One again, William's neglecting women's football. The Lionesses made history. It is the first time that the English team (male or female) reached the World Cup final since 1966. We all know that if the men had reached the final, he would've been there and probably would've brought George with him.

Queen Letizia and her daughter Sofia will be attending. What's William's excuse? You are président of the Football Association.

This is really disappointing but I'm not really surprised. The young generation of royals are such a joke compared to previous generations. Yes, the Queen’s children had their controversies but when it comes to royal work, they always got the job done.

Prince William will not attend World Cup final to watch Lionesses

Prince William will be watching England's first final since 1966 on the television and will not fly to Australia to see the Lionesses compete, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

This is bigger than this game actually.
Politics is getting more and more involved in sports, whether people want to see it or not.
William, as the Prince of Wales, is not supposed to be political.

He was already in a tricky situation because of the England-Wales issue before the men's WC.

More money from countries with poor human rights are getting more and more involved with football institutions.

William did not travel to Qatar for the WC due to their human rights record.

What if, for example, one WC takes place in Saudi Arabia and England makes it to the final, he will have no choice not to attend due to their politics.
He has to step down

Well that's nonsense because the royals have had to shake hands with some absolute monsters who were heads of state. They've wined and dined them, offered accommodation. The prince who ordered the murder of the journalist in Turkey is coming for a visit

Also there is a major referendum happening in Australia at the moment regarding recognition of the indigenous population and Charles is yet to visit as Head of State so there are wider considerations.

William may also be conscious of the holiday plans of his staff which he might not want to disrupt!

So they have the summer off too. Jesus wept.

Sorry, you are complaining that civil servants are allowed to take their annual leave in summer..?

Which is exactly the same as when the World Cup was in Qatar - he wouldn’t have went to the final there had England got there.

All of them?

Exactly, so he should let someone who doesn't have to worry about public opinion take over

He’s a figurehead. Anyone in that role is going to have to worry about public opinion.

it’s not going to be someone doing a paid job like a second Chief Exec.

"‘They are buying something’: the cash, gifts and arms cementing the Qatari-UK relationship | Qatar | The Guardian" https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2022/nov/17/they-are-buying-something-the-cash-gifts-and-arms-cementing-the-qatari-uk-relationship

The royal family have received many priceless gifts from the middle east. The UK government and us have benefited from Arab largesse.

The British Royals are extremely valise yo sll the ME Royals. Human Rights records don't count when it comes to horse racing or ostentatious gift giving it seems.

What other civil servants get months of annual leave? He already hasn't worked for a whole month over the summer.

Hippyhippybake · 18/08/2023 17:18

How do you know that?

asterdaisy · 18/08/2023 17:19

Court circular.

CwmYoy · 18/08/2023 17:38

Q2C4 · 18/08/2023 11:18

Why the differing levels of hysteria around the Men's game?

Equally daft. Trivial and taking up far too much news space.

Hippyhippybake · 18/08/2023 18:13

The court circular only reports official engagements.

They report 'phone calls as 'meetings' so that's not strictly true
It's an eye opener to read it

Hippyhippybake · 18/08/2023 18:21

Was his stint on the burger van a few weeks back in it? His session selling The Big Issue?

Yes, and there's a lot of talk of a referendum on the monarch in Oz, so for the possible future King of Australia to go there to cheer on England might not go down too well. Especially as England knocked Australia out in the semis.

I'm sure William has taken advice on all this. He's a future Head of State. He can't just show up somewhere without taking several factors into account.

In that case, the FA need a different President.

One who can support England in person at the seriously important matches.

I am very disappointed that he cannot change schedule to go to a women’s World Cup final, when he was perfectly able to make last minute changes so he could watch the men’s semi in Qatar.

I very much deplore both the lack of leadership he is showing, and the misogyny.

queenofarles · 18/08/2023 18:35

He can't go just for the match, that's a horrific carbon footprint. they went to a wedding in Jordan no one mentioned anything about carbon footprint.

Hippyhippybake · 18/08/2023 18:39

@WinnieTheW0rm He didn’t go to Qatar
and was on the record as saying he had no plans to do so.

I guess the reason the actual teams are so happy with his support is that he frequently visits their training sessions (mens and women’s). The teams seem to find this more valuable than him being in a stadium with 80000 people for a match that nobody could be certain England would even be playing.

William did not go to Qatar or the World Cups in 2018 and 2014. A lot of you pretending to be interested in football. The home crowd will be supporting Spain and will be booing England.

Hippyhippybake · 18/08/2023 18:47

Gosh who knew that Aussies can be sore losers?

Attending a foreign royal wedding is diplomatic work.

They've got a lot in common with England😉
