Part 5 of (mostly ๐Ÿ˜‚) drama-free and positive threads, delving into all things Meghan and Harry. Whether itโ€™s the causes they support, their business initiatives, or Meghanโ€™s fashion choices (Harryโ€™s too, on occasion ๐Ÿ˜‰), thereโ€™s plenty to discuss. Just a pro-tip - that there may be use of MLE terms and discussions of dupes - you might want to exit stage left if these things offend. Hat tip to @queentim for the original inspiration.

That's one take , another highlights his deep commitment to Invictus. Through this organization, he has been instrumental in providing essential comfort and support to thousands of struggling veterans worldwide. For him, this endeavor transcends mere public relations and superficial appearances. This dedication is precisely why some detractors attempt to undermine or dismiss his accomplishments. Like the Princes' Trust or Duke of Edimbugh Awards it is great legacy and one to applaud.

I agree with this
This is not a vanity project for Harry. It is not something to pass the time
This is something he is truly passionate about and I commend him for his efforts.
I think that his marriage to Meghan has given him confidence and he looks very happy.
As another poster said, he has found his purpose in life Isnโ€™t this what we are all looking for?
His detractors attempts to undermine the visit have proved to be futile imho.

On the question about the veterans having to spend their own money to be part of these games how isnthay any different to the paraolympics? Where athletes have to raise the money themselves or get funding, sponsorships etc to participate.

Same with the Olympics right, you have to find the money to train yourself up to that level etc.

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/05/2024 08:45

On another thread a poster commented Meghan would have looked lovely in clothes from the designer Lisa Folawiyo. I do agree and the more conservative clothes from the range would be better as Meghanโ€™s outfits show a lot of flesh in a predominantly Muslim country. Personally I donโ€™t like them at all. She has a great figure but the styles are wrong for her.

I agree that Harry is passionate about Invictus. I don't think Meghan has found anything that she can invest her time and attention in in the same way. I hope in the future she can find her passion because I do think that part of her problem at Invictous is that she is aware it is Harry's thing and she isn't quite sure where she fits and that may be why she sometimes seems awkward at their events in a way she doesn't when she does things without Harry.

On the question about the veterans having to spend their own money to be part of these games how isnthay any different to the paraolympics? Where athletes have to raise the money themselves or get funding, sponsorships etc to participate.

Same with the Olympics right, you have to find the money to train yourself up to that level etc.

You are comparing apples and oranges. Entry into the Olympics and the Para Olympics is first and foremost about the sport. Sporting bodies are not charities, they are highly regulated, run commercially and have significant barriers based on the sporting prowess of the competitors, who will on the most part have been competing since they were youngsters, backed up by grass roots clubs and support systems. Only the elite get to enter, and once you get to that level, then sponsorships and funding from things like the National Lottery are available. The olympics is not based in charitable status and charitable aims. The IOC is a non profit organisation that distributes funds, but not a charity, and the Olympics are privately run.

Invictus is a charity to help service people, not to help sportspeople. It appears to be about rehabilitation through sporting participation at Invictus - the games itself and being there is the charitable aim, not sporting prowess. it is a charity encouraging service people to improve their mental health and life chances through that participation at Invictus itself, along with their families being there to support them. The sport is secondary to the participation at Invictus. From that point of view, as much of its funds as possible should be made available to the service people to help them get to the games, as that would be part and parcel of fulfilling its charitable aims.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 12/05/2024 09:20

Iโ€™ll also add that by the time a sportsperson gets to Olympic level, the sport is effectively their career, they are professional sportspeople, or at least that is the aim of most sporting bodies these days through funding models and sponsorship. Obviously thatโ€™s not the case for every single sport or every single competitor, but for the major events it will be and the professional/career sportsperson is the goal that can be aimed for and supported. Going to Invictus is not going to be the career of a participant. They will be having to work, house themselves etc, go about their normal lives and carve a future. Invictus participation is therefore a โ€œluxuryโ€ on top of normal life. And as such, thatโ€™s another reason why the charityโ€™s funds going to the participants to allow them to be there is important, more so than paying a rich manโ€™s expenses.

Lovely thread, @skullbabe - even got me posting for the first time in recent memory!

Lots of great pics of this so far flawless trip in here:

Shout-out to Invictus for getting Meghan to join a panel with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director general of the World Trade Organization. Not sure many folks realise how much of a big deal this is. Dr Ngozi is more used to sharing panels with central bankers, ministers of finance, global economists and heads of state at places like the G7 or Davos.

Having attempted (and succeeded) in getting her to one of our panels, I can attest she is in high demand. So well done Invictus, Nigeria, and Meghan for pulling this off.

Living in a highly patriarchal society where many men have more than one wife, most know what it is to have a step mother and heaven help you your own mother, the earlier wife, dies when you're young you're bound to see the extent to which a step mother can go to ensure her non bio children don't have any audience or care from their father.

Tom Parker Bowles, Camilla's son was in Nigeria just weeks ago promoting his book and royal cuisine. My Nigerian bank sent me a couple of emails inviting me to attend a session or something. I thought it was very odd but not surprised!

One thing Nigerian women find hard to condone is a side chick becoming a wife. Only in very rare cases and with the unreserved consent of the older wives and children.
Top that up with M&He's compassion! It'll be lovely all the way!

Thanks, Delectable.
I'd heard one was coming out and I enjoy a recipe book with anecdotes and the history of the recipes. I'll go and seek it out.
Sorry, skullbabe, I won't carry on chatting about cookery books, as I realise this thread's not about that.

Edited as I realised "skullbabe" is all lower case - sorry!

LumiB · 12/05/2024 10:34

Interesting how it's silent on the fact Camillas son was in Nigeria promoting a book...noone said a thing ๐Ÿค” surely the son of the Queen consort of the UK in a country that isn't safe...where the guidance is not to travel....I mean where are all these comments for him?

In Australia; Invictus Australia is funded by Government Grants, corporate sponsorship and, of course, Public donations.

Invictus Australia works collaboratively with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to support former serving members and their families to attend the Invictus Games and other adaptive sport activities.
https://invictusaustralia.org โ€บ invict...
Invictus Games

From my reading I have learned that The ADF (Australian Defence Force), has partnered up with Invictus Australia and the AIS - The Australian Institute of Sport (where the Olympians and Para Olympians and Commonwealth Games competitors train) and they have developed and now run programs for Veterans and Military Personnel. Itโ€™s a combined effort. The NRL (National Football League) is also involved. I donโ€™t know who else but thereโ€™s more involvement from
other sports organisations.

Itโ€™s not just about the Games, all sorts of group sports events take place around Australia under the banner of Invictus Australia. IA employs people (usually Veterans) to actually get other Veterans to training, sporting and social events. There are all types of sporting events - from surfing to sailing and hiking and wheelchair rugby and so on. As well as social events where Family participation play a big part too.

I assume similar happens in countries like the UK. I have read that Invictus UK receices government grants/

Also, I cannot find any proof at all that Harry is paid anything by Invictus. This rumour and innuendo seems to have originated on social media. I have read - on the Invictus Games organisation website - that all proceeds Harry and Meghan would have received from the I AM INVICTUS documentary go to the Invictus Games organisation.

I get the impression that there are a number of posters on this thread, and on Nigeria 2 thread, who have not actually watched the Netflix documentary series. I really recommend it. The documentary is very much about the competitors and their families.

Wickedlywearynamechanged · 12/05/2024 11:09

I mean the Invictus Games documentary series. To be clear.

Beautiful fabric in that wrap. She looks cool and comfortable in that outfit.

The pattern mixing on so many of those Lisa Folawiyo designs shared up thread is next level. Utterly beautiful.

I think Dr Ngozi has been really kind and warm about Meghan - sheโ€™s said some really lovely things.

Sorry, just looking to follow your comments.

I get that you say that Nigerian women wonโ€™t condone a side chick becoming a wife (but casual misogyny is fine, I presume?). But if the Charles/Diana/Camilla scenario had played out in Nigeria, wouldnโ€™t Charles have then been the man in the highly patriarchal society with both of them as wives? And if so, that presumably would all have been fine then?

Thanks for your informative post it does seem smiliar ish to other sporting events where grants are used and so on.
