In George’s case on mn - or indeed any school age member of the Royal family - it’s an opportunity to a) point out repeatedly that members of the RF are stupid and b) all Etonians are thick (because some politicians that posters don’t like went there)

Is this the post of mine you’re referring to? I said in the first sentence ‘on mn’ meaning mumsnet in general. I’m sorry if that’s not clear.
If five year old posts are ludicrous, then how many years back could i quote posts to support my assertion?

I have to say... with all due respect, and I don't mean to be rude... but to link one post from 15 years ago or whatever is totally irrelevant! I could find any opinion on anything if I went to look for it in the last 15 years!

I am only responding to you saying that all MNers think Etonians are thick and stupid and I naturally assumed you meant this thread!

There are certain opinions on MN that are prevelant and a bit odd but that is not one I have ever heard of, and I've been here since dinosaurs roamed the earth!

I don’t think I did say all MNers - I said ‘In George’s case on mn - or indeed any school age member of the Royal family - it’s an opportunity to a) point out repeatedly……’ etc.
I should’ve made it clearer by saying ‘in George’s case some posters on mn……’etc

@goodbyestranger " Which - to get back to the OP - is where I'm hoping Eton is now at too. That would be progress too."

Frankly, I don't much care about Eton-I don't care whether they take very rich very clever boys or just very rich boys. I do care very much about who gets in to Oxbridge though.

goodbyestranger · 01/01/2024 20:28

Minutewaltz in defence of the 2009 poster - can I just repeat that George was not alive at the time of the post.

goodbyestranger · 01/01/2024 20:31

CurlewKate obviously completely fair that that's what you care about most but tbf it isn't the subject of this thread. I've been involved in educational access for a long time (not any more - retired) but that hasn't been to the exclusion of having views about the toxicity of the current rf.

derxa · 01/01/2024 20:35

It is often stated on the political threads that Boris Johnson is not bright. He went to Eton ergo Eton pupils are not bright.

Roussette · 01/01/2024 20:39

Boris Johnson isn't thick, but given his house master's appalling report on him, he said he has a huge sense of entitlement and a gross failure of responsibility. We all know that.

I don't think all Eton pupils are thick. Course they're not.

That’s a factual statement about BJ but those anti Tory threads were full of assertions that BJ is not that bright. And by bright they mean academically able.

goodbyestranger · 01/01/2024 20:47

Boris's tutor (still at Oxford) has also very recently told the guy who runs a very popular food stall in Oxford that Boris wasn't anything like as smart as he thought he was, and that guy has repeated that to current students including one of my DC. That's a slightly euphemistic version too.

goodbyestranger · 01/01/2024 20:48

derxa the tutor can probably call it.

Who knows. He thinks he talks the talk that's for sure. My opinion of him is so rock bottom, I wouldn't like to comment on his academic capabilities.

How unprofessional

Yes, ok. As I said, I meant that on mumsnet a lot of posters have a low opinion of Etonians - whether because of Tory politicians or because they’re posh and rich I don’t know.
Rousette and Goodbyestranger said they hadn’t seen evidence that, meaning on this thread. I meant mumsnet in general which is why I looked for evidence from any thread.

newnamethanks · 01/01/2024 21:02

Boris is a scammer, a flim flam man, a chancer and a blagger who will say whatever is expedient at the time to whomsoever he is addressing. This requires some self-serving intelligence but is not an appropriate way to govern any country. Which is where I came in. Our recent government has been full of Eton educated charlatans who have proved to be a poor advertisement for their school. As previously mentioned, given the examples which have been on public display for the last 11? years, it would come as no surprise if the Waleses were considering other options for their sons.

Roussette · 01/01/2024 21:02

Yes but 15 years ago?! That's silly. Sorry but it is.

Given that MN have about 35,000 posts or whatever a day, you could find any opinion if you wanted!

And it's not 'a lot of posters'. It's two in 15 years! (yes I know there are probably more, but still...)

I have no idea of other Etonians. I know one Doctor, ex Etonian, great guy as I said.

And the two I don't like who shall remain nameless lol

CurlewKate · 01/01/2024 21:22

It's completely ridiculous to say that Etonians are dim. You have to be very clever to get in. It says nothing about emotional intelligence, common sense or anything else. But academic intelligence? Of course!

goodbyestranger · 01/01/2024 21:40

How unprofessional

Probably acceptable for a student who's left Oxford several decades previously and who is so obviously pleased with his own intellect and all his big classical words.

You seem to know a lot of unprofessional people in education.

Then don't bleeding enter the kid for the entrance exam.

goodbyestranger · 01/01/2024 21:46

My youngest DD is an Oxford Classicist who sometimes goes to this food stall.

I'm not sure what other unprofessional people I know in education who I've cited on this thread (another poster referenced someone from George's previous school - perhaps that's what you're thinking of?).

I mean also, give us a break. People gossip in the professions as well as in all other walks of life. Get real. Part of the rich tapestry etc. Not everyone is massively uptight.

goodbyestranger · 01/01/2024 21:48

(Tbf I've come across a number of unprofessional people in education; simply not cited them on this thread).

I was a teacher. I never discussed former pupils.

newnamethanks · 01/01/2024 21:57

Do you seriously think that if Prince G had sat and failed an exam that his parents would parade him publicly so that people like us could engage in petty unpleasant speculation about their child? I think it very unlikely.

goodbyestranger · 01/01/2024 22:03

derxa well good for you. Very professional.

goodbyestranger · 01/01/2024 22:09

newnamethanks no I don't think they'd parade him that would be weird but given how clumsy their PR team seems to be I can well believe that they would brief the DM with a bullshit story about how much they suddenly love Malborough. That would not be parading. That would just be a misguided attempt to protect the kid from people putting two and two together and coming up with four. The rf really does seem to think the public are even dumber than them. Astonishing.
