Extensive Phone Hacking by MGN

So... Harry has won his case.

As lawyers are saying now... this is massive. 15 out of 33 accusations of hacking by Harry were upheld as a result of phone hacking and other illegal practices.
Hacking and blagging were even taking place during the Leveson enquiry.

He has won damages of £140,000 plus. And before this thread descends into Harry hate, please think of all the other claimants who have also had their claims upheld and damages awarded to them. They went through hell, medical records hacked and reported on, trackers on cars, phones hacked...

It's not about the money, it's about 'accountability of power'.

I’ve been seeing these snide posts since the first OS thread. I cracked. Sad.

No lest a clarion call of particular posters imply I’ve disappeared for some nefarious reason, I have to go play with my dog and start my day.

Cakester · 16/12/2023 11:24

Its perfectly possible to discuss this case, and what might happen now, without anything getting personal. Mentioning of other threads is common practice and certainly happened on those threads @Roussette mentions, with mockng and laughing at the important issues we were dicussing on other threads, so I think its strange to take umbrage with it just here and with just one particular poster.

Nobody here has once said Harry is a hero for this, but all the claimants that have the means to proceed and bring out into the open something that unfortunately was kept secret from us in so many other cases due to the wealth of the owners of the media involved, should be congratulated and thanked for it IMO. If you have had the wealth to do something about it, but chose not to for reasons of privacy, thats understandable. I admire those who use their positions and wealth to help us all though.

What were they meant to do?

It’s a constitutional monarchy - they can’t order the press about

They can't order the press about but what they could and should have done was to call out the vile, racist, nasty stories and headlines about Meghan Markle which were everywhere right from the get go.
They could have demonstrated their support for a woman from a different culture and race but they didn't. By their silence they were complicit. This in turn encouraged the media and contributors to social media to get bolder and more outrageous.
The results are clear, with a number of people receiving convictions for racially abusing Meghan Markle and threatening the lives of both her and Harry. Other reports are still being investigated. Read the words of Neil Basu in relation to Meghan. Sobering.
Still some continue to abuse.
Apologies @Roussette for slightly derailing. @Cakester your analysis is top notch. Thank you.

This is a good article, going back to Piers Morgan.

Mr Morgan was the Daily Mirror's editor between 1995 and 2004

So during the time extensive phone hacking took place.

Another crucial piece of evidence came from Benjamin Wegg-Prosser, who was once communications chief for Tony Blair in Downing Street.
In the same year that Mr Scobie had witnessed the chat about Ms Minogue, Mr Wegg-Prosser had dinner with Mr Morgan and asked him how his newspaper had discovered that the England football manager Sven Goran-Eriksson had an affair with television presenter Ulrika Jonson.
"Mr Morgan responded to my question by initially asking me which network provider I used for my mobile phone," he wrote in his witness statement to the court.
"Mr Morgan told me the default PIN for that network. He then explained that the default PIN numbers were well known and rarely changed, which is how mobile phone messages could be accessed remotely. He said to me, 'That was how we got the story on Sven and Ulrika', with a smile, or words to that effect."
That evidence was not challenged by MGN and was said by the judge to "speak for itself".

Lampzade · 16/12/2023 11:36

I suspect that Piers Morgan knew what the decision of the courts would probably be which is why he publicly named the alleged racists who talked about Archie’s skin tone
I have my own theories as to why he took this course of action..

Thank you @unbelieveable22

don’t register bullying of women you dislike.

Just re-read Camilla’s chapter. Nope - no “born mistress” and no bullying. Was it questionable linking an ancestor of hers who was also mistress to her? Yes. But the overall sense I get of Camilla from her chapter is a beauty with a good sense of humour who is a traditionalist and very much got the short end of the stick when it came to the bashing she had in the press and in public opinion.

Roussette · 16/12/2023 11:40

@Cakester
I saw actual footage this morning of Piers Morgan talking through how to hack into a phone with someone. I was half asleep but will hunt for it.

Apparently that is how Camilla introduced herself to Charles? Alice Keppel was one of her ancestors and so say had an affair with Edward VII

Agreed. Always going after Rousette - just bizarre.

It does work both ways. Those of us offering varying thoughts and opnions often have folk going after us too.

It's the nature of robust debate that if you have strong opinions you have to be able to cope with other's opinions too.

Cakester · 16/12/2023 11:48

if you're listening to someone else's voicemails and going around town telling people how to access other peoples voicemails, while editor of articles that used information from those voicemails, you know exactly what is going on.

Remember there are other claims and claimants who are lining up, he must be getting nervous.

Cakester · 16/12/2023 11:49

opinions are fine, personal attacks are not.

Oh my, this guy talking is so right. It was absolutely disgusting that Leveson 2 was cancelled and the Government should be hold to account for that decision.

Apparently the Judge said he found it extraordinary that Piers Morgan was not required to give evidence.

Harry's Legal Representative talking now.

Corbyn and Milliband pledged Leveson 2 and were bullied mercilessly by the press Sir Kier won't enact it either.

Absolutely!!! if you look back you can see the poster who threw out personal insults when she didn’t agree with what other posters said.

skullbabe · 16/12/2023 11:56

Sir Kier won't enact it either

But that doesn’t mean we give up. Some people will go to court, some people will lobby for legislation, some people will crowd source to support, some people will support teaching media literacy, and maybe just maybe some in government might have another enquiry.

Yes Janie, I agree, plus there has been other personal insults on this thread alone, ‘ your post sounds like a …… ‘ ‘you sound like bedgrudging’ although it appears it is par for the course.

Nor me.

This is an interesting clip... Hugh Grant talking about the Media in 2011. And Harry ten years later.
What's changed? Nothing.

We need Leveson 2

One of the people who should be thanked and mentioned on this thread as a leader in this issue is Max Moseley.

Max had an awful time after his private life became headline news. His son committed suicide.

Max took his case to court and won. He then went on to use his wealth to pay for others to take cases.

He was also influential in the final Levison report. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/max-mosley-was-the-brains-behind-the-leveson-report-8373892.html

Absolutely I don't think he gets nearly enough credit.
