I don’t agree with the RF or parading the kids out and don’t believe for a minute the kids enjoy these things and wouldn’t prefer to be playing sports with their friends
It's part of what they do. I bet the kids look forward to it, and I don't think you need to feel sorry for them. What an experience! All those amazing horses, the music, the choreographed marching, the riding in a coach. Wow! Are you really suggesting they'd swap that for one day, just to kick a ball around with their friends?
And not all children are automatically sporty anyway. Plus, I'm old-fashioned but I believe that having to sit and behave through something which might be a bit over your head is actually good for you when you're young. It's a life-skill that has gone out of fashion, but it doesn't do any any harm even if they're bored for an hour. Joan Bakewell wrote something about this - remembering how, in school assemblies, her mind would go 'off piste' and her imagination and creative ideas could flow. I really believe that a bit of peaceful boredom where we have to sit quietly sometimes is therapeutic in our crazily frenetic age.
