The Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Invictus Games 2023

Most of the Invictus threads seem to be filling up, or focused on fairly parochial issues, so I thought, now that Meghan is in Dusseldorf, I would lead us off with a general new thread about Harry and Meghan at Invictus 2023.

Some initial thoughts from me.

The UK tabloid narrative about how much Harry and Meghan are loathed globally is blown apart by the warm and rousing welcome they both received, both separately and together. So the UK tabloids have to dig deep to write eye-rollingly silly stories about Harry being "humiliated" because he did not score a goal during a fun, light-hearted TV appearance to promote the Games.

Invictus clearly means everything to Harry, and it is lovely to see Meghan supporting him, and to remember that it was at Invictus in Toronto that they first went public. The event must have such lovely memories for them both.

The Nigerians have really lit up the tournament. A Kenyan senator who met Harry last week posted on X that she would work on Kenya to be the next African team.

After everything in the last year, it's so lovely to see that Invictus is getting bigger, that Harry is as committed as he has always been to the Games he started, and that Meghan is there to support the veterans, and her husband.

I won't forget this view of yours when your beloved Kate attends various sports events.
I hope to see her melting into the background with one colour polo shirt and joggers on. Wouldn't want her to draw attention away from any competitors in a sport would we...

I’m not policing what she wears. She can wear what she likes. I’m pointing out that people’s choices of what they wear can be revealing. Like anyone’s choices can be.

It’s disingenuous. The fact is, she’s still extremely popular, influential and is well loved. The UK propaganda didn’t work. There’s nothing else to pick on. Her outfits didn’t cost thousands so they can’t pick on that.
All they have left is the amount of times she changed her clothes.

Love the attempts to take the moral high ground when there’s previously been bitter criticism from Meghan’s supports on MN of what Kate wore to Meghan’s wedding because it was deemed to be attention seeking. Somehow you forgot to be outraged about that?

Of course. She’s a royal woman.

Why wait till then? There’s enough material already to fill a thread on Kate.

I won’t do that though. It’s distasteful and frankly a waste of my time.

And the immediately bringing up what Kate wears - surely that’s not up for discussion by you, since you’d be doing exactly what you’re complaining about?

As it happens, when you look at what Kate has worn to sporting events where she is representing Team GB or one of the Home Nations she has invariably worn:

A team GB polo shirt/tshirt/tracksuit jacket
A blazer in red, white or blue (often these are repeated)
Skinny jeans
A team scarf.
A plain suit in either blue or white

She has more recently worn a neutral houndstooth blazer, and then a red and white one to sports matches, but she’s only recently stated attending winter sports matches.

For Wimbledon there is a dress code in the Royal box, so obviously sportswear from her usual uniform is out, plus she’s not supporting any particular player at Wimbledon obviously. She is almost ridiculously committed to wearing Wimbledon colours or vaguely tennis-themed outfits (bright yellow like the balls, prints with dots on them, “tennis whites” etc).

Pleased to hear Kate is allowed to wear blazers, skinny jeans and various suits. Please allow Meghan that privilege also. Instead of what you linked in your pic.

It‘s really not difficult to counter argue this but honestly I’m not that kind of person. I can’t get so worked up over what other women wear. Not even the tax funded billionaire ones. I don’t own her. It’s none of my business.

Am I policing what Melania Trump’s was wearing when I roll my eyes at her visiting the undocumented children detained at the US border wearing a Zara jacket that had written on the back “I really don’t care, do you?” Or am I criticising her choices?

Clothing choices send messages (the semiotics of fashion is well-recognised field). That’s entirely different to “policing” what someone wears.

The fact is, she’s a fashionista as is Kate.

(She is very considered - possibly too considered - in her clothing choices though).

Unfortunately, her clothes and their cost, more often than not, takes attention away from her causes too.

Anywayyyy well done the participants! Is it the closing ceremony today? Let's hope the Sussexes don't do some faux marching, ott rictus grinning and give a sanctimonious sermon about #beingkind and positive when theyre anything but. Back to the cupboard for H until next time.

I know. I have seen some of her casual clothes. Why should she stuck to that. The RF are like walking wardrobes
