One again, William's neglecting women's football. The Lionesses made history. It is the first time that the English team (male or female) reached the World Cup final since 1966. We all know that if the men had reached the final, he would've been there and probably would've brought George with him.

Queen Letizia and her daughter Sofia will be attending. What's William's excuse? You are président of the Football Association.

This is really disappointing but I'm not really surprised. The young generation of royals are such a joke compared to previous generations. Yes, the Queen’s children had their controversies but when it comes to royal work, they always got the job done.

Prince William will not attend World Cup final to watch Lionesses

Prince William will be watching England's first final since 1966 on the television and will not fly to Australia to see the Lionesses compete, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

He and Charlotte gave a message last year to the lionesses for the euros. It’s not a new thing.

The point is that if the children are to be used, the message that only using Charlotte as opposed to George, Charlotte (and Louis) is that women’s sport is only for women and girls to enjoy. And again puts into stark focus the inherent sexism of the general position women’s sport has been in the UK. (I generally am not a fan of using the children at all - but that’s for another thread)

I do think what is the point of a president of the FA if they don't even attend the final of a World Cup that britain are playing in. It's the major gig as it were. If the president won't attend that then the position may as well not exist.

Agreed. If he's going to be so blatant about what a bullshit low involvement role it is, he should step down and open the position to someone who gives a damn.

Serenster · 21/08/2023 14:43

The posters on this thread are eally amusing me. The overall tone is:

2018 - Prince William as President of the FA flies out to take part in a a vote about future world cup venues - that’s good

2022 - Prince William and Princess Charlotte wish the Lionesses good luck in their Euros final match - that’s good

2022 - Prince William watches the Lionesses win the Euros - that’s good

2023 - Prince William tells the people that after most, the FA and the team, that he won’t be able to make the final if they make it through.

2023 - Prince William and Princess Charlotte wish the Lionesses good luck in their World Cup final match - that’s terrible. He’s using his daughter as a human shield to deflect from bad stories, and he’s sexist for letting his daughter wish the team good luck.

2023 - As he’d previously confirmed, Prince William doesn’t fly to Australia to watch the final - that horrific. He should no longer be president of the FA. He’s clearly sexist and completely uninterested in women’s sport. This will bring the whole monarchy down!

All because one person (a) did what they’ve done previously and (b) did what they told people in advance they would do. If this weer a normal discussion I think there’s a complete lack of perspective, although it’s not really a discussion is it? It’s just an opportunity for a number of posters who are clearly overjoyed to have the opportunity criticise some one as much and as loudly as possible.

(Also, be careful what you wish for. The president of the Spanish FA, who also attended, grabbed his crotch when celebrating victory and then grabbed and forcibly kissed one of the Spanish players, who was not happy about it. But at least he flew out there, right? That’s the most important thing…)

LadyEloise1 · 21/08/2023 14:44

@SunRainStorm writes ".....he should step down and open the position to someone who gives a damn."

I fully agree.

asterdaisy · 21/08/2023 14:47

@Serenster simply telling people you are not going to do your job does not then make it okay when you don't do your job.

Novella4 · 21/08/2023 14:49

@Serenster

That post looked like it took a lot of work!

This is issue is 1-nil to the republicans , so relax . Windsor PLC is stuffed on this one .

And surely Kate’s ‘Early Years ‘ folder has something to say about using the second born as a human PR shield ?

Roussette · 21/08/2023 14:53

2023 - Prince William tells the people that after most, the FA and the team, that he won’t be able to make the final if they make it through.

Not good!

@Serenster simply telling people you are not going to do your job does not then make it okay when you don't do your job.

In the real world, if you have performed your job without issue for 17 years, and you then give advance notice that there is one potential obligation you won’t be able to make, it is not a problem.

Roussette · 21/08/2023 14:55

I hope you're not even remotely suggesting William would behave like this 🤣😂

Just because someone is a President of a FA in their country doesn't mean they have those sort of tendencies!

Serenster · 21/08/2023 14:55

That post looked like it took a lot of work!

Not at all! I think and type fast. 😀 But I’ll take that as a compliment

Serenster · 21/08/2023 14:56

I hope you're not even remotely suggesting William would behave like this 🤣😂

No, it was the reverse really - despite how little you think of him, I think most people would think there’s very little chance William would ever do that!

So we don't have to be careful what we wish for!

Course he wouldn't!

I wonder what his thoughts are on his absence now? I'd love to know. Is he thinking.. I don't care, or... shit, what an own goal, or... I should've realised and gone.
We'll never know of course.

asterdaisy · 21/08/2023 15:01

@Serenster William has not done his job for 17 years without ant issues. Have you really forgotten the disastrous colonial tour?
And for years he has had a low number of engagements because it is said he wants to spend time with his young family.
He is going to balmoral for his annual extended family get together. That is why he did not go to the match as president of the FA.

Serenster · 21/08/2023 15:12

@Serenster William has not done his job for 17 years without ant issues. Have you really forgotten the disastrous colonial tour?

The whole conversation has been about William’s role as President of the FA. He’s been President there for 17 years - that’s the “job” I was saying he’s performed without previous issues.

asterdaisy · 21/08/2023 15:20

I am interested to know what work he has done for this job over the 17 years? Is it a couple of engagements every year?

AliceOlive · 21/08/2023 15:25

@Serenster I don't see a problem with someone choosing to put their family first when their entire life in the end will have been spent in some form of public service. Do you agree?

Like his Grandmother and now his father, he's likely to work many, many years past retirement age. QE is criticized for not spending enough time with her young children.

I see the comments about how they have nannies, money etc, to be purely coming from a place of envy for anyone in different circumstances. I would not trade places with any member of the RF, therefore am not here to judge their productivity based on my own limited info.

FA seems to be about much more than attending football games. They have an informative website.

asterdaisy · 21/08/2023 15:28

QE went for months on foreign tours where she did not see her children. No one wants Kate or William to do that.
No one thinks William needs to work very few hours a week just because he has a young family though.
There is a middle road.

AliceOlive · 21/08/2023 15:30

I don't believe his only work involves public facing engagements or things I know about.

Roussette · 21/08/2023 15:32

I so agree. Surely one parent at home with the children is enough? Or in K&W's case, both doing a bit of work which equals one working parent. But that means more for both of them and I don't think they fancy that idea.

skullbabe · 21/08/2023 15:38

2023 - Prince William tells the people that after most, the FA and the team, that he won’t be able to make the final if they make it through.

This a failing on the part of the President of the English FA. He should have been there - it’s as simple as.

2023 - Prince William and Princess Charlotte wish the Lionesses good luck in their World Cup final match - that’s terrible. He’s using his daughter as a human shield to deflect from bad stories, and he’s sexist for letting his daughter wish the team good luck.

This really upsets me because this absolutely misrepresents what many people have said. I am aware of the people saying that he’s used Charlotte as a shield (I don’t agree wit this framing) but it is bad form if he is going to use a child to use Charlotte alone. Because it sends the message that women’s sports are only for women. I think he shouldn’t have used Charlotte in the last year but that ship has sailed.

2023 - As he’d previously confirmed, Prince William doesn’t fly to Australia to watch the final - that horrific. He should no longer be president of the FA. He’s clearly sexist and completely uninterested in women’s sport. This will bring the whole monarchy down!

Yes - the President of the English FA didn’t think about the women’s World Cup when planning his yearly calendar and in his role as an ambassador for both the men and women, has shown that women are not even given the benefit of consideration. I think that is the reason that many people are upset with the President of the English FA. The President has done great work with the women’s team and it’s obvious that the players hold him in high regard. The problem is that the President is also the Prince of Wales - and the issue is that for whatever reason the POW was unable to attend to his job in the FA. The players cannot criticise the President because he is also the POW and that would open up a whole can of worms that they are wise to avoid. This is what the issue is - I don’t think it will bring the monarchy down but certainly has refreshed many a mind as to his work shy reputation. And no matter which way you slice it - there has been reputational damage. I have no doubt he will be fine - but he will need to work especially hard to get back to the equilibrium he has had over the past couple of years.

Full points for effort you forgot though to add he as yet to provide a valid reason why he didn't go / diary it as something he should have gone to. His last engagement was July 17th. Pitiful workload

asterdaisy · 21/08/2023 16:37

I read a newspaper article that this flight would have been 1% of the carbon emissions for the royal families annual flights,
If William cares so much about carbon emissions maybe he should use trains and cars as queen Eliza did, rather than helicopter to travel around Britain.

Serenster · 21/08/2023 16:41

As many of us keep repeating on this thread - his last public engagement was 17 July. You can’t say what he’s been doing since - none of us can. You are assuming he’s been lying on a sun lounger ever since because that fits the image you have of him.

what an incredibly condescending post, and very insensitive and offensive to try and imply that anyone here would excuse or condone sexual assault for the sake of argument. Especially after you've been on threads where a number of women here, myself included, have spoken about past sexual harassment and assault. If that is true he did that, it is awful, but it has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation and it is not right of you to use what happened to her for your own agenda here.
