Photography hobbyists and aficionados unite.

Welcome to the thread where you can display and discuss some of the most iconic photos captured by some of the most talented photographers.

These aren't your average Instagram photos. Oh no. These are the ones that live in your head rent free. The Marie Kondo of photos that spark joy. Where everything in the photo is perfection.

This thread is meant to be fun, light-hearted, and showcase the talents of those behind the lens.

Please do not derail, and do not use this thread to be snarky or have a dig about subjects you don't like, or to other posters. If you cannot keep in the spirit of the thread, then please don't participate or spoil it for others.

Love this thread as a amateur portrait photographer. Thanks for starting it up OP!

Paddington over for tea for the Jubilee.

The Queen had always wanted to meet him.

😁

Re the royal blue "hairdresser capes" photograph of TLQ, TQM and PM, I remember reading (a long time ago) that Hardy Amies wasn't happy with the various outfits suggested and couldn't get a composition he liked.
He'd brought along a length of satin as part of a selection of props and eventually ended up using that for all of them, pinning and folding it into place (he was a dress designer too).
Unfortunately, I can't find anything that corroborates that and, indeed, it's said that the satin "jackets" were by Dior.
It's possible that HA had had three loosely fitting jackets designed and taken them along on the off-chance and the "spontaneous folding and pinning" become a nice legend that grew from that.
I never liked the photo as the material reminded me of the "Silk Cut" adverts (if anyone else is old enough to remember them?) and I've an aversion (verging on a proper phobia) to smoking and anything to do with it.

As to the various techniques used to alter/enhance photos now and in the past, I read that Patrick Lichfield said the best way to get a soft focus background and, hence, enhance your subject was to smooth the cellophane from a packet of cigarettes over the lens, then burn a small hole in it with a lit cigarette end.

I remember that
story at the time @LaMarschallin and i think i saw or read it else where

Lovely thread by the way. For lots of reasons.

Republican myself, but this thread is a reminder that they are actually humans - with feelings ...

I agree that very few photos will ever reach icon status.

Unfortunately that would have made for a very short thread because we have not yet had the luxury of time to see if some of the more recent photos truly are iconic.

I would say that some definitely will make the cut.

Until then, I’m enjoying the photos that others have posted. There have been some crackers.

I agree iconic royal photos would have made a short thread, but that's the OP's title thread. I opened it and after 4 pages, lost interest. I expected something different.

Which doesn't mean posters can't enjoy the pictures. I simply was expecting something else from the OP title thread. All good Flowers

Three generations of Royal Women on horseback

If I remember correctly The Queen is riding Tinkerbell, Princess Anne is riding her son Peter Pan and Zara is riding her daughter Tigerlily, both homebreds.

I LOVE skewbald ponies and horses!

Definitely the best colour IMO.

That's comforting - I worry more and more about my memory these days Smile

Lady Helen Windsor

Ah! Wouldn't have got that one.
That little doll like face and the blonde hair and i thought Grace.

I think this is a cracking pic - I love Catherine’s expression, but not her outfit!

Oh - I love her outfit - especially her hat. It looks glamorous and cosy and as though she were Empress of All The Russias.

pipsfromthefuture · 06/03/2024 23:35

Can't believe this one hasn't been posted yet! It was talked about so much.

I remember wondering if it was real or a painting.

Very striking use of lighting.

StormzyinaTCup · 07/03/2024 09:31

Lovely thread.
So many beautiful photos and so many that I have not seen before.
Really interesting.

Roussette · 07/03/2024 09:35

I like this pic of Monaco royalty. Charlene is smiling and given she nearly got cold feet about marrying Prince Albert, it's good to see this pic
I think she is beautiful

Also this one of Elizabeth and Harry (taken by Tim Graham)

I have loved this thread. Particularly seeing this photo, because royal photographer Tim Graham was my landlord some years ago!

Very like Vivienne Leigh

Thank you!

I was trying to think which classic film star she reminded me of, and I just couldn't remember her name.

Vivienne Leigh - one of the most beautiful women ever born, I would think.

FMLWTF · 07/03/2024 09:37

Oops, pic doesn’t show but the one of Harry grinning at the Queen as she’s inspecting the troops.

And this one, which defined both the monarch and her sense of duty, as well as the horrible situation with the rules at the time.

This one always makes me sad as I just imagine if my mum had to sit alone at my dad's funeral.

Dabralor · 06/03/2024 18:25

Princess Margaret

She was just beautiful wasn't she!

Not a nice insinuation about the OP being a paid palace employee, republicans and monarchists alike are enjoying the lighthearted thread, please refer to the opening statement about not spoiling it for others if it’s not your cup of ☕️

Seconded.

MissTrip82 · 07/03/2024 09:50

I really like photos of the young QEII frocked up. Wearing low cut gowns and red lipstick and so on. She looked amazing. And I thought of them everytime there was some nonsense article about ‘royal protocol’ being nude nail polish or that the queen was annoyed with Kate or Meghan over a fashion choice.

heldinadream · 07/03/2024 09:51

Just popping on a few of Queen Victoria, because I can't see that she's made an appearance yet.
I am not a royalist but I'm enjoying the thread enormously. Major part of our culture, much to enjoy, appreciate, and think about. Thanks @pipsfromthefuture

Agree, and it’s interesting to see how much cultural resonance they actually have, especially for a republican like me
