@Iwantcakeeveryday don’t you think this year’s nominees are doing incredible work?? It’s honestly amazing that regular people like ourselves are doing this to hopefully leave the planet in a better way than they found it, I assume both yourself and I hope all the companies featured have a long and successful business model in the years to come!

Well done William & Harry on both your climate initiatives ( and also to the people doing the work on the ground)

boxedandribboned · 21/09/2023 10:15

Yes, it's fantastic that William is using his profile to promote these initiatives.

I saw one of the finalists (Colorfix) profiled on my local news last night and the work they are doing is really innovative.

As someone who works in conservation I wish I could have these ideas! In fact the initiatives I’ve seen all over the world in my job blows my mind!

The ocean cleanup is currently my favourite that is well documented another is a seagrass restoration one, how do people even start? I just turn up, do my job and go home again 😆 these people are so dedicated to making the planet a better place that they put these initiatives in front of their own needs! I’m genuinely blown away by all these people I come across worldwide and donate what I can to them!

smilesy · 21/09/2023 10:34

I am entitled to be critical of the projects and think I've made valid points about them.

Well not really. The only point about the projects you have made is wondering which one will have made a difference by 2030. Which is a moot point as we obviously don’t know yet. If you can be bothered to look at the Earthshot website, you can see that some of them are already having an effect. The point is anyway that it is better to do something positive other than just moan about climate change. Humans are not motivated by negativity.
So I think your criticisms are more directly aimed at William, which as pp have said, is a shame given that there is some good work going on here. Invictus has also done excellent work for some veterans, but it cannot solve all veterans problems. I would still say it is worthwhile and I know you would too as you have done elsewhere. So it’s a pity that a good project like Earthshot can’t be recognised whoever is at the helm.

Yes, this is a great company who have received a number of grants and funds already, this was from January this year,

' The European Union is a leader in funding technologies that enable our transition to a green economy. After nearly three years of funding and partnership, we are pleased to have proven what we set out to demonstrate: that the apparel and fashion industries can colour textiles through an environmentally low-impact method inspired by nature.... In the final months of the grant period last year, Colorifix closed an 18million series B fund-raising led by H & M CO:LAB the venture capital arm of the global retailer. The company is preparing for significant commercial scale-up in 2023 after developing partnerships with sustainable clothing brands including Pangaea'

So they are already in their growth stage and upscaling without the 1 million William is offering ( which seems teeny in comparison to figures above ) I have a couple of friends in the ethical fashion industry, so this is a great initiative, but William is a bit late to the party.

There is a Bali company that uses an amazing machine to clean up their rivers... I shall try and find the name that escapes me atm, but the amount of plastic they collect is staggering and embarrassing. For me, we must reduce that waste as a priority, which is a better solution than using precious resources to clean it up. I constantly reassess what we buy to reduce any plastic we still use, it is shocking and unacceptable how much ends up in our waterways and oceans.

boxedandribboned · 21/09/2023 10:39

@Iwantcakeeveryday

The finalist I saw interviewed said that they were very honored and excited to be nominated and that it had really raised their profile. I'd never heard of them before.

Some seem to be!

Iwantcakeeveryday · 21/09/2023 10:41

@boxedandribboned the industry is absolutely aware, and as I have shown they have received substantial funding already and have huge deals in place within the industry.

Again, scrutinising the work of the royals should be no more surprising than scrutinising politicians, which we all do and don't get defensive about. I think its normal to ask and look at projects they do and ask if they're achieving their aims and contributing something meaningful.

I've seen that machine in action in a clip

So agree on plastics, my DCs feel v strongly about it, they avoid as much as possible

Personally I have a lot of time for take3.org. I know it's nothing to do with Earthshot but it involves everyone, anyone can do this

Finally something we agree on , I just thought you we’re constantly negative 😆😆😆 That would be great if you can link it! 😍 I’ll try and donate if they are accepting donations 👍I haven’t spent much time in the Indian Ocean area unfortunately so don’t know too much about their initiatives

I live in the East Midlands so as far from the sea as you can get but my village do something similar in our surrounding countryside, our council have cut back on cleaning the streets so we just do ( and dare I say make a better job of it 😆) but when I am coastal I do my bit ( although very small compared to alot of people on here I assume)

Ineedwinenow · 21/09/2023 10:55

It drives me mad that people like William & Harry have to set up these funding opportunities, our councils and the central government should be offering incentives and investment throughout or country for these type of important improvements! ULEZ in the cities isn’t exactly helping with the current situation, it’s making locals poorer and the effect on pollution is apparently negligible so why can’t they invest in the type of initiatives both @Iwantcakeeveryday and @Roussette have posted about ( and Earthshot/Travelyst)

Iwantcakeeveryday · 21/09/2023 10:55

Finally something we agree on , I just thought you we’re constantly negative

Was there any need for that?

Iwantcakeeveryday · 21/09/2023 10:57

They are though, Colorifix also received funding from a group that includes govt depts. Councils have no money, I wouldn't expect them to fund such things. We can though!

Iwantcakeeveryday · 21/09/2023 10:59

In London I helped with river thames clean ups, it honestly is disgusting the amount people 1 use and buy and 2 just casually throw away without a care for the pollution or animal life it may affect. I have been picking up other peoples litter since I was a child! I have to stop myself telling people off when I see them drop rubbish!

Yeah it was needed a bit, even on this thread you were talking about Williams privilege and why are people bothered about Earthshot ! You could just have posted about the amazing work you posted above, yes the royals do have a ridiculous amount of wealth but this is about Earthshot nominations and subsequent eco work that’s worth a mention! But if you can link the Bali cleanup that would be great 👍

Iwantcakeeveryday · 21/09/2023 11:04

@Roussette absolutely, we pick up rubbish daily as I have done so most of my life... I also never go into town without taking things to the charity stores because if I buy something, I have to give something away! Slightly off topic but relevant in terms of reducing and reusing! We just got smaller bins from our council because we don't put out the big ones often enough as we can't fill them! My DH decided the letter explaining they had done the switch was somehow an official recognition of his efforts to reduce our rubbish!

why would I now you have been rude? Do you go on the threads about invictus telling all the posters criticising him endlessly the same thing? I don't recall it. It is entirely relevant on the royal board to criticise William when he is heading a climate change/environmenal project and getting praise for it, about his own carbon footprint. Of course it is. I know supporters don't think he should ever be criticised, but he its tax payer funded and therefore scrutiny over his own lifestyle is part of the role.

I don’t go on Royal boards, so I have no idea what you post unfortunately 🤷‍♀️I’m only on these Earthshot threads as they came in active and I support conservation work! I also have supported Invictus as I have injured service personnel in my family and watched most of the games

It’s not directed at anybody. It’s a general observation 🙄

Ineedwinenow · 21/09/2023 11:47

@Iwantcakeeveryday I’ve just gone back through my posts to yourself and I genuinely didn’t call you rude, I did say you were being negative towards the thread but if someone has called you rude them I’m so sorry, they shouldn’t have said that, I called you negative as I was just hoping this thread ( unlike the last Earthshot thread) would be about the nominees (and other eco work) not about William and his family!

You are entitled to have your opinion and that’s what makes a forum interesting but if you set up another thread about tax payers money and their lifestyle then you might get a more balanced opinion people (I might even join in, even though I don’t go on those boards) and their thoughts, I genuinely just wanted this thread not to turn into the last thread which was full of disdain of the Windsor family and people calling William “Willy” and Harry “Harold”

MrsFinkelstein · 21/09/2023 12:49

I thought this was a thoughtful touch, and hopefully one we'll seem more of.

@Ineedwinenow Sungai watch is the bali org, they put special barriers called 'trash booms' in the rivers, to stop the rubbish going into the ocean, then they collect the trash by hand and sort it to dispose or recycle, which is a huge job. I like the idea of collecting it before it gets to the ocean and support groups like sungai for that reason. Obviously stopping people throwing trash away and reducing plastic are also important.

@MrsFinkelstein one of our kids got that same thing somewhere, didn't produce any wildflowers but that could of been our fault- or the cats digging!
