the best, bang, speed dial. Etc. Prob happy yes but for the main job (?) you need to have a certain disposition. You’ll be remembered in every history book so you can legacy plan with foundations etc.

sonjadog · 24/07/2024 21:32

I think Kate is dull and not particularly attractive. I don’t understand why people gush over her.

I think William has been and will continue to be unfaithful.

perfectstorm · 24/07/2024 21:33

I just think it's a bit weird.

If you'd passed Kate in the street as a teenager you'd not have looked twice. She was just a bog standard normal human being. Now, because if who she married, she's seen as somehow supernatural. Same person, but got married. Instant stardust.

All celebrity is weird. You meet someone very famous and they're just a person who happens to work in a job where people are fixated - so, we obsess over who speaks lines on camera, but have no real interest in who writes those lines, even though they are by definition relatively likely to be more interesting. It's just weird. Spend time with them, and they're just people like anyone else. But for the most part, they are at least famous for something.

The royal family are literally famous for being born into the royal family. And seen as somehow vastly superior to everyone else to the point just their arrival at a building creates excitement.

I have nothing against them at all. They didn't create the system and it costs them a lot in freedom, choice, above all privacy, though the massive privilege and access must compensate! But... it's just so weird.

Haveanaiceday · 24/07/2024 21:35

I think all this stuff about being a "working royal" is pretty much nonsense apart from the odd state occasion. There's no need for them to do hundreds of engagements etc. They can never do enough that way to be worth the amount they cost and in a way it makes them less special if they turn up to the opening of a packet of biscuits. Their real job is to look grand in a crown and live in historic palaces.

CathyorClaire · 24/07/2024 21:35

Haven't RTFT but and off the top of my head:

I think TLQ consistently prioritised the firms' interests and future way above those of the nation's and duty to the country came a very poor second.

I think Charles knew about the Sir James Savile rumours (among others) and ignored them because he thought he knew better.

I think an undebated 53% rise in income (never to be decreased whatever the circumstances) disappearing obscurely and all while 'working' royal numbers are on the wane is an abomination.

User14March · 24/07/2024 21:37

@perfectstorm all the more reason for keeping quiet ;) taps nose, if so…

Could this be a reason keep on titles/acknowledgement they wanted from BP/Queen?

Seriously I didn’t realise. Biologically theirs doesn’t trump? ‘ Science’ not in pace with law. What if health condition?

He went on fricking Oprah and wrote a sensationalist book. He’s very evidently NOT trying to avoid public scrutiny 😂

It's very clear-cut. Doesn't matter what the reason is; bloodline is all, and you have to have given birth within the marriage. So nope. No chance they'd go the surrogate route.

They altered the law around succession to the throne in 2013 (to allow birth order and not sex to determine place in line, and to allow Catholics on the throne) and could easily have changed it then, but they didn't want to. The adoption legislation, likewise, explicitly excludes titles of honour, and that's also fairly modern.
