Happy Birthday, Spare!

It’s the one year anniversary of the release of Spare, how are you all celebrating?!

In all seriousness, a year on what impact do you think the book has had on the Royal Family and the Sussexes?

In my opinion it clearly did very well commercially but in popular culture it became a bit of a joke. In terms of the RF I’m not sure it made much difference - to people who already didn’t like them it confirmed what they already believed, to people who did like them it was more evidence that Harry was no loss. I also think even a year later it has made reconciliation between William and Harry impossible.

I can't give a response to a fantasy post.

I was answering the OP with my opinion. not inviting your commentary, especially when you have clearly not grasped what I have said. I am not distressed by his book, I am distressed at the victimhood zeitgeist the book has tapped into. Nobody is responsible for my kids, except my DH and I and my kids, that’s the point. I want them to take personal responsibility about how they deal with what happens to them, not point their finger at everyone else and claim victimhood.

BTW that works both ways - nobody else is responsible for Harry’s children either except his parents.

I wonder what their books are going to be like

Mothers Day Mom GIF by IFC

To some it could be like Mary Poppins.

To others it could be like Mommie Dearest.

I’m hoping they are happy enough to not want to go down that route.

Trying to get the thread back on track 🤣

Follow-up questions:

  • Do you think Harry got what he hoped to get out of disclosing what he did in Spare?
  • What does he do next?

I don't know what Harry hoped to get out of Spare. Am I right that he mentioned taking back the narrative from the press? It's a while ago and I can't remember. If that was his aim, sadly I don't think it was possible. In the age of social media it isn't realistic to try to control the narrative anymore.

I think that they are showing us already what the next stage is. Keeping their heads mostly down, staying mostly out of the public eye and working with their charities. (The aviation thing is a bit of a distraction and I wonder whether he got caught up in that before he realised what it was, it's probably easily done when the US meaningless awards circuit is new to you).

Side note
On the Andrew front, my understanding is that he has a legal tenancy of Royal Lodge that has many years yet to run. I'm not sure how you get around that, much as I would love to see him downgraded to a property more fitting his status as just a private member of the family. I don't care if he goes to church, lots of the family without roles do that, I just care that he stays an official pariah.

You don't have to ask for my commentary. It's a discussion forum so I'm joining in. I'm not really sure what the victimhood zeitgeist is? I know victims of bullying or abuse seem to have more ability to speak up but I'm not sure you mean that.

Yes Harry is responsible for his own children. Not sure I've said otherwise.

Charles could do it if he wanted. Pay him back the money he paid for the lease.

He keeps saying he wants him out, I think he's just making the right noises and has no intention of doing anything about it

I think you are right. I hope that he knew that Taking on the press was going to make life so hard.

Can Charles do that against Andrew's wishes? I thought he had to agree to accept the money and that was the problem. I'm old enough to remember "Randy Andy", he has always been delusional and distasteful, I can't see him agreeing to make things easy for Charles.

ArcaneWireless · 13/01/2024 19:56

I don’t doubt that PA would dig his heels in and start with various demands/conditions. Delusional and distasteful? Aye.

Victimhood narrative there too though I feel.

Roussette · 13/01/2024 19:59

Charles is the King... he could do anything he wanted.

Of course, that opens up a can of worms because he has the inside knowledge and apparently he has threatened a book

That first bit reminds me of a book I used to read to my child when they.were little. It's called Cantankerous King Colin and really quite funny.

jeffgoldblum · 13/01/2024 20:08

Poor op ! , tried to get her thread back on track and obviously Andrew makes his slimy way over!!
Why , why must we continue to have Andrew brought up on a thread about Harry!
They are completely different people, they do completely different things.
If the only defence of Harry posters can think of .... is but Andrew did this .... but Charles did that , then clearly you haven't much of a defence!
It's tired, old and cliched and frankly childish, it's the adult equivalent of .... well John did it .

ArcaneWireless · 13/01/2024 20:09

Another Gobshite author in the family?

Start practicing the face flower….

Ye nailed it last time.

Happy Birthday, Spare!
pilates · 13/01/2024 20:11

Agree Jeff

It goes Andrew, Charles & Camilla

Boring and very predictable 🥱

Roussette · 13/01/2024 20:11

Why must we have H&M brought up on any thread not connected to them?

Works both wayss!

Although I’d be quite interested as to how he would address the dirty great elephant in the room.

I daresay he will keep it zipped because I reckon he’ll be worried about his own worms venturing out of the can.

So are you saying two wrongs make a right?
Or is it tit for tat?
John jumped off the bridge, so we all must too , otherwise it just wouldn't be fair!
