The royal family

Do you think Prince Andrew should be made to leave Royal Lodge?

Another (trashy) article in the press today saying Andrew needs to downsize out of Royal Lodge and make way for Wills & co.

Apparently he doesn't have the fund for its upkeep, it's falling in to disrepair.

W & C obviously could make better use of it.

He's been there 30 years so I can understand he doesn't want to move out of essentially his family home. My own view is he should be in deepest darkest nowhere, but wondered what others thought.

Is there any reason at all to leave him be?

Well they can't blame this one on Harry, although I'm sure they'll find a way

No "they" won't.

Afternoon! You know me, I'm not rude or personal, so I won't lower myself to respond to your remarks! I thought you had previously noted my respectful attitude.
My thoughts on Andrew? He should be in prison, but sadly he's not. He's absolutely vile and I'm happy to see him evicted, but sadly he'll probably land on his feet.

Surely Andrew can get up a ladder and paint it himself, he’s got bugger all else to do with his time.

Mylovelygreendress · 01/06/2024 12:36

I think that’s the point - he isn’t maintaining the place . The agreement states that the interior should be redecorated every 7 years and the exterior painted every 5 years ( which should have been 2023). Allegedly.

Yes, apparently he hasn’t abided by the lease obligations, but I thinks it’s an exaggeration by the OP / press to state it’s falling into disrepair. He spent £7m + (of someone’s money) renovating it when he moved in 20 years ago, and it’s clearly been maintained since - £220k is reported to have been spent on the roof last year. Failure to adhere to the maintenance terms is unlikely to lead to a forfeit of the lease anyway…just a potential big bill at the end.

The issue is he has no income and is reliant on the King and his ex wife (who also lives there) to support his lifestyle. Without them he can’t afford to live there, and while the Queen was happy to support her ‘favourite’ son I am not sure his older brother will be so willing, at least, not indefinitely!!

Quite. He must have learned a few practical skills in the Navy.

I don’t care where he lives, but if he has a lease then he’s entitled to stay where he is.
I don’t like him or his past lifestyle and friends but he isn’t Stalin.

@mrsdineen2 no one in the UK is a "subject" of Andrew, loyal or otherwise.

Technically, people in the UK are subjects of the monarch - the monarch is the reigning king or queen, so now that is Charles.

Most people in the UK are no more "loyal" to, or in any way "appointed" the monarchy & the Royal family anymore than someone in your own country, presumably, lives under a head of state which they did not vote for.

It doesn't show you in a flattering light to uniformly mock & show contempt to people living in a country with a monarchy simply because of where they were born.

Well, Prince Andrew should leave, full stop, go off and live somewhere private - there is plenty of property on the royal estates - and stay out of public view. Arrogant git regularly gets himself photographed out riding. If he's attending family stuff that will be filmed or photographed, he should discretely remain as hidden as possible, instead of leading at the front as he is wont to do. And he can take his wife/ex wife with him.
I cannot see that there is anything he can do to redeem his reputation. John Profumo managed it, true, but then his sleazy story did not involve underage girls and a proven paedophile friend.

She wasn't under age.

I think they have plenty of other properties each of them why are they fighting over this one? If his mother promised him he'd be able to stay in it why is KC changing tact now, the late Queen would not be happy

As I understand it, Andrew's got a lease on this one and doesn't want to move out.
I suspect, as pp have said, Charles has had enough of him and wants rid, but it's not that easy.
Other posters upthread seem well informed and have more detail on this.

Just to add to that I think prince Andrew is a piece of work

JSMill · 01/06/2024 14:17

Apparently he can't afford to maintain it so he should leave. I think he thinks Charles will eventually give in. I really hope he doesn't.

Yes, I wonder if it's a bit of a stand off.

And to add - I don't believe he can't afford the upkeep. At one time he was cited as the third richest royal. He's always seen tooling around in top of the range luxury motors and Fergie has acquired a £5m mews house relatively recently.

If he's not paying for repairs it's because he doesn't want to.

I believe one of their sleazy rich friends bought it. Neither of them have or have ever had jobs, they're bankrolled by other people.

crockofshite · 01/06/2024 14:21

You'd think mummy would have made provision, left him a bungalow in Woking or something.

My understanding is yes William will pay for maintenance himself

Doesn't that mean we the taxpayers are paying for it, as all the money he has is from us ?

No, because William gets all his funding now from the Duchy of Cornwall.

What? who says this? He has the Duchy of Cornwall.

He has a lease but he's not complying with it - according to the lease he has to pay for the upkeep of the building and he is not doing it.

Yes, I wonder if it's a bit of a stand off.

And there is a big age gap between them, 14 years? or am I getting confused with Edward. Maybe TEN so I think Andrew's plan is to wait until he outlives Charles and then he'll be so old himself that it would be spun as cruelty

LolYouGuysLolYouLotLolHaveLife · 01/06/2024 14:34

Charles did stop funding Andrew's yoga instructor

Meghan does yoga doesn’t she?

Perhaps she can throw a few respectful shapes his way.

I'm sure fantastic services can do him a very good deal.
