I don’t spend much time thinking about it.

I think your mayor got people bussed there because he was keen to tell the border states they should suck it up and manage. He certainly changed his tune once he was in their shoes.

The debit cards and other benefits are kind of baffling. I am a little 🤨watching my hard working coworker pay out-of-country tuition for his son when he and his family have been waiting for more than a decade for citizenship. That college kid is as American as me, but being treated like he’s not wholly welcome here now that he’s at university. Oh, and he and his family left for a few weeks now because they are required to leave the country every so often to maintain his status. Why the rules for him are so different than if he’d snuck in, I have no idea.

Now I have to poke fun at myself for saying I don’t think much about it.

I don’t ever look at an individual and wish they had less. But overall I think there is room for improvement.

I have to think about this because of where I live and my job. But my grandfather entered illegally and went on to become a good US citizen. A lot of the asylum seekers that I work with want to become good US citizens.

The money spent on them is not being spent correctly. This decision was done by our elected mayor. Just because someone is elected doesn't mean they are any good.

I’ve had friends that lived here illegally who were highly productive and remain so now, as legal citizens. None of them had debit cards and housing given to them upon arrival though.

It’s interesting to think about this. I never felt I should judge it. But it’s stark when you spend time with people working through the process legally and they see other benefiting from breaking the rules.

We had such high hopes for your mayor. I’m sure you did, too.

TLDR - the sort of person who is happy for their taxes to go to the already rich Royal Family is more likely to begrudge a birthday cake put on the SNAP card than the sort of person who doesn't want their taxes to go to the Royal Family, but to people in need

What an astonishing generalisation. Anything to back that up apart from your entrenched prejudice against the RF and their supporters?

For the record, 30% of my income goes to taxes. I'm pissed that the food being provided in the shelters is spoiled, inedible, or just not available. I don't mind paying the taxes but I expect them to be spent on reputable companies that provide decent services.

I don't begrudge the Bidens their salaries. I do begrudge our mayor asking for donations to pay for his personal legal fees.

I personally don't care what people buy with SNAP cards but have been stuck in groceries lines with people who do as my local supermarkets don't have self-check.

One of the reasons that governors from other states are bussing their asylum seekers to NYC is because NYC was legally obligated to provide shelter and benefits. This had become a source of controversy:
https://www.nbcnewyork.com/investigations/migrant-crisis/nyc-right-to-shelter-rule-settled/5228845/#:~:text=The%20right%20to%20shelter%20has,its%20right%20to%20shelter%20laws.

That's very interesting. My aunt lives in NYC and is in her 80s. Over the last couple of years, conversations with her inevitably involve a rant from her about asylum seekers in the city and how much public money is being given to them. I can't tell if this is her becoming old and a bit erm racist or there is an actual problem. (I do love my aunt but I think she needs to stop watching Fox News)

Bemused, I feel like you about taxes. My local ones are getting changed around in a way that means they will go up for me and my husband. But I feel good about how the money is spent by my local leaders. They are working to make this a better place for everyone and have long term sustainable plans. Someone with less will pay a little less and we will pay more. That’s ok.

On a federal level, I do personally begrudge every life-long politician who started out average and after years on a normal salary now owns millions of dollars worth of property and investments. I just wonder where did Joe Biden got his money? Nancy Pelosi?

It’s a whole different kettle of fish than the duchies and the sovereign grant. It’s obviously pure graft.
