How bloody tragic, in so many ways. He appears to have shot himself.

I know two families who lost loved ones in this way, another family who's loved one hung themself. It's such a shock to them.

Why would there be any embargo on the cause of death of a minor royal connection? And why for a few hours? It was pretty clear it would be a suicide by the reporting. Awful for the family, and beyond letting close friends and family know there's no public interest in a delay that I can imagine.

The announcement of his death came from Buckingham Palace, so the Palace press team was handling the announcement of his death (they don’t normally cover the non-working Kent relations, but they do deal with big family announcements - the Palace also announced Gabriella and Thomas’ engagement for example).

I imagine given what else was going on that day the press team agreed with the family what time they wanted the news released and sent it out under embargo until that time. That’s any big organisation’s normal way of working. And also it meant no-one outside of the family knew what was going on and so did not pay Prince and Princess Michael of Kent any particular attention at the memorial service.

Why would there be any embargo on the cause of death of a minor royal connection?

The Palace press team probably anticipated that there’d be considerable interest in the death of a member of the extended Royal family at a young age. Turns out, they were entirely correct there - it was very widely covered in the Uk and abroad.

At his age a sudden death was only ever going to be one of a handful of things. So very, very sad.

A friend killed himself many years ago and none of us who were close to him could have possibly anticipated it, but the guilt of thinking that you should have never goes away.

I had a friend who didn't show up for an arranged walk - I thought something was awry as he wasn't responding to messages or phone calls, or me calling at his house.

His death was ''Inconclusive'' according to his relative..... but his long term {since schooldays} friend said he'd struggled with mental health for a long time.

I sincerely hope it wasn't suicide, because of the family religion suicide is considered taboo.. I still think of my friend often, and wish I'd been a more supportive friend.
He told me he was seeing his family at a religious festival , but turned out he refused their invitation.

Suicide grief hits very hard and is unique to each situation. Heartbreaking for them all - both the seemingly out of the blue as well as the violent nature of the method will wound them all very deeply.

Yes and though people who resort to suicide don't mean to be selfish, in practise the result is extremely selfish. You, as a mere friend, think about your dead friend forever. Their family is taumatised, forever sad and wondering. I feel most sorry for those who loved Thomas most and are left, and angry on their behalf.

R.I.P. Thomas.

My goodness how tragic.

PTSD could be a factor and maybe in time we can highlight the problems ex soldiers struggle with. Depression is an awful passenger in your life.

Possibly as we move to the fringe of the royal family there isn't the support that possibly would be given to more high profile members? There must be unique pressures (possibly financial) of being in the aristocracy where you aren't a high profile royal but there is an incumbent sense of expectation.

Hoglet70 · 02/03/2024 08:35

I sincerely hope nothing awful is going to surface about him now and that's why he did it. His poor wife. I just can't imagine how she must feel right now.

I wonder if financial pressures were a factor. I believe his parents must have been expecting it due to the way they behaved when they realised he wasn't in the house. I'm not sure my parents would immediately start looking for me, would probably assume I had gone to the shop.

CarrotOfPeace · 02/03/2024 08:42

May his soul rest in peace.

Hoglet70 · 02/03/2024 08:42

@Honestlyy that's a good point. I'm not sure anyone would look for me that quickly either. Poor bloke.

Geebray · 02/03/2024 08:57

I have a theory as to what may have contributed to his state of mind. PM me if you want to discuss it.

well they went for lunch with him so no doubt had a conversation, and the dad took the dogs out, so he wouldnt have been oblivious - not really our business

mids2019 · 02/03/2024 09:28

I wonder to what extent the fact they didn't have children was a factor in the decision. I suppose love of children may be a strong pull from such action?

The deceased's career in investment banking could have led him to make substantial loses in the markets and perhaps he was personally liable? I don't how much money such a distant royal would get off the state so I suppose their lifestyle has to be self sustaining. Financial shame is powerful too especially amongst those who at respected to have money as part of their position.

Willmafrockfit · 02/03/2024 09:31

he was a very minor relative to the royal family

Kenthighst · 02/03/2024 09:31

Lady Gabriella & Tom were photographed on Valentines day at an event, both looked beautiful, healthy, happy & relaxed.
It's another reminder that one never knows what goes on behind closed doors & always mindful.

Please stop. If you have any real sympathy for the family, just stop.

Are you going to tell off everybody on the thread who is speculating as to what may have contributed? Or just me? And I'm not even discussing it in public.

I’m asking anyone who is speculating to please stop.

I’ve reported the thread.

BirthdayRainbow · 02/03/2024 15:16

This would just add to the ill persons guilt and pressure to stay when they don't feel they can.

pipsfromthefuture · 02/03/2024 16:16

This is so sad. Just goes to how you never know what people are really going through.

Please do not do this! Trying to guilt-trip a suicidal person with the "what about your family?" shit is absolutely the worst thing you can do. Just listen to them and say as little as possible.

TomatoketchupfromMandS · 02/03/2024 16:48

Yes I think some of the comments here are from people that really don’t understand what it’s like to have serious depression.
