To continue the discussion.

I thought the comparison with the Duke snd Duchess of Windsor (last post on the previous thread) was interesting.

A visit to a dodgy regime, (Nazi Germany) because they would call Wallis HRH and make it a quasi-royal tour.

Of course, at that point Nazi Germany had a dodgy human rights record, but it was before the horrors of the Holocaust.

Let's face it, with the security and human rights issues there is no way the IG could happen in Nigeria. So that is sn excuse.

I can only imagine the Twitter frenzy from the 'squad' had Kate worn a zebra print dress to an African country. Not to mention that it's something you might wear for a summer party in California, not a day time event in a conservative country. Inappropriate on so many levels.

AnnieSF · 11/05/2024 15:34

I thought it was about embracing her roots? She dressed up Maltese style so why not in Nigerian style? Such a missed opportunity.

IcedPurple · 11/05/2024 15:37

I'm still getting over the poster who claimed that Catherine had deliberately chosen to channel a 'white slave mistress' just by wearing a red dress in Jamaica. The reference, apparently, was Scarlett O'Hara.

There was no 'red dress'. The poster did a big flounce, citing 'whitesplaining', when pressed for photos. No doubt they will return soon in yet another incarnation. I'd know her from outer space!

There were several things worthy of criticism about that Caribbean tour, but Kate's choice of outfits was not among them. I can't say the same about Meghan on this 'tour'.

AnnieSF · 11/05/2024 15:39

Oops there's one of those pesky wire fences getting in the way of a good photo!

Her feet look like toothsome grins.

She has bad feet due to wearing so many high heels they say. I'm wondering whether she has had toe surgery.

It makes her look like an outsider rather than marking her out as special- the only one who didn’t understand the assignment and therefore sticks out like a sore thumb. It does smack of cultural misunderstanding.

To be fair to her, she had be allowed to cover up quite a multitude of ignorant faux pas under the flimsy excuse of ‘cultural differences’.

For a grown woman in her 40s there is no excuse for going into a professional situation so poor informed and expect everyone just to brush it under the carpet.

I agree, it just seems crazy to be in her position and not to employ someone to support you appropriate outfit choices that are appropriate for the country you’re visiting (or at least I’m assuming she’s not!)

There are two dresses Greta Scacchi’s character wears in White Mischief that are eerily similar to the style of yesterday’s backless puce dress and the white strapless one. And Harry’s white suit just needs a pith helmet for full effect. I also don’t like animal print in this context, it feels clumsy and pointed. Sorry to say this again, but there is so much beautiful fabric and wonderful designers coming out of Nigeria. Wouldn’t it have been a dream if Meghan had shown off the styles and talent of where she is now calling “home”?

MummyJ12 · 11/05/2024 15:49

The white column dress is by St Agni. The same designer as the black backless dress that she wore for the Polo dinner. She is definitely on some kind of deal with these designers to merch. Although as I have previously posted, the last St Agni dress that she wore is still available to buy online, so it really isn’t the case that anything she wears sells out in seconds. (As it once would when she had more popularity).
However, I believe the white column dress is another past season like the blush one, so it will be interesting to see if it is suddenly available again online at a hiked price like the Heidi Merrick blush…..

Thedom · 11/05/2024 15:50

I too thought the white dress was an evening event. Strange choice for a lunch.

I was thinking the exact same thing!

Cos plenty of peolke woukd comment how she is appropriating the culture if she did, I mean there are plenty of nasty comments about her saying she has a certain % Nigerian in her ancestry. It doesn't matter what she does if she did it, people would bitch about it, if she doesn't they still bitch about it.

You know what, @Serenster - that's genuinely very interesting and very positive. How good would it have been if that had been effectively promoted, rather than H&M themselves, and her outfits?

It is good but also one of the best private schools in the city where the wealthiest kids go, so it seems an odd choice of school to donate to.

At least I had the decency to hide most of the toes.

No no no.

Yes, and the fence was a football pitch I believe when William and Kate werw criticized for a similar photo. But it was William and Kate so all we heard was they were racist and even if not they should have known the optics would be bad.

Were you around here then?

MummyJ12 · 11/05/2024 15:56

The Sussex Squad are now bullying and hounding Donu Kogbara for speaking out against them and their visit. Yet Harry is out there waxing lyrically about mental health and it’s ok not to be ok. I just can’t bear the hypocrisy of it!

Much like the fences in Jamaica the SS whipped up such outrage about were the perimeter fences of the football field the Cambridges were visiting.

Looking at the images there looks to be at least one PA traveling with them and of course there’s this thing called the internet which can come in handy, failing that discretely ask one of the locals..

Even when I was working in a low level job and travelled overseas as employees we often got some clothing advice for sensitive destinations, even if we rarely if ever were going to do anything close to being formal.

TBH I’m finding it tough to believe the possibly iffy choice of clothing is simply down to a lack of understanding of cultural differences.

The Invictus website is carrying images of Harry at the London events midweek. There’s nothing so far about Nigeria.

https://www.invictusgamesfoundation.org/news

Perhaps the Invictus people who actuaally do the organising aren't too keen to see it held in Nigeria - and who could blame them?

The thing is, she's not really in any sort of 'position'.

She was briefly a working royal, with the royal machinery to support her in such situations. Her tours would have been planned and coordinated at the highest level. But now, in between sending out jam jars with wonky labels to C listers, she's playing pretend royal. She has none of the support staff necessary for such ventures, especially in a sensitive and complex country like Nigeria. Hence the mess we are now watching unfold.

I have no idea about whether the Cambridges were on a football pitch.

But I do know this was the volleyball court the Sussexes were exiting, so I thought I would clarify.

Oh, I saw one of her videos this morning! She's certainly no royalist, so her criticism is not partisan on her part.

The SS who engage in this sort of behaviour are just utterly stupid and a bit evil, in my opinion. Who on earth do they think they are, going after a Nigerian woman commenting on something happening in her own country?

Well Harry's worn his Invictus logo T-shirt today, so if they don't publish a picture of that on the Invuctus website, then that will be an interesting development.
