The royal family

I’m not offended by it, frankly couldn’t care less about either side but I just find it quite bizarre and a bit concerning that this OP seemingly has nothing better to do with her days than start constant threads on the royals. It’s obsessive territory

This! Absolutely this!

People spend money on all kinds of nonsense. I mean, someone is presumably buying the D-day commemorative coins with an extremely jowly Charles on one side.

Jowly? Maybe you'll have a neat jawline when you're 75.

Julie Montagu has some interesting tours of stately homes and scottish castles on her American Viscountess youtube channel, fingers crossed for Balmoral.

Yes, I've seen a few. She's good and very informative.

Jowly and 75 goes together like meat and two veg, (especially if you're a bloke).

I know! Maybe he could have a neck lift, botox, a nose job and take ozempic!

Eh? Sounds unlikely. The Queen Mother would have no need or desire to drink out of a vase, I'm sure. Plenty of glassware.

We don’t pour wine out of glasses at 11am. We hide it in decorative containers around the house to be poured into our tea cups by the staff.

I get the butler to conceal my Tennants Extra in the silver gravy boat.

I’m on the mead.

Shampoo bottle in the shower.

Or get a hollowed out walking stick and fill in with rum.
You'll forget about any jowl problems.

I've ordered the knob handled one.
Only because it sounds rude.

I saw that and the price and thought 'greedy fuckers'.

Quality and durability. £150 is a bargain.
Although the above suggestions are cheaper.

A vase like container could be a decanter! People don't use them nowadays but my parents had loads of decorative decanters!

Yes, I would imagine she'd have those cut glass decanters. I doubt very much that she'd neck the Dubonnet down straight without putting it into a glass first, but who knows.

Probably a carafe, though they look a bit like urine sample bottles so best to stick to claret.

I have loads. But no need to hide my vices so they are sitting in convenient places around the house.

Depending on what the afternoon tea is like, it could actually be good value. You’ll pay between £75 - £110 for just an afternoon tea at one of the popular London hotels (the Ritz, the Dorchester etc)

tinytemper66 · 04/04/2024 15:23

Charging for access and selling afternoon teas now. How crass

What, like the NT and English Heritage and pretty much any stately home that's open to the public, you mean?

Yes, that's exactly my point.

Apart from the fact that opening (one of your many) homes to the public for a fee is a bit vulgar, this commercialisation puts the royal family on a par with businesses offering the stereotypical quaint British tea experience.

As a republican I thought one of the points of the monarchy was to be above such things. But I am happy to accept that I just don't get the whole monarchy thing.

OohFawnyFawnyFawny · 04/04/2024 15:55

A lot of the castles/stately homes up here open their doors for a look round. Some have teas. Some don’t.

I'm all for it if it helps pay for upkeep, keeps interest in local history or stops them being lost for future generations.

It saddens me to see ruins.

Expensive to run those castles...unless everyone in the country chips in a few quid to pay for them, or you have the skill/ruthlessness to earn enough to pay for them yourself.

Balmoral is privately owned . It is self sufficient.

Privately owned, but not self sufficient.

Government data shows Balmoral has received more than £1m in subsidies over the last 20 years, chiefly to sustain the estate’s extensive forests and woodland projects, which have received £598,000 since 2001. Balmoral was recently awarded £250,000 for peatland restoration.

Heaven forbid the royal family put their hand in their own heavily-lined pockets. That's what muggins the tax payer is for.
