So I see there is a brand-new Duke and Duchess of Sussex website. Very glossy.

But the self-aggrandising! I just read Meghan’s bio and - cringe - it was the worst of LinkedIn. Sometimes less is more!

Charles would never do that to Harry and Meghan. It's just theoretical. The titles are just too important to the pair of them (see website).

I think he is being forced to remove the Sussex titles, as they are now monetising. To be honest they have been doing it all along, leveraging their titles and connections to make money, but this is now blatant.

he won’t remove the prince title, but I would imagine the palace are now in discussions, inc with the prime minister and Home Secretary if they need to act, and remove the duke and Duchess of Sussex from them.

Do rebrands really work? They’re not offering anything new except to ramp up the royal connection (although it’s not new information is it). It just feels a bit grabby and desperate now.
You can’t polish a turd.

Why was Charles a prince from birth? He wasn’t the child of a monarch or the child of a son of a monarch?

He was the child of the heir, in direct line.

wildernesssw · 13/02/2024 21:01

Letters patent by George VI.

under the 1917 LP Charles wouldn't have been a 'prince' as it couldn't be inherited through the female line.

'On 22 October 1948, George VI issued letters patent allowing the children of his daughter Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh, and son-in-law Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to assume princely titles and the style Royal Highness; they would not have been entitled to them ordinarily, as grandchildren in the female line, until their mother ascended the throne as Elizabeth II. Thus her son was styled HRH Prince Charles of Edinburgh until his mother's accession. Otherwise the children would have been styled Earl of Merioneth and Lady Anne Mountbatten, respectively.'

Yes it’s just a rebrand to leverage their titles. But there appears to be a deficit of news on what they will actually do. Megan has signed for a new podcast thing, which is a bit odd as she faked most of the Spotify ones. I suspect they will sink into oblivion.

i think they are looking to be paid to do stuff as royals. After dinner speeches, awards, premiers. Lend their name to things for money as royals.

rent a royal basically.

I literally don’t understand why being rent a royal is better than being a royal. They probably wouldn’t have even had to work that much.

@ChimneyPot grandchild of a reigning monarch? Like A & L when Charles became King.

Actually for Charles, three weeks before his birth King George VI had issued letters patent granting a royal and princely status to any children of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh. Because the George V Letters Patent from 1917 were sexist and only passed titles to grandchildren in the male line.

As Elizabeth was George VI’s daughter, not his son, despite the fact she was heir to the throne her children would have otherwise have had no right to a Princely title.

This rule has stayed in place - it impacted Anne, whose children Peter and Zara were not Prince and Princess. QEII offered to give Anne’s husband a title when they got married so they’d be “at least” the children of an Earl or something, but Anne said no, she didn’t want that.

wildernesssw · 13/02/2024 21:11

I doubt the RF will do anything about their titles - you can't prevent anyone from referring to themselves as 'prince/ss of this-and-that' - there are dozens of people using titles that ceased to exist more than a century ago.

Let them make themselves ridiculous if they choose. As things stand the HRH won't formally be perpetuated past Archie and Lily. And if they want to refer to themselves in that way - well, let them. It is clear to everyone that they have no role or relationship with the RF. No different than if I started calling myself Princess Wilderness of Wherever.

The difference between 'royal' and 'rent-a-royal' - royal gets paid by the state to turn up to things socially worthy, rent-a-royal is paid to turn up to things where businesses can pay enough even if not very worthy

I quite like it - maybe I'll change my name by deed poll... do you think I'll get a Netflix deal?!

Lunde · 13/02/2024 21:23

If King Charles were to remove the Sussex Dukedom would it mean that they would revert to their other titles? Like Edward and Sophie were the Earl and Countess of Wessex prior to becoming Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh?

Would it not make Harry and Meghan Earl and Countess of Dumbarton?

Nosleepforthismum · 13/02/2024 21:23

Can someone explain to me why they need to do all this philanthropic charity stuff? How do they personally make money from it?

Could they not make money in a more usual way like investing in property/stocks and shares? Move to a slightly cheaper area, own a beautiful house with no mortgage and have a portfolio of investments that bring in money without lots of effort.

I wonder if they feel trapped and can’t imagine any other way to make money apart from courting publicity now. Meghan’s bio felt like it was written from a place of extreme insecurity and I have no idea why they don’t just scale it all right back and just stop being the face of anything.

And not make a personal profit from it. The payment is supposed to cover the expenses of doing the job - staff, appropriate clothing, hosting official events, travel, security as deemed necessary, etc. Meghan understood that part all right (allegedly) - 'I can't believe I'm not getting paid for this'.

H&M are, and always have been, hoping to make a personal profit from their royal status.

Thanks.
I thought the 1917 rules wouldn’t have included him so makes sense they did special letters patent abit like QEII did for the Cambridge children.

I can imagine it too Rishi Sunak and King Charles over a pot of tea discussing this because it's that important.

Sunak and Charles meet weekly? I thought that was common knowledge? The monarch and the pm always have done. It is his majesty’s government, and any removal of titles will need parliamentary support.

Strangely enough, there is a history of 'fixing' the titles in the line of succession. Long before the colour of a great-grandchild's skin was in question.
