If you had bothered to read the threads, you will see nobody has described Nigeria as "the back of beyond". Those are your words and yours alone.
If it wants to avoid criticism, maybe Nigeria should start acting like a democracy, treat all its people equally and afford them all the dignity to live unafraid. It is not racism when it is rightfully criticised for what happens within its borders. It's actually racist to give the Nigerian regimes some sort of free pass for their pervasive human rights abuses because of the colour of the skin of the populace.
An estimated 62,000 Christians have been murdered since 2000, described by the International Committee for Nigeria as genocide and the "Silent Slaughter". At least 140 Nigerian Christians were slaughtered in a mass killing in December 2023.
Since 2019, there have been 735 mass abductions in Nigeria. There have been 68 mass kidnappings in 2024 alone. At least 1,400 students have been kidnapped from Nigerian schools since 2014. According to the BBC, 280 students were kidnapped in March of this year.
In 2022, Unicef were reporting that Female Genital Mutilation of girls is on the rise. "Female genital mutilation (FGM) remains widespread in Nigeria. With an estimated 19.9 million survivors, Nigeria accounts for the third highest number of women and girls who have undergone FGM worldwide."
The persecution and prosecution and punishment of homosexuals was crystalised by Nigeria in the Same Sex (Prohibition) Act of 2013. Described by Amnesty International as, ".... brutal homophobic persecution [hitting] a new, unthinkable low." The maximum punishment in the states that have adopted Shari'a law is death by stoning.
Nigeria's economy is not doing so well at the moment, both due to the worldwide economic crisis and domestic policies. Perhaps concentrating on feeding their populace who are suffering due to steep inflation, rather than spending money on something like Invictus would be a wiser move for Nigeria. Not because I hate Harry, but because these types of events (Olympics etc) tend to leave countries with a bit of short term kudos and a load of long term debt and white elephant stadia.
