To continue the discussion.

I thought the comparison with the Duke snd Duchess of Windsor (last post on the previous thread) was interesting.

A visit to a dodgy regime, (Nazi Germany) because they would call Wallis HRH and make it a quasi-royal tour.

Of course, at that point Nazi Germany had a dodgy human rights record, but it was before the horrors of the Holocaust.

Let's face it, with the security and human rights issues there is no way the IG could happen in Nigeria. So that is sn excuse.

I don’t get the sense they feel they need to fit in. Sharing a stage with such highly accomplished women, the red strapless dress made her stand out as different to them. She is different and perhaps sees no point in trying to disguise that obvious fact.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/05/2024 13:44

So once a person has traced their lineage to a region/tribe and that person visits/connects with the region. They are accepted as a “daughter/son” of the soil. They are welcomed “home” in a sense.

A bit like American presidents going to see their Irish roots.

BemusedAmerican · 12/05/2024 13:45

When she was wearing the white dress, she was given several dresses. There is a photo of two women giving M very meaningful looks as she takes the dress.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 12/05/2024 13:46

Yes, that skirt is very nice. Elegant and appropriate. White blouse much better than vest top, too.

queenofarles · 12/05/2024 13:51

When Doria’s Ancestors came to the US in late 18th or early 19th century , there was no Nigeria , the area was known as Sudan and upper Guinea ,
And Bay of Benin and bay of Biafra .
her maternal ancestors could have come from any country in the west coast as there are no actual records or geographical boarders. She just should be proud to be part western African and that’s all.

AliceOlive · 12/05/2024 14:14

Meghan and Harry seem to be behaving as if they are experts on Nigeria, giving advice on mental health to the Nigerian people. Children and wounded veterans. But they have never been in those shoes.

Diana showed humility on her visits. She sought to learn from the people she met, rather than acting as if she had some grand wisdom and strength to share.

It is such a glaring difference.

Yes, she is American - but when speaking about African-Americans, there is some nuance.

As we all know, becoming an American was not a case of migration, but forced, with no trace of family name.

So once a person has traced their lineage to a region/tribe and that person visits/connects with the region. They are accepted as a “daughter/son” of the soil. They are welcomed “home” in a sense.

So I’m assuming, that’s the reason there’s so much emphasis on her ancestral roots during this trip.

I suspect we will never hear again of her 'ancestral roots' after this trip.

Wasn't she exploring her 'ancestral roots' in Malta a few years back?

It’s so amazing that ten years ago we didn’t even have access to the dna testing we have today. Accuracy will continue to improve. There are records of the passages so it’s possible to think one day more information may be available to ancestors of enslaved people.

BemusedAmerican · 12/05/2024 14:25

The two dresses that she was given were perfect co!ors for her.

shenandoahvalley · 12/05/2024 14:35

Meghan is a hollow vessel. She has always taken on the ephemera and requisite persona for the setting she finds herself in, wearing each thing as a costume. The single constant has been her drive for self-furtherance and she’s done very well on that front. This is why she clings so desperately to the title and to Harry: she is inhabiting the Duchess and Princess personas 100%. This is who she thinks she is now (not realising this is what she is, totally different). Hence the ability to say with a straight face “my country” and “I see myself in you”, or my personal favourite “I’m well aware little girls look up to me as a real life Princess and so I have to be a good role model” (or words to the effect).

Time and again Meghan demonstrates she is a woman of no substance. She’s unexceptional, circulating in a world of many exceptional women. The only interesting part of the Nigeria farce is IG vs Archewell vs WellChild, Nigeria-UK diplomatic relations, how the media are reporting this in the U.K. and the US, and what the RF or the govt are going to do (if anything) about eg Harry inspecting the troops or standing to attention while God Save the King is being played. And who’s paying for all of this.

ToCoffeeOrNorNotToCoffee · 12/05/2024 14:44

Is that an ostentatious cross necklace she's wearing in a predominantly Muslim country? Interesting choice.

The two are very out of their depth.

I wonder why they are trying to cosy up with Nigeria? Is it to show they get a warm welcome in (African) Commonwealth countries? Are things not working out in Caliland and they're looking to move to Africa?

Does anyone here know more about Nigerian British relations? Anything interesting there? (other than their colonial past).

I read that the crucifix was Diana’s

ToCoffeeOrNorNotToCoffee · 12/05/2024 14:54

Well then, it's getting weirder and weirder 😂.

I’m thinking there is a typo in your post because you mentioned Sudan, which is in North-East Africa.

Anyway, it’s possible for one to narrow down their ancestry to tribal regions. For example the Fulani tribe(in general) do not reside in the coastal regions.

I’m not a scientist, but there must be good reason for DNA results to come back as modern day Nigeria rather than Gambia for example.

It’s VERY American to claim to be part of a nationality that your only link to is that your great great great granny came from a certain country. When lived in the US for a bit and DH, who is Scottish, got fed up of Americans who’d never left the west coast, saying “I’m Scottish too!”. Very few realise how offensive it is to the rest of the world because it also plays on big fat stereotypes too

Edited

This is so very true, but then most individuals represent nothing but themselves and aren't in a position to cause even more offence on these kind of visits

Happily H&M also represent nobody except H&M, which is probably just as well for those who host them

There is a good reason and you can find out more online. It’s been discussed here. Very common results for Americans of African descent whose ancestors were enslaved. But may not be accurate. DNA samples are limited. It’s all very complex.

Also want to note that there are Americans from Africa who migrated here much more recently. Let’s don’t erase them. Culturally as different as I am from new immigrated people from the countries of my ancestors.

Just under half of Nigeria are Christians

Dingo33 · 12/05/2024 15:25

idk what the DNA tracing is like in Africa, for Asia when we first did 23&me it only showed country by country but now it is a lot more specific identifying provinces in China.

BemusedAmerican · 12/05/2024 15:29

@Dingo33 I had the same experience with the tests I took with two other companies. As they get more samples, the results become more accurate.

No it’s not typo .

In older European Maps the land south of the Sahara was known as Negroland , in Arabic it’s translated to Land of the black people , Sud in Arabic is black, this is how we get the name Sudan.
modern day Sudan was always known as Nubia, and to this day there are tribes in Aswan and along the borders of Sudan and Egypt that call themselves Nubians to distinguish themselves from other tribes.
Western Africa was predominately Muslim for centuries, and had lots of Arabic words mixed into their language , the whole area was an important trading route.

jeffgoldblum · 12/05/2024 16:01

Wow @queenofarles !
That's some interesting facts! Are you a history buff ?
I'm always interested in learning more about these topics 👍

BigWillyLittleTodger · 12/05/2024 16:01

Meghan looks so much better today in both outfits, I really liked the yellow dress in particular, the colour really suits her.
