To continue the discussion.

I thought the comparison with the Duke snd Duchess of Windsor (last post on the previous thread) was interesting.

A visit to a dodgy regime, (Nazi Germany) because they would call Wallis HRH and make it a quasi-royal tour.

Of course, at that point Nazi Germany had a dodgy human rights record, but it was before the horrors of the Holocaust.

Let's face it, with the security and human rights issues there is no way the IG could happen in Nigeria. So that is sn excuse.

Plus her outfits on this trip have been inappropriate for the country she was visiting- far too much flesh on show. I will refrain from commenting in detail on creases, length of frocks, poor quality of fabrics and buttons straining in button holes (white suit jacket). As usual, she was inappropriately and messily turned out. Attention to detail, my fat arse.

That doesn't matter! She's still disrespecting her hosts.

A necessary compromise in a commercial enterprise.
They are not there as diplomats.

JSMill · 11/05/2024 22:20

@ChimneyPot they are supposed to be there for charitable reasons.

"A commercial enterprise"?

Please buy these poorly styled clothes which are entirely unsuitable for the events at which they are being worn?

She flew all the way to Nigeria to hawk beach party dresses? Wouldn't she have been better off staying in California, where they might have been appropriate?

I have just looked at the Invictus Games website, in the News section. There are articles about the 10th anniversary service, nothing about H&M's trip to Nigeria.

It seems unlikely that Nigeria would be a potential host for the Games in the foreseeable future, given the security situation.

Maybe the 'promoting IG' angle may not be entirely true.

Edited for typo

Disrespecting their hosts is a necessary compromise in a commercial enterprise? Really? I wouldn’t have thought any commercial enterprise which manages
to piss people off would be based on good foundations

GlitchStitch · 11/05/2024 22:38

Did she really call Nigeria "my country" in her speech. How anyone can still defend these two grifters is beyond me. And they are destroying Invictus.

JSMill · 11/05/2024 22:40

@OneHeartySnail I don't get your point.

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/05/2024 22:40

Michelle Obama, Amal Clooney and Melinda Gates are dressed appropriately. They show class and sensitivity. The flesh, red and zebra dresses and flats along with the white suit are the sort of thing my almost 16 yo dd might come up with if I told her we were going somewhere nice and she needed to ditch the trainers, joggers and mini skirt for the day.

It’s a bit like Harry going to Germany and calling it ‘my country’ . His ancestors are much more recent than Meghans.

It's a fucking awful message that your role models need to be people who look like you. Prejudiced, polarizing, self-limiting and dismissive of amazing people who do amazing things in this world, whatever their colour. I'm assuming she doesn't think white little girls should dismiss incredible black women (and men) of achievement because they don't look like them. I'm glad I have brought up my mixed race children to have better values and a better view of potential role models than this stymying crap.

Well yes. The trip increases their profile.

I was sitting having lunch in a US airport yesterday scrolling on MN and Meghan and Harry in Nigeria were on some news programme on the TVs around me.
The clothes she wore reached a bigger audience than if she wore them to a local beach or market in California but the market remains the same.
American holiday or casual wear rather than appropriate for a diplomatic visit to Nigeria.

Their hosts knew who the were inviting and did it for their own reasons. Respectful dressing may not have been a deal breaker for the hosts either.

MacavitytheMystery · 11/05/2024 22:56

So she’s merching the clothes? Is that it?

friendlycat · 11/05/2024 23:50

Meghan’s choice of clothes are really most odd and seem so inappropriate for the occasion. Every single outfit is wrong, not just one miss. They seem so glaringly mismatched for each occasion. The backless dress especially so.

StartupRepair · 12/05/2024 02:04

It's ok not to be ok. This is such a fatuous message in a context where resources are limited and there is a completely different culture around mental health. Also coming from one of the most privileged men in the world who was ashamed when his wife wanted mental health support.

Paint and turpentine do smell rather nice, as do some felt pens. Creosote beats the lot.

Do you ever kiss a picture of your mother? I do. Yes, I know he wasn't kissing it, but if he does in private I would not think it strange. Does anyone know who painted them?

I LOVE the smell of paint and when we painted our new home not long ago I was v upset with DH for buying odour free paint.

When I was pregnant I used the have smell cravings rather than taste cravings. I used to open our fire lighters and take a big whiff 😂 it’s a wonder DD doesn’t have 3 eyes 🤣🤣

IcedPurple · 11/05/2024 21:47

What is the point of that 'speech', in a country where virtually everyone is black?

Because she can’t help but talk about herself. I watched the whole video and it’s all “I love that im Nigerian” and “This is my country”. I wonder if she knows she does this. She’s Carrie Bradshaw!

But yes a bit odd for a woman who is, sorry, largely white presenting, to be making ‘inspirational’ remarks on race representation to a room full of black women

It’s VERY American to claim to be part of a nationality that your only link to is that your great great great granny came from a certain country. When lived in the US for a bit and DH, who is Scottish, got fed up of Americans who’d never left the west coast, saying “I’m Scottish too!”. Very few realise how offensive it is to the rest of the world because it also plays on big fat stereotypes too

Indeed.

The people of Nigeria have quite different MH needs than “someone said something mean about me”.

AliceOlive · 12/05/2024 03:29

There is a difference though between someone talking about their ancestry and someone calling a country they never stepped foot in “my country”.

They gave Meghan a truly lovely welcome and having seen the forum I can understand exactly why anyone would want to be associated with these women.

AnnieSF · 12/05/2024 04:34

@AliceOlive I watched an item about this and the Nation of Nigeria is a modern concept as opposed to the many tribes who made up this area in the years gone by. You can be seen as descending from certain tribes and an area but not a specific country. Of course she will have West African heritage - in fact her % is lower due to her being biracial. The average for non biracial African Americans is about 75%. "My country " - It's all cranked up for the show. She's not special in this respect.

Yes it smacks of exactly that thing that " the west is right so let's go at it ". Here we come in on a flying visit being accompanied by 10 armoured trucks but yes we are just like you. It's a bit offensive.
