Can this be true? That Harry and Meghan are off on a “royal” trip to Nigeria? What’s the game now? My head is spinning!

If they are kidnapped I'm sure their Netflix crew will capture it on film.

😂It'll be the King's fault.
Or the UK taxpayers.
Or William and Kate.

ShamedBySiri · 01/05/2024 07:59

It'll be down to UK taxpayers to buy them out or send in an SAS rescue party @IsoldeWagner

Ohpleeeease · 01/05/2024 08:17

Hopefully the trustees of Invictus have done a full risk assessment and checked their insurance before authorising this jaunt. If Harry comes to grief because they sent him into a dangerous environment to represent the charity it will be on them.

Well I’m glad that Harry and Meghan feel able to trust someone to do a risk assessment and keep them safe in a relatively dangerous place. He doesn’t seem to think that anyone in the UK is able to do that. He can’t possibly bring his family here to visit a heavily guarded Royal residence, in a country that doesn’t have a major security problem, in order to see his father, because it’s too dangerous 🙄

It won't be the kidnappers' faults though. That would be racist.

I really don't think this is any kind of 'official' Invictus trip. I think it's basically a jolly for Harry, Meghan and whatever representative of the corrupt Nigerian military invited them.

Invictus is just an excuse. We know and they know there's pretty much no chance of Nigeria hosting the games.

Agreed. Which can’t be good for Invictus as it is definitely becoming the Harry and Meghan show

I don’t think it is either. My point was that as a mere patron/founder it isn’t Harry’s decision to make. Representing Invictus would require the trustees to be ok with it, which if they’re worth their salt they wouldn’t.

Honestly, with everything that's happened in recent years with dodgy corporate sponsors and inviting militaries with terrible human rights records to the 'Invictus family', at this point they deserve the Harry and Meghan Show.

I found watching Michael Palin in Nigeria very unsettling. He struggled to relax and there were no little humorous exchanges that usually make his programmes so special. He looked his age (and has every right to) and seemed uncomfortable most of the trip - you could see he felt the danger and looked quite upset when mention was made of Britain's 60 years of colonial rule. I'm not sure either H or M have the intelligence or gravitas to deal with Nigeria unless, of course, it will be a heavily-curated visit from limo to palace door with no outside agencies disturbing the peace?

Yes, @Lifestooshort71, Michael Palin's discomfort and fear was palpable in last night's episode, particularly when the convoy became gridlocked in freight truck traffic on the main road and they have to take a diversion to get to Benin City. Michael Palin admitted to be 'slightly hysterical' so what would H&M be like? (My guess is that H&M will mostly be wrapped in cotton wool in a Lagos Airport Hilton Hotel-type environment, with occasional 'photo ops'.)

And the oil pollution ... it's horrific what the multi-nationals have done to Nigeria, including an oil corporation that does business with one of the Invictus 'Sponsors' (see posts above).

Read this and weep:

'There is a symbiotic relationship between the military dictatorship and the multinational companies who grease the palms of those who rule…. They are assassins in foreign lands. They drill and they kill in Nigeria'.

Nigeria and Oil

This part of the globalissues.org web site introduces some of the problems in Nigeria due to oil

Agreed, they really are the Duke and Duchesses of Windsor part 2.

I'm assuming that's on BBC? I must watch that on catch up. I've been fascinated by Nigeria since studying Nigerian politics at university.

Michael Palin admitted to be 'slightly hysterical' so what would H&M be like? (My guess is that H&M will mostly be wrapped in cotton wool in a Lagos Airport Hilton Hotel-type environment, with occasional 'photo ops'.

I see the Hilton, Lagos Airport, is handy for ”the airport’s private jet terminal and has an exclusive immigrations and customs desk in the hotel for private jet passengers” so that might tick a few boxes for H&M and also apparently offers “ views of the airfield from De Bull restaurant and bar”………..but other than that…

The road from the airport to Lagos itself can be “interesting”, TBH based on my visits to both I reckon Abuja always seemed slightly more benign..

I still reckon bizjet into somewhere like Kaduna might be on the cards, be interesting to see what transpires.

AutumnCrow · 01/05/2024 15:39

H&M are such 'useful idiots' doing this, given people are already associating this trip with (a) their 'royal' status and (b) Nigeria's recent membership of Invictus.

They will certainly be used for photo-ops with lots and lots of children and 'ordinary people'.

This has all the hallmarks of exploitative 'astroturfing', the term for a top-down mega-project's social manipulations masquerading as organic, grassroots demonstrations of gratitude for the 'philanthropy'.

I'm starting to wonder if Invictus is backed by individual billionaires and to also wonder about the real relevance of its significant corporate funding and endorsement. What is the real relationship of Invictus and its sponsors/partners with the senior military hierarchies of developing countries?

The oil markets in Nigeria are worth $$$billions.

Colombia too is rich in natural resources and has experienced something of an economic boom in recent years. Again, there are potential markets there worth $$$billions, that would fuck over the indigenous farmers and workers.
