Those who protest at such events remind me of the Baillie Gifford row about sponsoring book festivals. Now a number of book festivals are likely to fold given the sponsorship has been withdrawn. Be careful what you wish for even if it is a democratic right.

Sadly, yes

FWIW I'm a republican myself, but wouldn't turn up to something like this; why spoil a nice day for those who enjoy it when the point can be made perfectly well elsewhere?

Unfortunately for the movement, it seems to have been taken over by those who just engage in performative protests, rather than legitimate activism to raise support for a Republic.

I was a soft Republican for years, but the latest iteration of the movement offers nothing to inspire me.

I've grown to appreciate the stability a Monarchy brings - especially seeing how many other Republics are under strain at present.

PracticallyYesterday · 15/06/2024 13:24

As a supposedly balanced national broadcaster, the BBC should have given the protesters some airtime - I don't mean taking over the whole show, but 5 mins to express their views in a similar format to all the services people who were interviewed 1-1.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 15/06/2024 13:27

Why? it's about a state occasion, not an opinion piece about why some people would prefer Britain to be a republic.

MartyFunkhouser · 15/06/2024 13:30

I’m an apathetic Republican, but I appreciate their effort and the fact they got heard and seen. I’m sure they would have been removed only a few years ago.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 15/06/2024 13:27

Because they are a publicly funded broadcaster so they should do their best to reflect the spread of views across the public who fund them. A 5 minute interview with a republican wouldn't turn it into an opinion piece. It's no less relevant than some RAF high-up explaining why the occasion is important to them and similar.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 15/06/2024 13:36

I'll repeat - it's a state occasion, so that's what the BBC broadcast. The people saying how it's important to them are the ones who have put in a lot of hard work and training to make it happen and look flawless. Those and the monarch are the ones it's about - not some tit in a yellow sweatshirt shouting 'not my king' and trying to get on the TV so mum can see him.

I'm sure if the BBC thought the nation wanted to hear from them, the BBC would be giving them their five minutes. The numbers of the crowds in the Mall suggests the BBC got it right.

I hope the publicly funded broadcaster will be equally airing the views of right wing comedians and politicians during Have I Got News For You; airing the views of fed up non football fans during the coverage of the European Football Championships; airing the views of GC females during Drag Race. Etc, etc

Beafyudders · 15/06/2024 13:37

MrsDanvers

You’d be better off trying to explain String Theory to a rhododendron.

BlueParrotRedParrot · 15/06/2024 13:38

The motly crew of republicans will get their views aired during the news. They always do.

LemongrassLollipop · 15/06/2024 13:39

After RF go inside following the appearance on the balcony, what happens? Do they have a posh family lunch together at Buck Palace or do they disappear off, get in their joggers and have a relax?!

Uricon2 · 15/06/2024 13:41

Big cheers when Kate came on to the balcony.

They didn't interview any of the crowd. Their only interviews were with those taking part or whose family member was taking part.

Shame about the rain. I'm expecting my son to be soaked when I pick him up!

How lovely for him to have been there, he’ll have so much to tell you!

TheFirmBiscuit · 15/06/2024 13:46

I didn't watch it I imagine the sycophancy fawning meter was turned up to 11 with ponderous breathless facts about arcane traditions that probably started in Victoria's time but are regarded as timeless incarnations of our Royal heritage. Graham tells me that had a good innings for the Republic , so all bases are covered.

So I guess it's back to business as usual with the 2 Minute Harry Hate stretched out to a couple of hours !

Anne is doing well with her flighty horse

She's the best person to be sorting a frisky horse though.

I was flicking while waiting for Kate and other members of the RF to be shown.

Would not have bothered if they hadn’t been there.

Edited

Would be a bit of a non event without the guards and other regiments though...

crumblingschools · 15/06/2024 13:57

@Username1010 do you know what trooping the colour means?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 15/06/2024 13:58

1748, actually.

Good for Graham. Just hoping he had his vest on so when the pics get published we don't get to have his nipples inflicted on us like we did in May 2022. Some things just shouldn't be seen in public.

JudgeJ · 15/06/2024 14:00

Username1010 · 15/06/2024 13:08

George looks tired and bored tbh.

Charles looks exhausted.

Edited

Charles will probably be feeling exhausted, it's such an important event in his year and he will be ready to put his feet up and watch the football!
George seemed very quite and thoughtful, he is old enough to have some understanding of his mother's illness and must feel at least a bit worried about her today.

Does not out of the woods mean the cancer hasn't gone, she's not had the all clear or she could still die?

I know no one knows but I was just wondering.

I had biopsy results this week and mine were ambiguous so looking for clarity really.

I think it would probably mean that treatment is still ongoing - it could be that she’s ok , but they are just continuing to be safe as I’m sure she said before it’s more preventative . Also probably to stop more speculation if she’s not seen .

i only watched briefly and then looked at photos of Kate. No disrespect to the armed forces. I appreciate lots of people like to watch this stuff. I don’t. It was really nice to see Kate looking well and happy.
