The royal family
Esse1234 · 15/02/2024 19:00

Katherine has visited Marlborough recently so may well be there, thinking about it wasn't it only William and Harry that went to Eton? None of the rest of the Royal family went there, Earl Spencer went to Eton though and I think has just written a book about how awful it was being sent to boarding school.

Esse1234 · 15/02/2024 19:14

Don't think it was ever made public where Viscount Severn went to school after Eagle House, nice that they've managed to keep it private.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 15/02/2024 19:20

@easternenergizer Oh cripes we were always so glad we didn't have to wear them (played sports against Oundle)

Was it not Wellington? I'm sure Lady Louise went to St Mary's Ascot.

I don't buy Oundle. Fit seems wrong.
Agree re: the culottes. But the girls I know who currently have to wear them like them!

My perception of Charterhouse is lots of drugs and alcohol. Might be out of date though as that was based on my peer group and before it went co-ed. I don't know any current parents/ pupils.

easternenergizer · 16/02/2024 00:48

Honestly, I find the British obsession with the Royals' lives borderline odd. It's just some kid's school choice at the end of the day. Which he will leave at 18.

Wherever he goes, hope he is happy. I see too many send their children to a school because it is "good/has nice facilities/some celeb went there etc." or their dad went there blah, but they're unhappy because they don't actually assess which is the right fit and it was wrong for their child.

Hope all parents nowadays take note of that at least, even Kate. I'm sure she will.

HeadShoulderHipsandCalves · 16/02/2024 09:36

I used to know someone incredibly dim who went to Oundle - is it selective now?

Gottseidank · 16/02/2024 09:49

I have friends who went to Oundle in the 80s and am aware of a couple of children from my dc’s old prep who are there currently. It seems solid to me, like an unpretentious, old fashioned sort of place.

Not selective like Eton/Westminster same CE pass mark for years I believe, 55 average.

But the school has, from speaking to people who were there before me (say before 2000/2005) compared to my relatively recent time (left under 10 years ago), really improved. Including Academics. But I think, rather, it is down to an ethos change, it is quite hard-working now. There were genuinely people arriving in bottom sets that ended up going to Oxford and I remember working v. hard and being challenged to be driven.

But even then, there were still a few people that didn't pull their finger out and didn't reach their potential I guess. Same as any other school.

I don’t think people on this thread are obsessed with the royals per se, they are obsessed with school admissions in general. You could start a 500 post thread about your own children if you wanted advice on sending them to a boarding school.

Bennettsister · 16/02/2024 16:02

So funny reading these. Have taught in a few boarding schools. Oundle has a great reputation. Sold, unpretentious. Head at Marlborough has mixed reviews. Charterhouse - would avoid. Drugs and more drugs with a dash of bullying. No way would they touch Brighton college or wellington - nouveau. (Not agreeing with that, just the facts!)

MaggieFS · 15/02/2024 11:02

Oundle is spread all over the town. Probably not a deal breaker but surely a campus school would be much easier?
(But then again I guess Eton is too?)

Absolutely this. Ditto Uppingham. If they’re looking for an East Midlands school then Oakham is basically a campus school in a town.

They currently have 18 Oxbridge offers this year.

But I would be cross if he did go because my hairdresser (who knows everyone and all the local gossip) told me that an infamous reality celeb looked at it for her children and was told that the school couldn’t guarantee the necessary security and she should look elsewhere.

You're assuming the school was being fully truthful, rather than picking a potential difficulty to put said infamous family off.....

JellyJazzy · 16/02/2024 16:15

Have they said they want a boarding school? I was presuming they'd choose a day school

Well, I didn’t like to say it because I’m sure the admissions team will be reading this thread. Do you know who I’m talking about?

Coronateachingagain · 16/02/2024 16:16

I wonder - how many of those Oxbridge offers are children that were also there for GCSEs? It is a favoured destination for HK/ Chinese boarders that are highly academic.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 16/02/2024 16:18

Eton = we have quite a few pupils whose ransom would probably be even higher than George’s.

No, I'm not that local and this one's passed me by. Twas just a wild stab in the dark

I'd they want a decent co-Ed day a school, I think they'll struggle in the area. Decent day = single sex in that necks of the woods. IIRC, but happy to be told otherwise!

dottiedodah · 16/02/2024 20:06

I think it will be Marlborough though! Kates old school and her siblings as well. The 3 children will be able to go together .Looks fab to me (Alas dont have 40k a year though!)
