Just posting this from the Spectator.

"Coin operated B-list celebrity"! 😂

"Their penchant for creating distraction, chaos and controversy wherever they go is intolerable. Nor does America need yet another coin-operated B-list celebrity wading into politics."

www.spectator.co.uk/article/dear-britain-please-take-prince-harry-back/

Dear god…… 🫣. Surely it can’t get much worse!

BemusedAmerican · 24/04/2024 15:38

They could try sending Melania Trump some jam...

LipstickLil · 24/04/2024 15:45

After Harry’s 2021 assault on the US Constitution’s commitment to free speech, he tweeted: ‘For Prince Harry to condemn the USA’ First Amendment shows he has lost the plot. Soon he will not be wanted on either side of the pond.’ And here we are.

😆😆😆

He was used to the Royal rota. The idea that anyone could write about him without palace permission was new to him. I think the problem is that he isn't very bright.

There is a persistent misunderstanding about the royal rota, and it's a myth that won't go away

It is simply a press pool arrangement, used to cover royal engagements when either the venue is to small to host a press pack, or when it's something that might not attract much press (ie not full teams from everyone) but is still worth covering.

Usually a print journalist, a video camera operator and a still photographer, the larger media organisations share out the staffing and take it in turns.

Royal Rota - Wikipedia

They don't get privileged access or special briefings.

Nor do staff contributors to, or recipients of pooled material from the royal rota press pool have to use in in accordance with any particular editorial stance

BemusedAmerican · 24/04/2024 14:28

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator He isn't applying for citizenship. That is different from staying with a visa. Also the judge hasn't made a ruling yet. If the judge rules against Harry's visa then Biden will show that he is going against the US Court. People in the US don't like Harry. They will like him less if he gets open preferential treatment.

Cheers. However, I am now seriously confused and worried. The news article stated the sleepy Joe was supporting Mr Harry's citizenship. I took that as seriously good news IE he won't be coming back to England as he has no armed protection and he is not comfortable in England as he likes his privacy.

Thank you

😂😂😂

JSMill · 24/04/2024 20:34

@EdithWeston it is annoying how the royal rota has become widely misunderstood. I blame the Netflix series for that.

AutumnCrow · 24/04/2024 20:41

Maybe the best way to think of the 'royal rota' is like a car share or a car pool where the participants take turns driving. The royal rota participants rotate whose turn it is to rock up with a camera to the latest event-with-all-the-tedious-waiting-featuring-a-royal and then they all share the resulting photos. Saves all the participants a lot of time and effort in the long run.

Is that right? That's my take on it anyway.

TheBraves · 24/04/2024 21:05

People in the US don't like Harry.

IME, lots of Americans like Harry and Meghan, more are neutral about them. I don’t see much dislike.

BemusedAmerican · 24/04/2024 21:17

@TheBraves which is why Americans are happily donating to the Trussell Trust with derisive comments, not inviting them to events, etc. Actual immigrants who had to legitimately go through the process to become US citizens are not happy, either.

AutumnCrow · 24/04/2024 21:20

No-one even knows what sort of visa Harry has been there on for 3 years.

America is a big place, to say people in the US don’t like Harry is a silly sweeping statement. Lots will, lots won’t, most wont care either way about him.

Vespanest · 24/04/2024 21:43

If Harry and Meghan were certain of the popularity in the states they wouldn’t need to keep announcing their next step, they wouldn’t need to test run a commercial venture months before it’s ready and they certainly wouldn’t need to keep reinventing themselves. The reality is they are still unsure, it’s why they make sure they are in control of their public appearances and interviews. I’m hopeful they’ll make it but it’s seem pretty clear it’s baby steps, I honestly do not see anything that Harry has to offer that the states haven’t got better other than invictus and gossip

We have worse, imo, people doing well for themselves and I can’t imagine why those people are so popular, but they are. Something for everyone I guess and with the right marketing, anything sells. Add the royal connection which some people here can’t resist.

Vespanest · 24/04/2024 22:41

The disadvantage Harry has is that he comes with a couple of million outgoings a year that is only going to get larger. Many celebrities can live comfortably with the assets they have, but they employ so many staff, expensive PR and want to be philanthropist . Doing quite well isn’t really an option, the top three exec at Archewell in 2023 didn’t see much change of 1/2 million dollars a year, add on a couple of million in security. They need to accumulate in the hundreds of millions to generate the wealth to match their lifestyle long term, plus royals get pretty boring when the next generation come of age.

Corinthiana · 26/04/2024 05:44

The trouble is that they're trying desperately to live a royal lifestyle.
That needs a huge back up machine. He's lived it, she's tasted it. They're trying to be senior royals but not in the royal family and in a country that is a republic. It's just very odd.

AutumnCrow · 26/04/2024 06:20

I think they have become a curiosity.

Always makes me smile when I see their grandiosity in having a ‘global press secretary’. They love the word global. Global influence, global reach, global healing, global digital space, you name it, they’re owning its authenticity and taking it global.

Corinthiana · 26/04/2024 07:10

You're right, @AutumnCrow .
They're "global" nothing. They're very rich and have titles.... but what else?

He is giving out medals in the US, virtually, standing at his or someone's else's back door. Wearing a suit and his own medals.

He really looks like he is living in the past, and looking more like the ultimate twat.

I imagine this is Harry's fate now - he's available for hire to dish out awards. It won't make him a living but it is keeping him in the public eye which is essential for him and Meghan to thrash out other money making deals. There seems to be a great deal of these private organisations in the USA who give out awards so he could be kept busy. Personally I find it a bit like a Pretend Prince. He turns out for these private deals in all his finery with medals from the Institution he hates. I wonder what goes through his mind as he pins on the ones especially relevant to his Grandmother. Do the medals signify his worth? Is it his L'Oréal moment " I'm worth it"? It is all a bit sad really.

ArcaneWireless · 26/04/2024 08:54

By wearing his medals, it looks like he was making it all about his service and not her service, her recovery and her achievements.

There was no need.

Nono22972 · 26/04/2024 09:42

That was very weird. Harry has nothing to do with the US military, I don't understand why they chose him to present that award.

I do believe that H&M want to be these celebrity royals. They need to stay relevant because they desperately need money. Not saying that they're broke or anything but the lifestyle they are living seem to be very expensive. Their security cost alone is allegedly $1 million per year. Add to that, their entire staff, their PR agents, Archewell, they could easily be spending close to 3-5 million a year so they definitely need to generate a lot of money to maintain their lifestyle

Corinthiana · 26/04/2024 17:01

Pretend Prince, very true. I've absolutely no idea why he was "presenting" the award. He just seems a bit desperate. Maybe it's his agent that gets him this stuff, but it's getting embarrassing.

MrsFinkelstein · 27/04/2024 09:28

Thanks @EdithWeston , @JSMill and @AutumnCrow for explaining the Royal Rota.

It is unfortunate how their role has been so negatively twisted to suit H&Ms narrative.

Royal Reporters may be part of the "Royal Rota", but the Rota itself doesn't make up stories, as you said, it's just a "share" system so events get full coverage with minimum media present.
