The RF was strong armed into performative grief by Tony Blair and a baying mob of Diana fans. The children should never have been greeting the public, taking their bloody flowers and listening to their hysteria, never mind walking behind her coffin. I wish the queen had told Blair to sod off.

There is more to it than that though.

The queen's refusal to recognise Diana's death in any way came across as cold, classist, arrogance.

By the time she got her act together they needed to parade the kids in order to protect her. The children, as they then were used as human shields. There was a very real danger - they had no idea how that crowd would react. Tony Blair saved her actually. (I really disliked him and his politics btw).

CurlewKate · 26/07/2024 08:14

@ I will always give grieving people the benefit of the doubt when they make decisions that, in retrospect, may not have been the best"

So will I. But I think it was unlikely that many members of the RF were grieving, except the boys and possibly Charles. And even if they were, they had plenty of non-grieving advisors. The behaviour of the public was bizarre and deeply unpleasant. The press was ghoulish and opportunistic. The RF was cynical and doing what it had to do to survive. Nobody comes out of it well. But the RF were the ones who could have refused to buckle to the mob. And they didn't.

CarmelaBrunella · 26/07/2024 08:15

I remember the Queen speaking on tv, @yesmen and giving a tribute to Diana. Now this may well have been the work of Tony Blair or Alistair Campbell, but she did not "refuse to recognise Diana's death"!

BustingBaoBun · 26/07/2024 08:15

Totally agree. They were used as pawns. The royal family manage things alright up to a point until there is something different, unexpected ...Diana's death, Harry and Meghan, Andrew and his paedophile chum etc.

Then they are absolutely useless and I am sure run around like headless chickens trying to say and do the right thing but in the process making it 100 times worse because they haven't got a clue and are completely unable to relate to ordinary people

CarmelaBrunella · 26/07/2024 07:56

To be fair, @TheCadoganArms that happens with fans of all sorts of people, celebrities and music fans. I think it's a harmless hobby, like being a follower of Taylor Swift.
I was in Windsor at the time of Harry and Meghan's wedding, and mostly people weren't too crazy, seemed just about the a nice day out, there was a great atmosphere and it was all positive and happy. They were obviously royal fans to an extent, but it was a spectacle.
I suppose if you want to go out and cheer people like Meghan and Harry you're bound to be a royalist, though.

Whatever you think of Taylor Swift you can't deny that she is an extremely talented hard working woman. The same can't really be said of the royals, most of whom come across as a bit thick despite having the finest education money can buy. I don't like the fact that William and Harry would have had zero chance of flying helicopters for the RAF/Army in any other circumstances if they were not royals so were given a free pass over way more capable candidates. I'm not some hard-core republican but equally if the UK became a republic tomorrow I would not lose sleep over it.

I think you have a point. The late Queen wanted to keep them up at Balmoral, there was huge pressure to present themselves.

This has all been rewritten - the late queen wanted to keep herself up in Balmoral.

They were not under pressure to show the boys, they were under pressure to show themselves.

They ran the clock down so much that they completely the public's goodwill.

They used the boys to save the queen.

12FreeRangeEggs · 26/07/2024 08:46

Fergie was prettier than Diana, facially

CarmelaBrunella · 26/07/2024 08:49

You're right, @TheCadoganArms - but my point was seeing the crowds at Harry and Meghan's wedding. I don't think they were all a bit weird, it was a spectacle. They were probably all royalists wanting to cheer the couple on, I'm responding to people who think it's very weird or sect like to join in with that..

In my opinion, there are clearly issues there which I’m sure the family are doing their best to work with.

I find people who obsess over the royals, follow them in the fawning press, buy similar clothes for their kids or camp in the streets overnight to catch a glimpse of them a bit sad and pathetic.

You do know that the Royal children are dressed in a variety of casual clothes as well as formal things? Not all children are dressed from JDSport and all their first names start with K or J or whatever the current trend in certain sectors is.

Does that also go for football fans, and people why buy their children team kits at hugely inflated prices?

I'm very aware the royal kids are dressed in formal and casual wear. The point being is that when George wore some high street brand shorts or whatever said shorts were sold out within 24 hours. I find that level of slavish imitation a bit sad and pathetic.

sausawyee · 26/07/2024 09:12

Is that the same for the posters on here who rave about Meghan's clothes selling out and who look for dupes and tell us about putting it on their Christmas list @TheCadoganArms ?

If one of your kids gets joy 'following' a team and you dont mind spending £80 on a replica arsenal shirt then fill your boots. At least Declan Rice or Bukayo Saka provide some kind of entertainment and are talented footballers. Who sees an unremarkable royal toddler in a pair of unremarkabke shorts and thinks 'oooh I shall rush out immediately and buy those for my son'?

sausawyee · 26/07/2024 09:36

Come on now we all know it's not all sports related. 😀

But a toddler wouldn’t know it was wearing a football kit either. That would be the parents choice. I agree it’s different for an older child

sausawyee · 26/07/2024 10:49

I think it's obvious now that attacks on the Royal children are being deleted so perhaps those types of post can stop now.

User14March · 26/07/2024 10:55

I think re: walking behind gun carriage at Diana’s funeral, it wouldn’t happen now. 30 years ago nearly.

Usual classism on MN.

@TheCadoganArms ok you do you and let others do theirs 😂

@MrsLeonFarrell "I agree with this. It's so easy to blame the royals for the spectacle that was Diana's funeral"

It is easy. Because it was their responsibility. A completely cynical decision to appease the mob.

I hope they’ve forgiven themselves.

sausawyee · 26/07/2024 11:13

@AvrielFinch is that the same then for people slagging off Prince George's outfits? Is it ok to criticise "up' ?

This is true. The Queen wanted to keep the boys up at Balmoral, out of the glare of publicity and to give them peace and time to come to terms.

But the baying mob (supported by Blair) got their way and they all had to come down to London and be seen to be grieving!
