The royal family

If you were William, how would you handle the Diana Legacy Awards from now on?

Would you distance yourself from it, on the grounds that it provides an opportunity for your estranged brother to take a poke at you?

Carry on, grey rocking the antics from Montecito?

Something else I can't think of?

(And before anyone rocks up to tell me to get a life, find something to do, take up a hobby - I'm having a quiet day today where I'll do what I fancy, so go take your own advice.)

I thought it out of order for William not to stay around until Harry had done his message. Maybe going forward, it should be decided that only one of them attend, although it’s clearly something they both want to continue supporting.

Hoglet70 · 15/03/2024 12:45

I'd stay at home and watch it on TV!

BenefitWaffle · 15/03/2024 12:50

I think William should start by not publicly trashing Diana.

HellonHeels · 15/03/2024 12:51

I'd attempt to reconcile with my brother and forge a healthy relationship.

Well, he's already doing that by default, no?

OP posts:
BenefitWaffle · 15/03/2024 13:12

@Prydddan he trashed her before when he said Diana was paranoid.
The Royal family always tried to paint Diana as crazy so they could say everything she said was a lie. Diana was very open about her mental health problems. mainly bulimia. But she also knew that Charles started cheating on her far earlier than he publicly admitted.
William did not need to say anything. But it really sticks in my craw that he hands out awards in her legacy after trashing her.

BenefitWaffle · 15/03/2024 13:14

And I agree that William should be professional in his behaviour towards his brother. They do not have to be friends, but William was unprofessional at the awards and it just makes him look petty.

Kimmeridge · 15/03/2024 13:14

Wow all these William bashing threads are certainly giving MM a well earned break

"It brings indescribable sadness to know that the BBC's failures contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia and isolation that I remember from those final years with her."

If she was 'paranoid' is it trashing her to say so? Especially when she been lead to believe she had good reason to fear for her safety? Since when was 'paranoid' a term of abuse, rather than a description of someone's state of mental health?

Yirk · 15/03/2024 13:20

Maybe Earl Spencer could do them instead !

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 15/03/2024 13:23

So randoms on MN think they know Diana better than her own teenage son (who by all accounts was also used by her as her confident).

LilyBartsHatShop · 15/03/2024 13:26

It's not actually destigmatising mental health issues to pretend they never involve unpleasant things like paranoia.

DisforDarkChocolate · 15/03/2024 13:27

Earl Spencer!! Feck hasn't he monetised his sisters death enough. Let him within a mile of the awards and have the ceremony at Althrop and charge admission.

Yirk · 15/03/2024 13:32

He hasn't monetised Diana any more than Harry is doing, she's a cash cow for them both !

BenefitWaffle · 15/03/2024 13:33

@LilyBartsHatShop I agree. But armchair diagnosing paranoia when paranoia is a mental health diagnosis ,and then using it to dismiss what someone has said is nasty.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 15/03/2024 13:38

Both William and Harry should finally grow up and behave as adults.

That's showing a united front when it comes to their mothers legacy.

And OP I'd suggest you find yourself a box set to watch - while indulging in MN!

BenefitWaffle · 15/03/2024 13:40

Arm chairing diagnosing someone as paranoid is a disgusting thing to do. It is like the arm chairing diagnosing of OCD. These are real mental health illnesses and have a diagnostic pathway and treatment. Someone who wrongly thinks something is going to happen to them, does not mean they meet the diagnostic criteria for paranoid.
And I think a teenage boy is very unlikely to have the expertise required to diagnose someone as paranoid.
The way William used the word is not as a mental health diagnosis, but as a trashing one. It means this woman was paranoid so ignore everything she said. That is what the Royal Family have been doing to Diana for decades.
I have no idea if William and Kate are happily married or will divorce. But if they do divorce William will I am sure try and paint Kate as crazy and paranoid. The difference is that Kate has a loving and supportive family.

BranchGold · 15/03/2024 13:48

Paranoia can be a clinical diagnosis, but it can also be a description for an acute state of mind/personality. I feel he’s in a position to accurately describe his recollection of his mother’s state of mind, more than you or I.

calling someone anxious doesn’t mean they have to have a diagnosis of anxiety etc.

BenefitWaffle · 15/03/2024 13:52

Paranoia is used as a clinical diagnosis or a way to disparage what someone is saying and thinking - usually a woman.
I will leave it there. But since OP asked the question about the Diana Legacy Awards anyone taking part should not publicly disparage Diana. It is hypocritical. Either take part and be respectful, or do not take part and be as disrespectful as you want.

TraitorsGate · 15/03/2024 13:55

What did he say. I didn't watch it but the BBC Bashir interview did lead to her mistrust and paranoia. Why would he need to hang around for Harry to make his speech from another country at a different time, did Harry watch William in real time? Why is there so much William hate about all of a sudden

Have a word with those arm chair diagnosing the Princess of Wales with ED and mental health issues will you?

BenefitWaffle · 15/03/2024 13:57

@smilesy There is lots of armchair theories about Kate at the moment, most of which are clearly ridiculous. I feel sorry for Kate. But I also think KP created this by releasing a faked photo.

mardylookingfrump · 15/03/2024 13:58

Diana was messy and loved drama; her sons are messy and create drama. They should carry on, perhaps throw punches one year?

No. The ED and mental health theories were around well before the photo was released
