I feel the same about CEOs of large companies. They seem to be paid what I consider a ridiculous amount and I find it hard to believe they work harder than nurses, to use an example. But I don't actually know what a CEO does so how do i know how hard they work.
Being the CEO of a large company is, at a minimum, a 9-9-6 kind of job. Working from 9am to 9pm six days a week. Frequently more.
But in addition to the long hours, CEOs get paid a lot because they are carrying the can for the whole company. If something happens that causes a reputational crisis, or there ms a downturn in your market, the CEO will be in the hot seat. A report in January showed that more than a quarter of CEOs who left global listed companies in 2023 were fired.
So, do you fancy being Dame Alison Rose, CEO of NatWest, sacked last year for being unwise in her conversation with a journalist sitting next to her at a dinner (when you are a CEO you can never let your guard down in public, ever). Or do you fancy being the CEO of M&S, ditched because you’ve not been able to crack the problem of rising global costs and a market flooded with poor quality clothes produced in overseas sweatshops? (Who can?). Or Paula Vennels? (Leaving aside my fervent hope that I never lose sight of the vital question -like are we the baddies? - as she seems to have done, no way would I want to be her right now. But if politics, the markets, your luck, changes a bit any CEO could face that)
