if only some posters knew how they come across to others. Oh well, never mind

Indeed! , agree 👍

Lookingatthesunset · 09/02/2024 20:59

@Spriots "One of the issues though is that they never really took a step forward. Even before children, they didn't do many engagements".

I think that was deliberate planning on the part of the RF too? They know from experience that Kate and William are in it for the long haul, and they've let them have a chance to build up to it. They will be stuck with it all for long enough when they are King and Queen!

Before children and just after having Prince George, they were in Anglesey with William working as an air ambulance pilot...!

spriots · 09/02/2024 21:40

they were in Anglesey with William working as an air ambulance pilot...!

William was part time and Kate was doing what exactly?!

I will never understand why some posters are so desperate to defend these two

meercat23 · 09/02/2024 22:04

The part time role was with the air ambulance service in East Anglia. In Anglesey he served with the RAF ,at RAF Valley, in a full time role for three years and worked as an air rescue pilot.

MaturingCheeseball · 09/02/2024 22:15

What does it matter if William and Kate do not do loads of engagements? I think most people are satisfied with the odd public appearance, and the pageantry of state occasions. Suits me. And I am no.4 - will watch a royal wedding, all the Queen’s funeral, but otherwise not too interested.

Complaining about the rf cost ? Well, what about other expenditure that is truly wasteful or out of control? The waste and extravagance in local government is terrible. And dwarfs what the rf costs us.

myrtleWilson · 09/02/2024 22:19

I think its because some posters see it as a personal decision of K&W to 'be workshy' whereas others see it as a corporate decision of the company (The Firm) to learn from past and allow future very senior royals a 'staggered early years'. Either view point could be true or false and of course, the never explain/complain mantra means a void is created.

Personally, I've always been in favour of giving those future very senior royals their 'retirement time' upfront - I think it has benefits of creating (if the parenting is ok) a stable, secure environment for the next layer of heirs.

I read something - I think on here but could have been elsewhere about the generational turn that has happened over the last century in terms of life expectancy and what that may mean for future ages of ascension. I googled average age of ascension and to be honest it was higher than I thought (c44yrs) so am going to ponder a bit more...

spriots · 10/02/2024 08:06

I am a republican so I would rather none of them did any engagements.

What I find just ridiculous is the perpetual excuses made for this pair, more Kate than William.

Too young to work
Too busy with children to work
Actually they do work really hard behind the scenes

They will string it out until their defenders go for too old to work, I am sure😅

But I do agree with @myrtleWilson that it's clearly not an argument anyone can really win because it is subjective so I am out.

I wonder if she had Crohn's disease, that would make more sense than a hysterectomy for the longer stay in hospital and the longer recovery period. There's a mental adjustment to living with a colostomy bag too.

Mylovelygreendress · 10/02/2024 09:02

The Wales family have- apparently- gone to Amner for a few days . Yet again , no photos yet poor Meghan can’t go for a drive/hike/wander across car park without being papped.

ajandjjmum · 10/02/2024 11:52

Apparently the new private secretary appointed by Prince William is a trustee of the Crohn's charity - I did wonder if there was a connection.

Glad they're able to travel to Anmer as a family.

It's not an airport lounge in here - no one needs to announce their departure.

There was an interesting Tiktok today with lots of balanced discussion about this. Consensus being it was almost certainly bowel related but you can often get a temporary Jpouch which gets reversed after a while. So it's nothing permanent but the time frame of surgery and recovery are roughly the same.

Another person wrote that apparently Kate followed a special diet due to stomach problems (this was almost 10 years ago) which would fit with having Crohns or UC. The upside is that many people feel much, much better after surgery and go back to having a huge chunk of their lives and energy back. This would be good for Kate if she had to take up responsibilities as Queen sooner rather than later.

CoffeeCantata · 10/02/2024 13:04

I agree with posters saying that the policy for W & C is probably: look at the long-term picture. If the monarchy remains, they will be starting their most busy time when most of us might expect to be slowing down or even retiring (I know the King's recent illness may have changed this, obviously). But that will have been the assumption until fairly recently. Therefore, it seems fair and wise to let them focus on their children while they are young. I haven't got a problem with it and frankly, I can't understand why anyone has. The oft-heard MN jibe 'Why do you care?' seems appropriate here!

And I also think Catherine's problems are gastro-intestinal. Crohn's, or some kind of inflammatory bowel disease does seem to fit the case in a number of ways. Poor Catherine - I had a very good friend who had Crohn's and it made her life hell until she got a colostomy, which gave her a new lease of life. My son also had a colostomy twice as a child (now reversed) and I can tell you, it takes some time to settle down to and to be able to manage. I really hope things go well for her.

I also hope, if this is the actual situation, that some of those nasty posters on MN and elsewhere who've bitched about her for her extreme slimness will hang their heads in shame. These bowel conditions often make it hard to put on weight, or maintain weight, and, in my son's case, it was hard keeping food inside him long enough for any benefit to be extracted. I also think this diagnosis would explain why she does often look tired and drawn - my friend had exactly the same look with Crohn's.

mrsmingleton · 10/02/2024 16:59

I think this may be along the right line @CoffeeCantata. I myself suffer from a gastro condition which infringes on day to day living and I couldn't imagine how it must be being in a public role with something like this. If this is the case and even if it isn't I hope the Princess of Wales is recuperating well and continues to do so. I don't understand the mentality of people attacking others when they are ill as has been done on several threads here.

I think a lot of it Meghan arranges

The workshy rumours have followed both William and Kate for many many years.

Oh yes the Express, such a quality newspaper! Besides, why shouldn't he work 80hrs? He'd only be paid for the hrs worked.

Isn't Pippa just as slim as Kate. She may well have Crohns, but it might not be causing weight loss.

Phew, thank God we're back talking about the PoW, thread took a funny turn for a few pages back there 😳

It certainly did!

And when one person makes a snidey comment

“if only some posters knew how they come across to others. Oh well, never mind”

and five others feel the need to comment that they agree - it like being back in the school playground 😂😂

Anyway, to get back to the matter in hand, I agree with Coffeecantata that it could be a deliberate strategy that the PoW’s has a lighter schedule while his dc are young but I don’t think it’s a particularly wise one, because if you want someone to grow in to a high profile role without much personal time, it’s far better imho if the work load becomes second nature when young. It’s far harder to adapt to it later.

Also, barring serious illness within the family, I just don’t understand the need to take so much time off when you have sixty staff who are carrying most of the work load and your role is to be well briefed and show up and be knowledgeable and charming.

Totally agree that nasty comments about Princess of Wales’s weight are uncalled for.

Fringepolitics294 · 13/02/2024 08:34

correction: it’s like being back in the school playground

One other thing: there is so much sycophantic talk in the media about the royal family being stretched and Princess Anne stepping up. If that’s the case then PoW should step up himself now he’s of age.

mrsmingleton · 13/02/2024 14:40

I see Pippa is on holiday in St Barts with her family. That's a good sign that all is well with the Princess of Wales in her recovery.
