On May 23, Netflix released its most watched list of the last half of 2023. This included the release of Prince Harry’s ‘Heart of Invictus’, which didn’t draw the audience numbers hoped. It only had 300,000 views, a very small number when compared to the 71.6 million achieved by the #1 show, ‘One Piece.’

Their best performing series ‘Harry & Meghan’ managed to garner 1.9 million views and ‘Live to Lead’ remains their greatest failure with just 100,000 views in the last half 2023. The first half wasn’t much better.

With numbers like this, Harry & Meghan need another massive hit for Netflix, otherwise I don’t see much of a future with the streaming giant. By any stretch of the imagination, given their profiles, these numbers must be hugely disappointing to the bosses at Netflix. And I don’t think a documentary on polo nor Meghan’s cooking show is going to get them the numbers Netflix expects from them to justify the big money. Especially given the lack of followers on Instagram that American Riviera Orchard has. Kourtney Kardashian’s son, Mason had more followers after an hour of him launching his instagram account apparently.
Public interest is not the same as popularity.

Often repeated but not true. Some errors at times but considering the unrelenting microscope that is applied unnaturally to her there were bound to be some natural and harmless misremembering. Even her special moment with Harry before the wedding was blown out of proportion by the media when it decided to focus on the legal aspect as opposed to what she wanted to convey i.e. their love was real and meaningful to them both. Hence their ‘marriage’ but not a formal, legal one.

Meghan was and is allowed to speak up about her unique experience as a biracial American woman that entered a weird and antiquated royal life. She was/still is claimed to be a liar about those experiences and how her mental health was severely impacted. Lo and behold we later find out that this very topic was addressed by her to Charles in letter format. Two people were then named by the Piers creature.

The Anti Meghan Machine will continue to try and annihilate her. We seem to live in a callous post-Brexit age of wanting to destroy the first woman of colour to enter into an archaic institution steeped in a murky past of bloody imperialism. If she cannot be silenced then other means are deployed in an attempt to nullify, disparage, demean, negate and demonise her.

Well done Harry and Meghan for making a successful life beyond the Royal Institution. Whether that be the already successful book deals, shows, multiple awards, charitable endeavours, Invictus Games, family life or attracting ‘big hitters’ as friends. Network away. Everyone does it.

I don't think it's an "unrelenting microscope"

It's a series of lies and inaccuracies, that have never been explained or apologised for. They came directly from the couple (interviews, books, documentaries)

Their lies are likely to be criticised - just like everyone's are.

Especially when the gaffes continue (eg accepting free flights from someone who is wanted in US for money laundering and bank fraud - not a lie/inaccuracy, but seriously poor judgement) and they remain silent on African Parks

Yeah, what’s he going to say. Who disparages the horse they made a huge bet on before it’s finished the race?

There were bound to be some natural and harmless misremembering..

Like completely forgetting you have drafted several pages of notes for a journalist writing a book about you, so he’ll have details of your family and your views on them, to put into his book. Then specifically instructing one of your team to meet with him and pass the notes on. But somehow when asked by the court if you’d passed information onto the journalist for his book, you inexplicably can’t recall it at all and vehemently deny having done so?

Meghan and Harry both have exhibited a complete disregard for telling the truth many many times. It’s not harmless misremembering, no matter how you try to spin it.

Another aspect to blow up out of proportion. Gosh, the media has done a great job.

The court found that her communications with an assistant were not pertinent to the court case itself. I certainly see her as being brave enough to position herself for battle against a behemoth by bringing it.

What happened:

Write a letter to your father Meghan the senior members of the RF suggest.
She goes to great length to get it right and asks for support in doing that (from an employed adviser who is there to assist the principals).
She understands that trust regarding her father is a big issue. It could be leaked. She would hardly want to hurt herself regarding its contents.
Meanwhile, the media is still going to town about her and her father.
She then tries to put the loss of this relationship with a poor excuse of a father behind her. She writes said letter and is commended by the assistant for its right tone. She gets married - legally - in the gold fish bowl.

After the wedding:

Meghan endures years of abuse from the press and becomes traumatised by her experiences. Meghan has her baby. Meghan moves country again. Covid hits. She is busy trying to secure her family’s future and a home is bought. She also miscarries.

So much has happened, it is full on. So many huge changes occur and even just one of these can floor any individual. Yet, we still expect her to be some paragon of virtue with a flawless ability to remember every single thing. No, it is almost demanded of her to remember every single aspect of every single thing she did, say or write before marrying into the institution, developing suicide ideation, giving birth, being contrasted constantly with Kate, lectured to/bullied by William and blamed for anything that can be dredged up. The tabloids even give a name to handing in her Royal notice. Megxit!

…she won her court case the letter was not in the public interest. It was an invasion of her privacy.

I agree. And it's also not the case that controversy guarantees views. It didn't for the Invictus documentary.

I think the cooking show could be a success if it were a glorified reality show. "At Home with the California Royals" sort of thing. But if it's true that they're not even filming in their own home, then it sounds like that's not the plan. They are both rather pompous and take themselves very seriously. A reality show is not grand enough for the Duke and Duchess and their monogrammed doormat.

She leaked her own letter.

She was scolded for lying to the court.

Serenster · 30/05/2024 17:55

The court found that her communications with an assistant were not pertinent to the court case itself

Indeed. But Meghan lied about them. That’s completely relevant to any opinion about her personal integrity (or lack thereof, in this case).

It’s the definition of a pyrrhic victory - Meghan won her court case, but torpedoed her reputation in doing so because she was caught out lying to the court - a choice she made entirely by herself.

Serenster · 30/05/2024 17:56

(And someone being caught out intentionally lying to the court is not a small thing. In many industries it is quite literally career-ending).

AliceOlive · 30/05/2024 17:57

from an employed adviser who is there to assist the principals

Let’s humanize this man and call him by his name, Jason Knauf.

I do commend his absolute bravery. Jason is the one that stood up to the behemoth. He spoke out to the royal family, about members of the royal family bullying staff. He did this not knowing if he would lose his entire career. Likely with the bullied staff themselves terrified of the repercussions. He took a huge risk to his reputation by telling one brother about the treachery of another and his wife.

I admire him greatly and also think it is amazing that William did right by him and gave him a new position. He’s a stand up guy.

But I expect that’s exactly what Harry and Meghan were thinking. “How dare you. You exist to serve us.”

Harry who created nicknames for his grandmother’s own hand picked advisors.

AliceOlive · 30/05/2024 19:22

Also, Jason Knauf was the Communications Director at Kensington Palace and Communications Secretary to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Describing him as “their assistant” is not appropriate to his role, expertise or experience.

He has a brilliant list of achievements behind him, and continues to contribute his skills in support of many charitable organization.

Jason released the statement defending Meghan when she was dating Harry. I believe he did his best to support these two, until doing so came into conflict with his own values.

I imagine they were also quite taken aback, in that they assumed everyone who deals with them has been gagged. So they can say what they like about other people, but no-one can speak about them.

AliceOlive · 30/05/2024 19:30

I think so, too, Serenster. Their supporters vilified him while ignoring the facts and what those facts show about Meghan and Harry.

And no wonder, Jason’s sworn testimony was the real fly in their ointment. It proved that they were actually doing the things they complain about.

He also had no incentive beyond doing what is right and fair. In fact, many people would remain silent rather than stick their own necks out the way Jason did. No one in that type of role wants to become part of the story.

Assuming this wasn't written by AI, (which it has every sign of) then there's one piece of advice I'd give this poster - which is to avoid cliches like the plague 😅

Nice alliteration though.

That's from early March. It's all a bit vague really - when did Sandros actually say these words?

Britons “devour everything” about Harry and Meghan as the couple are set to release four new projects, Netflix's chief has said.

What are the four new projects for Netflix? The article also says that

Bajaria [Netflix chief content officer] did not give any further details about what the projects may be about but it is understood that the “unscripted” projects may be another documentary.

The article also mentions Pearl, but the BBC reported in 2022 that that got cancelled (as in dropped) by Netflix.

Tbh, I think it's not a very good article and I would be loathe to base an opinion upon it.

I think there's a difference between wanting gossip about Harry and Meghan and wanting to listen to them spouting forth on their favourite topic - themselves.

Wickedlywearynamechanged · 31/05/2024 10:42

I think it’s a shame that lots of people didn’t watch Heart of Invictus. I only started watching it because of Harry’s involvement and all the gossip and criticism originating from social media in the lead up to the release of the documentary . But it turned out to be one of the best documentaries I’ve seen in ages.

But it was long. And although far from boring (I found the stories and life experiences of competitors and their families compelling) 5 episodes of about I hour each is a lot to expect people to watch now. Only I don’t know how they have made it any shorter.

It might never have been a success in viewership numbers. But critic’s reviews were much aligned with my experience of the series. They rated it a ‘success’ as a documentary.

I don’t even like watching sport generally. And now I’m looking forward to the next Invictus games.

DelectableMe · 31/05/2024 10:45

It's a great thing. Unfortunately I think people have now identified the Invictus games as something of a Meghan and Harry show. If they could dial that down a bit, it would be better.

Even that may have had some novelty value at the start, if only for the weirdness of watching two people who enjoy massive unearned privilege whining about how hard their life is. But it's rather boring now.

"Archewell Productions" hasn't really come up with anything other than their own 'documentary' and the Invictus series. And that was nearly a year ago. The 'cooking show' and the 'polo documentary' won't be streaming for some time. It's hard to argue that this is a good return on Netflix's investment, although I'm sure some will try to do just that.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 31/05/2024 11:44

They do?

H&M seem set to release a lot of projects that never actually see the light of day.

AliceOlive · 31/05/2024 11:48

People do devour anything about them. I don’t think that translates to being fascinated with anything they produce.

DelectableMe · 31/05/2024 12:02

What about that 40x40 thing Meghan started on her 40th birthday? Did that come to anything?

AnnieSF · 31/05/2024 12:11

It's like everything else - a load of talk and then nothing. I worked with someone like this - she was a PITA. Full of ideas but never did anything. It was all in the name of seeking job promotion. They create a lot of dust / that's it.
