The royal family

Do you think Prince Andrew should be made to leave Royal Lodge?

Another (trashy) article in the press today saying Andrew needs to downsize out of Royal Lodge and make way for Wills & co.

Apparently he doesn't have the fund for its upkeep, it's falling in to disrepair.

W & C obviously could make better use of it.

He's been there 30 years so I can understand he doesn't want to move out of essentially his family home. My own view is he should be in deepest darkest nowhere, but wondered what others thought.

Is there any reason at all to leave him be?

If it were up to me, the UK would become a Republic tomorrow.

However, whilst we've got this ridiculous anachronism of a Royal Family, we have to accept that normal rules don't apply to them.

No, we don't.

Should public pressure become great enough, those rules can change.

I imagine Charles has said to Andrew:
The house is too big for you (and Fergie).
You are not maintaining it as per the lease and need my help to pay for the maintenance.
Frogmore 'cottage' is available and is a more suitable size. Or even Adelaide Cottage where the Wales' currently are.
Per the lease I can take Royal Lodge back in 2029 and I intend to do so.
If you leave now instead of in 2029 I will give you £x million as compensation.

Andrew is probably being stubborn to try and increase the amount of compensation he gets. But as it seems likely he will outlive Charles, Andrew needs to not upset William as he will need William to fund his lifestyle for a decade or two.

It must be hard to have been number 2 in line for c30 years and now be outside the direct line spotlight. But he hasn't helped himself with his attitude and behaviour. The articles about Royal Lodge are probably placed by Charles' team to show Andrew he has no public support and ready him for further firm actions by Charles to get him out asap.

No, it's not hard to be no2 then go down the line of succession. That's hereditary monarchy for you.
Not everyone is the heir to the throne, and no2 has every opportunity to carve out a productive life for themselves.
Anne was no 2 for years before Andrew was born. You don't see her behaving like this

elessar · 02/06/2024 08:46

Andrew is odious, and yes he should absolutely vacate the property. His refusal just shows his disgusting entitlement and lack of any sort of humility about how he's behaved and the position he now occupies as a disgraced royal who is lucky to have any sort of lifestyle funding. I hope KC is able to force him out.

Willy's apparently been eyeing up RL for a while.

I suppose it's always possible that hideous uncle knows he'll be booted in due course and is planning to dump his nephew with the costs.

Andrew- Nygard- FBI

I was wondering if Andrew ever spoke to the FBI after they requested he do so. I found this in the Daily Express from late last year.

Prince Andrew was urged to speak to the FBI again after the Duke of York's friend and fashion mogul Peter Nygard was convicted on four counts of teenage sexual assault in Canada.

Andrew had reportedly stayed at Nygard's mansion in the Caribbean.

Nygard, 82, was convicted of four counts of sexual assault and will be sentenced at a later date.
US attorney Spencer Kuvin, who represents multiple women abused by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein told the Mirror: "If Prince Andrew is innocent, he should provide a full interview to the FBI.

"His continued silence in the face of multiple close friends being convicted of sexual assault – Ghislaine Maxwell and now Peter Nygard – reeks of a guilty conscience.”

Then there were the many mentions of Andrew in the Ghislaine Maxwell trial court documents released earlier this year.

I feel that Andrew won’t be moving anywhere and that he will be staying in his huge mansion.

The story of how Charles wants to throw Andrew out Royal Lodge has been recycled quite a few times before this.

BemusedAmerican · 03/06/2024 04:37

Charles should have an air quality inspection done. If it shows a high rate of mold, he can claim that Andrew's refusal to repair has created a health hazard and Andrew must be evicted for the sake of his, Fergie and the corgies's health.

Spelling edit.

Slightly misleading when in Anne’s day she was always going to be leapfrogged by any younger male siblings. The rules changed to ensure Charlotte could not be leapfrogged.

Looks like the Monarchy can be ‘modernised’ when it suits the family.

Not the point. Anne knew she wouldn't always be no2 and carved out a life without public bitterness and bile.
Charlotte will not be leapfrogged by a younger male. She will by any children of George.
I don't think it's a problem to modernise by changing male primogeniture to that of order of birth, thus stopping the discrimination of females.
Suitable modernisation indeed.

TheFirmBiscuit · 03/06/2024 11:13

The more light you shine on this grubby little family the more repellent they become to the majority of the nation struggling to make ends meet.

BemusedAmerican · 03/06/2024 12:39

@TheFirmBiscuit we have a recently convicted felon running for office who is threatening his former jurors and judge. The RF seems mild in comparison, especially since Andrew can't leave the Windsor environs if he wants security.

The convicted felon will, worst case scenario be gone in 4 years. Whatever dodgy peopke the Monarchy manages to produce, we are stuck with them, like it or not.

BemusedAmerican · 03/06/2024 13:01

He can destroy a lot of lives before he goes. He can actually make policy and cause international change.

YourPinkDog · 03/06/2024 15:30

At least Trump is still accountable to the courts. The Royal Family are not.

DelectableMe · 03/06/2024 15:43

Yes they are.

YourPinkDog · 03/06/2024 16:11

Andrew avoided accountability. The FBI wanted to question him. Andrew hid in Royal Palaces so he could not be questioned. It is why a private civil suit was issued. And he avoided court for that by paying an alleged £12 million.

YourPinkDog · 03/06/2024 16:13

The Royal Family are exempt from hundreds of laws.

DelectableMe · 03/06/2024 16:17

They're not above the law because no-one is.
Also, this is a constitutional monarchy.
Parliament is sovereign.

He avoided accountability. Like a lot of rich men do.
He's not above the law.

YourPinkDog · 03/06/2024 16:20

Many laws do not apply to them. This is just one example of farming laws in wales that Charles is exempt from. This is being above the law. The law does literally not apply to them.

King Charles

King Charles exempt from Wales' farming-law prosecution

Documents show the minister who approved the exemption was "not happy" about it.

DelectableMe · 03/06/2024 16:21

Right, well take it up with your MP then because it's the government which makes the laws.

YourPinkDog · 03/06/2024 16:23

So you finally accept the Royal Family are literally above the law as many laws do not apply to them. Thanks.

Parliament is sovereign.

They are the only people who can get amendments to potential legislatioñ before it becomes law, so of course they comply with the law, they have negotiated opt outs from all the bits they don't like already! Fine, have a Royal Family, but every single exemption they request should be openly debated in Parliament so everyone knows about it. The culture of deference we have from public institutions, from Parliament and the press means they can get away with whatever they like and we get fed puff pieces and sycophantic nonsense instead.
