They could do an immersive experience, where you put on an apron and get on with making the tea yourself. Then a bit of floor scrubbing and some genuflexions.

😂😂

Bing123 · 03/04/2024 22:32

Julie Montagu has some interesting tours of stately homes and scottish castles on her American Viscountess youtube channel, fingers crossed for Balmoral.

Oh Christ! Not more toe curling, nausea inducing, fawning sycophancy

I am beginning to think that this OP literally has nothing better to do but post on MN and fawn over the royals. I’ve lost count of the amount of threads they’ve started on this topic and I don’t even pay attention to it!

Oh well in that case maybe the OP would like to join me in appreciating MM for her efforts last week in reading stories to sick children in hospital.

I'll wait till they put it on Zoopla to pay their inheritance tax. 😁

MissTrip82 · 03/04/2024 23:26

I’m a republican and I’d enjoy this. As I enjoy visiting historical sites all over the world. Not indicative of support for the current royal family, just an interest in history.

WinnieTheW0rm · 04/04/2024 10:05

Is this a kind of pilot scheme?

I was wondering whether, if it goes well, there will be further programmes of opening (balmoral and elsewhere)

Seedpods · 04/04/2024 10:13

Mylovelygreendress · 03/04/2024 19:59

They are £100/150 per ticket which is a lot of money . Also , Balmoral is not the easiest place to reach so I think it’s impressive that so many people have bought the tickets given that we are constantly being told on MN that the RF are irrelevant and unpopular..

People spend money on all kinds of nonsense. I mean, someone is presumably buying the D-day commemorative coins with an extremely jowly Charles on one side.

You are right about the collectios but not Balmoral
People are interested to see old places, heritage, etc all the way around the world,

150 is steep but limited tickets as they are could have easily sold out for double the amount as many people like some of the RF

Despite many people saying that the RF is no longer popular , the tickets sold out on the first day !

🤣 Theres only 40 tickets per day available.

Also, people visiting may not be fans of the RF, they may just have an interest in history.

Yes, that's why I was wondering if it was a pilot. See who turns up, what they like/dislike about the visit and tweak, work out best flow through the rooms that are open and see what can be added/changed, assess future capacity etc.

Maybe, but tickets selling is not any sort of indication of the RFs popularity.

Overtheatlantic · 04/04/2024 10:47

I imagine many Americans have bought tickets for this. It would be considered a quintessentially British outing, with the tea and the castle. Lots of happy Yanks!

Well, if we were talking about Holyrood or somewhere, I’d agree, but Balmoral is a mid-19thc fairly undistinguished Scottish Baronial building, so not much history in comparison with others in Scotland other than the royal one.

Charging for access and selling afternoon teas now. How crass.

They've charged for access and for knighthoods, etc for years, but doubtless we'll be told once again that it's all going to Charles's charities - something which we'll probably never know since Balmoral is privately owned

Well....it's either royal fawning here or Meghan fawning on another thread - take your pick! It's tribal and most of us fall into one category or the other, and never the twain shall meet in terms of agreeing on anything much.

My only beef is that when it's people being interested in/admiring the royals it's always fawning, yet the fan-girl stuff on Meghan is at least equally nausea-inducing.

You can either be offended by it or (like me) just see it as a fun part of life which takes us out of the daily grind as we contemplate beautiful clothes, luxury homes, and ceremonial occasions etc etc. Lighten up is my advice!

I’m not offended by it, frankly couldn’t care less about either side but I just find it quite bizarre and a bit concerning that this OP seemingly has nothing better to do with her days than start constant threads on the royals. It’s obsessive territory

What, like the NT and English Heritage and pretty much any stately home that's open to the public, you mean?

I read an article once about the then queen's mother, IIRC her maids would have a vase? container type of thing with wine which she'd drink half for elevenses then polish off the rest by late afternoon, followed by a nap till dinner time. I can see how something like this would be sold out - I think the RF are struggling to adapt to maintain relevance especially if part of doing so means conceding some privacy. I suppose this is one way to keep the pitchforks at bay.

Eh? Sounds unlikely. The Queen Mother would have no need or desire to drink out of a vase, I'm sure. Plenty of glassware.
