Constitutional chaos.

Kate is ill (reasons plural - physical and mental etc) but what if that isn’t the main story.

What if the rumours are true and Rose Chum’s third child is William’s? Born 2016, she’s older than Louis.

Massive constitutional headache. Does Daughter Chum enter the line of succession ahead of Louis? Illegitimate but maybe people would demand William treat her as an equal child. Maybe this is what Rishi Sunak has been grappling with.

There would be huge public/social splits on the issue. Church of England issues filling the papers, endless ‘Well, what is the point of marriage’ op-eds from lawyers, and so on. Plus KC3 with health looking shaky….

And what about Kate? Stay or go?

Big ole mess.

OP posts:

Why do posters keep implying the OP dors not know the law?

Because almost all her posts demonstrate ignorance of how it works?

Indeed. Maybe a reality show competition?

Yes
Yes
Yes

With some sort of " The Tower " situation ( for the unsuccessful )

My DS, for years maintained that reality TV contestants, when they are sent home are secretly killed and replaced by robots. I thought he was joking, but maybe he was secretly planning this exact scenario. He has a strange extensive knowledge of all the English Monarchs and can recite them in order. Hmmm

I can do that. I used to be able to give their dates, as well. I'd probably have to think about that now, esp when I get to the early order ones like Edward I.

Is that from Horrible Histories? There's a great song from there!

AutumnCrow · 16/03/2024 15:04

How come I got deleted for making a factual observation in a light-hearted way? I simply find it interesting that under the English Legal Services Act 2007, 'lawyer' is not a protected title. (In other jurisdictions, like the United States, there are strict restrictions on who may call themselves a lawyer, with paralegals and patent agents generally disallowed.)

I think it's really fascinating. It actually means the OP is perfectly entitled to call herself or himself a lawyer, not the opposite of that ffs.

This board gets nuttier by the day.

Yes! I couldn't hear 'Charles iii' for about 3 months without having 'My name is, my name is... Charles ii' as an earworm either, we watched so much HH!

We always call him in when there's a question on Pointless!

CarolinaInTheMorning · 16/03/2024 15:14

The Tower would be a nice touch, although I would draw the line at anything involving a scaffold.

I'm also trying to think what might be some good challenges for the competition. Ribbon cutting? A fashion show wearing the uniforms of various regiments (women included)? Getting though a red box in record time? Choosing a regnal name? (the audience could vote).

Stonyoopsoops · 16/03/2024 15:15

Rumours are hoot aren’t they? 🤔

But only some are being touted.

If it is ok to discuss children out of wedlock affecting the constitution, what about rumours regarding an age old profession?

Perhaps some of those with expert friends and journalist links might like to enlighten us on those?

Iwasafool · 16/03/2024 15:19

TheSuggestedAmendment · 16/03/2024 09:37

But that was then.

This is 2024. To have a ‘lesser’ child would be to say children born out of wedlock (ie plenty of the British public) count for less.

You do realise that this is a real child you are discussing?

Some rumours are taboo apparently!

Indeed. One might reasonably ask why MNHQ is now allowing threads on an identifiable child supposedly being illegitimate, and how far is this terribly modern new lee-way extending?

HotChocolateNotCocoa · 16/03/2024 15:25

DwightDFlysenhower · 16/03/2024 14:26

They did, yes.

Just think, Henry VIII wouldn't have had to get through all those wives if Henry FitzRoy could have just become king.

Although he rather inconveniently died at 17.

loobylou10 · 16/03/2024 15:29

@TheSuggestedAmendment oh my oh my - I'm actually embarrassed for you.

Stonyoopsoops · 16/03/2024 15:31

Lovely isn’t it Autumncrow?

Not content with casting aspersions about two families and the ripple effect of that, some are happy to spread their bile about an innocent child.

Must be just peachy being that person.

The one who protects those who maybe should not be protected by throwing shade at a kid.

Lovely stuff.

Absolutely bizarre that so many posters seem keen to convince me I am not a lawyer.

Well I can’t speak for anyone else, but for me, what makes this seem unlikely is that you’re ignoring the genuinely important legal considerations in favour of tabloidy “OMG constitutional CRISIS!!” hyperbole.

Even though you actually quoted a post that points out that the Perth Agreement did not retroactively abolish male primogeniture, you haven’t acknowledged this at all - even though, as the most recent major change in the laws governing the line of succession, it is highly likely to set a precedent for any future changes. This means that any existing illegitimate children of a monarch or heir would not be affected by any future revision to the line of succession.

In purely practical terms, it would be impossible to apply such a change retroactively. It would mean the descendants of any illegitimate child of any sovereign from George I onwards could make a claim to the British throne, as long as that child was older than the legitimate one who did succeed to the throne (or who fathered a monarch). So never mind the DNA test - if, in the unlikely case that Rose Hanbury’s daughter is Prince William’s child, she has zero chance of a place in the line.

I think they could easily do a LARP version of the Battle of Bosworth or something. They don't have to actually kill them, but the winner actually gets to be King/Queen. It would be brilliant- horses, chainmail, flags, a bit of swordfighting...

Re games, what about 'make 3 minutes of inane conversation with this actor' or 'Remember the curtseying order of these 10 people in each of these 3 situations'.

I'm slightly baffled by the assumption that people are having an illicit affair and not using contraception. You'd think it was the first thing they'd make sure was watertight, so to speak.

Well exactly. Apparently Charles shagged someone else while Camilla was trying for a baby with her husband and while she was pregnant!

Not really. I’m a lawyer and constitutional law is an interest.

At least I’m not pruriently discussing what illness Kate may have. Lots of those threads.

Only legitimate issue are in the line of succession.

You should know that, since you're a lawyer with an interest in constitutional law and all that...

You should also know that public discussion of the paternity of a child is a shameful thing to do. The child in question is eight.

I really don't understand MNHQ's moderation policy around this thread in particular and many, many others right now.
