The Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Invictus Games 2023

Most of the Invictus threads seem to be filling up, or focused on fairly parochial issues, so I thought, now that Meghan is in Dusseldorf, I would lead us off with a general new thread about Harry and Meghan at Invictus 2023.

Some initial thoughts from me.

The UK tabloid narrative about how much Harry and Meghan are loathed globally is blown apart by the warm and rousing welcome they both received, both separately and together. So the UK tabloids have to dig deep to write eye-rollingly silly stories about Harry being "humiliated" because he did not score a goal during a fun, light-hearted TV appearance to promote the Games.

Invictus clearly means everything to Harry, and it is lovely to see Meghan supporting him, and to remember that it was at Invictus in Toronto that they first went public. The event must have such lovely memories for them both.

Favourite picture: Meghan with Glory Essien, the Nigerian athlete.

The Nigerians have really lit up the tournament. A Kenyan senator who met Harry last week posted on X that she would work on Kenya to be the next African team.

After everything in the last year, it's so lovely to see that Invictus is getting bigger, that Harry is as committed as he has always been to the Games he started, and that Meghan is there to support the veterans, and her husband.

The marching isn't good - how awkward.

beatan · 16/09/2023 16:26

I thought the marching went as well as it could have, not awkward at all. I can't wait for the closing ceremony.

YupIKnow · 16/09/2023 16:30

She is a civilian. It's awkward.

I disagree, it's not awkward.

I hope not. Imagine how nasty the haters would be. This thread has descended into a lot of nasty posts about Meghan. Imagine what those posters would say about her children

beatan · 16/09/2023 16:56

This is great to hear, invictus australia already exists.

There are many nasty posts even without the kids being seen often, i hope they don't let haters stop their kids from experiencing the games, it's an amazing thing.

I don't know if awkward is the word I'd use but as a veteran parades and marching take on a different meaning and its just bizarre and disrespectful in this case in my opinion- especially at what is essentially a military event. I think it's something she won't understand, did Harry March at all?

i don't think the march was needed tbh but don't find it as awkward as others seem to. yes, harry had his own match.

They should, it's quite a legacy taking shape.

This is what the Games are about, hearing that the Mayor so inspired to continue what he's experienced the past week. The online world is what it is, what are the experience of those that it is supposed to serve?

'It's only Meghan who would get this unfair criticism'

🥱

We regularly have critical comments about all of them. Even the poor kids get slated for wearing shorts and looking like 'victorian kids'.

She should have worn clothing suitable for sporting events and left her many outfits for an appropriate time. Tone deaf, the pair of 'em.

Why should she wear sporting clothes when she's not an athlete?! She's there as a representative, as Harry's wife, rousing the crowd, giving speeches and handing out medals, why is it a crime if she's wearing something nice for that??

Did the Queen wear joggers at her many sporting events? Lol, no, because it wasn't necessary for her to do so! Grin

Those on here who don't think he had an abusive childhood because he was bought up in money have no idea.

Affluent abuse, which it is called is real. Money and privilege don't buy you a decent childhood. I know that for a fact as I lived it. Thank god mine was in the private arena and not public.

As for H and M responding to it. They had hundreds of thousands of articles and books written about them vilifying them.

They are allowed to respond. I bet you would. Those of you moaning about them have not sat and read Spare or watched the documentaries with an open mind.

Those I know who have been shocked
The racism in this country and the death threats to M life are real. There are interviews with the police on this

The info is our there of them being vilified, but some of you just want to hold them responsible for standing up for themselves.

You see money some of you and think they haven't had any problems. Rubbish.

As for Charles, he said far more than his childhood being cold. He was openly hostile and deogratory about his parents. Chatles affair never stopped. He was shagging Camilla the night before he married. Diana was used as a breeding machine and abused. No, she wasn't perfect. However, she was in emotional abuse. The interview she did she was conned into on a lie by Martin Bashir, which came out recently

We don't pay for H & M. They make their own money. M had her own money when she came into the RF. She was a multi millionaire in her own right.

To be blunt, some of the vile newspapers' journos have said the lies and twisted truths have come out of KP and William office. The reason: H and M were too popular here. That couldn't happen

Also, it's known that W & K marriage is in trouble, so this is another cover of making up rubbish about them.

They always knew M would leave. H wasn't supposed to go. They've never gotten over it.

As for Invictis and camera shots, very good photos and Zoom on the mobiles bring excellent shots. The Sun was spotted at Invictus this week. He ducked down out of the way fuming, he had got in.

Look at the type of people who have slated them. They are a demographic of mysogonist and right-wing racists

Petrilina Wyatt
Richard Madely
Phillip Schofield
Danny Baker
Spencer Morgan
Lady Camilla Tominely

The list goes on. I'm not saying H & M are perfect. No one is. The media who say they are irrelevant keep bringing them up. Why? Cos they are worth millions to them in clickbait.

Good post @keffie12 👏People from all walks of life can grow up with abusive childhoods that appear OK from the outside, and emotional abuse/neglect often have the most damaging and long-lasting effects on adults.

She wasn't wearing wee shorts, they were long shorts. I think she looked perfectly respectable.

I hate the word 'sliders'. Just sayin'😂

I think they're burgers too but what do I know

She can't win can she?

What's inappropriate about smart leather sandals at an event on a hot day? They're not 'sliders' they're the kind of smart flats many of us wear to work. What would be 'appropriate' to you then, four inch heels?
