I don’t care. Who would care this much if they weren’t royal? Why does anyone care about the royal family? They bring in tourism but apart from that? I just don’t get it

Luckily, you don't have to care, and nobody cares that you don't care.

How in the name of all that's holy is this "distasteful"???!!!

I think it's to with it being a rear view....

It is a delightful picture. What a day out at the beach should be. Joyful, happy and the chance to be a bit silly and caper.

Reminds me of this one:

Ah now. That’s a bloody lovely photo.

Maybe you would have a point if I wasn’t genuinely interested in understanding Why anyone is so obsessed about the Royal family and their photos more than any other family and their photos, but I sense that you’re not going to bother answering my question and continue attacking me instead

I'll give you a clue - you are on the Royal Family board. Perhaps another one would suit you better? Rather than harp on about how you don't care and don't understand why anyone cares, to people who don't care what you think. Makes sense, n'est ce pas?

BadPennyForeverTurningUp · 21/06/2024 17:54

As per that comment, If anyone fancies putting up their joyful family photos on their own thread, I’d be delighted to say how lovely they are.

Till then, happy to sit on a RF board, passing comment on royal photos.

Which some have a little problem grasping the concept of clearly.

It's always funny when posters allegedly get their panties in a bundle on the late queen's behalf to criticise .....pictures of the queen with her hands in her pockets, shock horror

https://cdn.images.express.co.uk/img/dynamic/130/590x/1674513_1.jpg

Like these? Angela Kelly wrote about this photo shoot in her book. She and the Queen planned it because the Queen liked the idea of being photographed in a different way. The 'hands in pockets' was her own deliberate choice of pose.

Posters also go on about 'royal protocol' not allowing this or that, with no supporting evidence. In Robert Hardman's book, which I've just finished, he quotes the Queen as saying 'We don't do protocol. We do manners.' An example some posters would do well to follow.

A Regency Mumsnet would have had the claque all chattering about the vile impudence of Mr Gilray and his foul scurrilous cartoons and how wonderful William was and that his long absences in Germany would help unite the 2 countries, and all the talk about "Mrs Jordan" was a nonsense. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Wha'???

IsoldeWagner · 21/06/2024 18:03

"we don't do protocol, we do manners"
Love it. Some folks should follow that lead.

I read a funny anecdote about the Queen Mother, famous for having a staff of gay men.
"Could one of you old Queens bring this old Queen a drink?"

I'd imagine she did that quite a lot with her penchant for gin and Dubonnet! 😎

But it's not a 'family photo' - they have released it to the press - it is a publicity photo, a marketing piece for the Royal Family, an institution they want the gullible public to buy into.

We, the public, are paying for the camera that took that picture, the press office that organised its release, whatever trip the Waleses went on to take the picture, the food they ate on the occasion, the clothes they are wearing in the picture.

So, as a member of the public, I think I'm allowed to have an opinion on the use that has been made of my money, and in this instance, the photograph represents very poor value.

They don't owe us anything - they don't have share any photos with us. Why on earth do you think it's your money? That's crazy! It's a family photo they have chosen to share. Personally I think it's beautifully done and it is more about what the picture represents than it is about the composition.

Some people really, really are determined to take offence at anything the RF does. A pic with no monetary value apparently doesn't represent 'value for money.'

How sad is it to bring everything down to monetary value all the time.

Is it really so difficult to understand that people might be interested in one of the most famous families in the world??

I pay for my interactions with others, where a cost is involved. I pay for any medical treatments I receive. I pay for my use of 'the grid'.

(Most) civil servants and other state funded workers represent reasonable value for money. But the Royal represent appalling value for money when you consider what they receive versus what they actually do. Leaving aside Catherine's illness this year, the Waleses were low on the list of hardest working royals last year.

Catherine only did 128 engagements in 2023- even if they were all full day engagements (which they weren't, a phone call can count as an engagement), that is very far from a full-time job.

We are taken for idiots by the Royals; they know they are riding a ridiculous and outmoded gravy-train, that's why they punt out silly photographs like this, in the hope people will be fooled into thinking they add some kind of value - clearly, many of you are indeed fooled by this ploy.

This boring old non argument again.

It's well for you that you are able to make so much provision for yourself. That's your choice. I think were you to delve into the value for money of most government departments you would get a sharp shock!!

Uricon2 · 21/06/2024 18:25

In a world where the Kardashians, Love Island etc are devotedly followed by millions, we are asked why we care about the RF. The one with a 1000+ year history that is entwined with that of our ancestors.

It's not really the photo itself, although it's a poor photo - photos of the backs of people's heads might be OK in a family 'memories' context but unless they have supporting artistic and technical merit, shouldn't make it beyond that context.

I just despair when people keep fawning over the royals, for no reason at all. Catherine takes a snapshot into which clearly little effort has been put, and people fall over themselves to gush over it. We'll never rid ourselves of the drain that is the royal family while people think like this.

Unfortunately for you, the majority in this country want to retain the RF. I don't know why you are so worked up over a single photo. It's not good for your blood pressure. How is liking a photo, "fawning"? Carry on despairing though.
