Is there any other interpretation of that? And why?!

I was expecting a page or two of accidental arm slippage excuses.

Glad I'm not the betting type...

@YaMuvva
"I really do think she thought it would be just like Hollywood with glamorous photo OPs and fakery. The fact she was shocked that the Queen’s family bowed to her in private really shows that she had a very different view of what the RF are than what was actually real."
Anyone with half a brain cell would have known that the late Queen, then in her 90s, would eventually die, and some things would inevitably change. In fact some of the things already have.
For example, Meghan was criticised for not wearing a hat on an engagement with the Queen, when she had apparantly been explicitly told that the Queen was wearing one (and that was apparantly code for Meghan to wear one as well, which she may not have understood, but the subsequent criticism she would have, surely).
So, now I have noticed that on many engagements now, Catherine (and other female RF members) may wear a sort of trouser suit, doesn't wear hats as often, except for church or other state occassions, etc.
These are little things, I know, but it is symptomatic of other changes.
The late Queen was a product of her generation; she always wore gloves. Now when I was growing up, my DF used to tell me that a 'lady' always wore gloves.
This is something we fail to understand these days.
Obviously I have no idea whether the RF bow/curtsey to the King when in private. I guess this would depend on the person themselves (Charles)?

Wearing gloves is sensible if you're going to be shaking a lot of sweaty hands.

It's a bit old-fashioned unfortunately.

I love gloves, particularly leather, makes an outfit look more polished I think.

Do you wear them? I never do, unless it's particularly cold in winter.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 15/04/2024 23:32

Yes I do, I have a few pairs of leather gloves in various colours which I wear in winter all the time, I think they finish an outfit off, plus my hands are always cold!

I've literally got one pair of leather gloves, and I haven't worn them in years!

Are there any black polo players ? I know it is traditionally a very white, very rich, sport, but they must be able to find a black polo player who would absolutely love the opportunity to participate.

I believe that in Michael Palin's forthcoming Channel 5 documenting on Nigeria, he looks at polo in the country. 'He meets Harrow educated Polo Player Folarin Kuku' [preview blurb].

Folarin Kuku has a fascinating CV, including as a ground-breaking British army officer, with an interesting background. (I've linked one early article, but there are more recent ones worth searching for.)

Michael Palin has previously been to the Shandur Pass and talked/filmed about 'the birthplace of polo'. Palin makes good documentaries and I expect that he will delve into the elite side of the sport and the 'different worlds' paradoxes involved. I cannot see what Harry could add to the genre of any use or coherence.

Guards' first black officer 'just wants to do his job'

BasiliskStare · 16/04/2024 02:06

@AutumnCrow - Oh my - I would watch a Michael Palin documentary about polo any day of the week over a Netflix thing with by Harry having to come up with an idea.

MaturingCheeseball · 16/04/2024 07:09

Oh no, Harry as the new Michael Palin Sad

Otoh he could trek off to the middle of Africa (yah) with Netflix, and then we could see how long it would take him to find his way back on his own…..

That elbow of Meghan’s! She really is the limit. I saw her face change from scowl to big smile when “moving” the Sentebale lady. Just the same face she did when her assistant (now eliminated) tried to move her along the red carpet.

IsoldeWagner · 16/04/2024 07:17

That's because Michael Palin makes it about the people and the country, not about himself.
Harry puts himself (and his wife) front and centre.

Not that I know of, I was agreeing!

OneHeartySnail · 16/04/2024 07:44

It is sad that there has been so much snarkiness on this sort of thread that everything has to be questioned. Hopefully there will be less going forward

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 16/04/2024 07:48

@BasiliskStare you’ve really hit the nail on the head. Good documentary is about the subject, not the presenter. H&M seem to make themselves the subject in every situation and come across as decidedly humourless!

That's really up to H&M and their choices.

OneHeartySnail · 16/04/2024 08:04

The snarkiness is largely down to the way their supporters post (have posted), not what H&M do, tbf!

It's a bit old-fashioned unfortunately.

What's unfortunate about 'old-fashioned'? The late Queen had to shake lots of hands, in summer as well as winter. Some might have been carrying diseases. Who knows?
Memo to self - next time I see a member of the RF meeting crowds of people, notice if they are wearing gloves. I think Charles doesn't. Did Meghan?
The newspapers enjoyed pitting TLQ against Diana for a while, because D had shaken hands with an AIDS sufferer. It was a good gesture at the time, to demonstrate that she couldn't catch AIDS by a hand-shake. Did she shake hands with other people that day? Did she need to use the facilities soon after, and wash her hands while she was there?
Nowadays, do all Royal vehicles have a big packet of anti-bacterial wipes in the side pockets?

MaturingCheeseball · 16/04/2024 08:37

I remember seeing Barack Obama lathering himself in anti-bacterial after shaking hands with people. Believe me, I’d be wearing rubber gloves!

At the end of one series of 24 “Mr President” shook hands with a woman who had put a deadly virus on her hand. Rather disappointingly they decided to abandon this storyline and in the next series there was a new “Mr President” for Jack Bauer to protect.

What's unfortunate about 'old-fashioned'?

I wondered that.
Seemed an odd choice of words.
Jeans, for example, are very "old-fashioned" if you think about it but are still practical and appropriate, albeit their styles change.

Presumably it's another very unsubtle part of the "only old, decrepit people don't like what H&M are doing and all their supporters are young and vibrant" trope.

Totally agree. This is what makes her a fascinating character. Her sense of entitlement and shamelessness. I think she was Daddy's princess and that has never left her. Pity she ditched the man who believed in her and paid for her education.
Show quote history
I find her absolutely fascinating. She is a study in pure narcissism. It’s nauseating but also completely compelling .

Agree with both these points.

Thanks, Thatstheway - you've crystallised something for me! "Why do you care?" is an oft-heard jibe from Meghan fans when she is criticised on MN.

Well, for me it's because she is utterly fascinating for the reason you give. She is a textbook manifestation of narcissism - you can literally tick off the characteristics one by one. To come across such a blatant example of a theoretical personality type must be rare. I judge her on what I see her doing and hear from her own lips in addition to well-attested accounts of her behaviour - which neither she nor Harry have dared to challenge - not just on any old repeated gossip.

So, yes - I'm both irritated on a trivial level by her behaviour and hypocrisy but also resentful on a more serious level because of the pain and trouble she has caused both her own and H's family (esp the Queen and PP in their last years/months), and the damage she and H tried to do to the UK in the eyes of the world.

On a more trivial level it's fun to observe her in the way we all get enjoyment from watching an over-the-top villain in a drama. So yes - I AM fascinated by her and it's not because I like her. Her brazeness is jaw-dropping - the self-doubt and conscience which inhibits most of us just doesn't seem to apply to M!

Yes you don’t get the impression that MP
is an egotistical person. He shows genuine interest in and empathy for the people he meets. He comes across as a throughly nice man. An old fashioned gentleman.

I meant it's unfortunate that it's regarded as old fashioned!

I'd hate to have to shake that many sweaty paws! Sometimes when I have to shake hands, it's all I can do to stop myself running for the nearest bathroom!
