The Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Invictus Games 2023

Most of the Invictus threads seem to be filling up, or focused on fairly parochial issues, so I thought, now that Meghan is in Dusseldorf, I would lead us off with a general new thread about Harry and Meghan at Invictus 2023.

Some initial thoughts from me.

The UK tabloid narrative about how much Harry and Meghan are loathed globally is blown apart by the warm and rousing welcome they both received, both separately and together. So the UK tabloids have to dig deep to write eye-rollingly silly stories about Harry being "humiliated" because he did not score a goal during a fun, light-hearted TV appearance to promote the Games.

Invictus clearly means everything to Harry, and it is lovely to see Meghan supporting him, and to remember that it was at Invictus in Toronto that they first went public. The event must have such lovely memories for them both.

Favourite picture: Meghan with Glory Essien, the Nigerian athlete.

The Nigerians have really lit up the tournament. A Kenyan senator who met Harry last week posted on X that she would work on Kenya to be the next African team.

After everything in the last year, it's so lovely to see that Invictus is getting bigger, that Harry is as committed as he has always been to the Games he started, and that Meghan is there to support the veterans, and her husband.

Here's another look from Meghan!

She looks fab!

Blazer, romper, and nice shades

It would seem Zara is back in favour 😆

Roussette · 15/09/2023 16:26

Tindall or the shop?!

Didn’t Meghan have a syanara Zara party? 😂

She did? When did she say that?

Allegedly she did not when she got her part in Suits and had earned enough to buy designer brands. I’ve no idea if it’s true or not, but it originated in Vanity Fair and was widely reported (it’s an easy google search) Page Six has picked up on this tooSee here

Meghan Markle returns to Zara after reportedly saying ‘Sayonara’ to the brand in her pre-royal days

The Duchess of Sussex made a surprising sartorial choice when she sported an affordable romper to take in the Invictus Games in Germany on Friday.

Ok so she didn't say that then.

From Vanity Fair all they said is:

"According to a Hollywood source, when her star was rising she threw herself a party at her home unofficially billed as a “Sayonara Zara” party and gave away the lower- priced clothes in her closet to her guests."

Hmm, well the PageSix article itself seems quite contradictory, seeing how she got Suits in 2011, and they have a photo of her in Zara in 2016, and left Suits a year later.

But you're right. It is alleged but doesn't make much sense😂

YupIKnow · 15/09/2023 20:53

Imagine giving your cheap clothes away to your friends ! Gee whizz 😂

Samcro · 15/09/2023 22:00

There was a bit on the one show with Harry. It was lovely to see him be so natural with the veterans and their families

I wonder why you seem so alarmed that she might actually have said this. Why would it matter if she had? If she felt that she wanted to celebrate the fact that she could afford to wear higher end clothes, why shouldn’t she? I was only light heartedly observing that if (and I stress if) she had said goodbye to Zara clothes, she now appears to have changed her mind. But no biggie 🤷‍♀️

I'm not at all "alarmed", thank you.

I tend to just prefer separating fact from fiction. Especially when it can be used to needlessly beat someone with a stick with.

But it seems like it is in fact fiction, and you're right - good for her! She looks great.

No biggie 💁💁.

Meghan looked really stunning in that cream outfit I thought.. the one with the sleaveless knitted V neck. Really suited her and she has such a tiny shape. I though she looked beautiful.

Hillcrest2022 · 16/09/2023 00:12

There's a lot of mean girl comments on this thread against Meghan which I find really uncomfortable.

Is this not a forum.for women ro support other women? Maybe she's made mistakes and is finding her way but the vitriol is really disproportionate.

YupIKnow · 16/09/2023 00:29

Women always have to support other women regardless of what they have done or said or they are mean? I don't think so.

ALittleTeawithmilk · 16/09/2023 00:39

No. Women don’t have to support other women regardless. But when you are regularly criticising a woman for what she is wearing or has worn, and what she has done in the past or present, then you need to take a look at yourself. (By ‘you’ I mean anyone constantly driven to find fault with a woman). At best, you start to sound like a broken record, and at worst you have hatred for that woman. Regardless, your opinion won’t be valued.

BackToWhereItAllBegan · 16/09/2023 01:26

I think Meghan has looked lovely this week. I suspect the outfits are much closer to her original, more natural style than when she feels she has to 'dress as a Duchess'.
When she wears the power suits or overly fussy red carpet styles, I think she looks really uncomfortable but in shorts and flats or sequin skirts and slim fitting tops (Beyoncé concert), she looks much more relaxed.

Hillcrest2022 · 16/09/2023 01:34

Bravo @BackToWhereItAllBegan xx

accountpasswordaboutyou · 16/09/2023 07:14

Yeah, agreed she looks really stylish and comfortable… and happy.

Honestly. A high profile couple have made a career out of negativity, telling stories about others and being bitter. They attend/host an event that focuses on positivity, determination and not letting the past define you. Throw into that faux matching with military, wearing clothes best suited for a private social event and folk will have an opinion.

Nothing to do with wimmin not being allowed to wear what they like or this poor persucted pair who had to flee for their lives being persecuted further. They made a career out of negativity, perhaps they shouldn't dish it if they can't take it.

Well done to all the positive participants. I hope Harold has been inspired to do better.

beatan · 16/09/2023 07:22

Some coverage from FOX news ALL about the veterans, thought some folks here might appreciate it. The reporter is a veteran too.

It's everything to do with that from you. But you are a bit of a lone voice on here... never mind! Why she can't wear skinny jeans and a vest top, god alone knows. Given the positive reports on them, I don't s'pose they're losing sleep about your relentless negativity about them. I think they can take it lol
I would think they're having a blast engaging with all these wonderful athletes, families and children. So don't worry about it.

Janiie · 16/09/2023 07:59

'But you are a bit of a lone voice on here'

Do you only ever go on mumsnet?! Do you not see my 'lone voice on here' is actually a very common opinion. I'm not worried about it all just stating facts. If he wants to be taken seriously as the patron of an organisation that focuses on positivity, family, community, moving on, then he needs to demonstrate these values himself. Lead by example if you like. Let's hope there's no more books or gossip shows in the pipeline with lists of woes and grievances.
