Kate and Williams children overexposed

It is sad to see the children appearing more and more at public events. Yesterday George and Charlotte appeared at wilmbledon and Charlotte gave a player an official coin. Today the children are all over the press.

A few days ago they appeared at the Royal international Air tattoo.
There has been criticism before on the board at the number of appearances thr children make in public. This was said to be temporary due to the death of Elizabeth and Charles as the new king, but it quite clearly is not true.

The children are being increasingly taken to events where William and Kate are working, to help boost the popularity of the Royal family. The children gain nothing from it. I am sure they would have enjoyed the air tattoo far more without a crowd of photographers taking lots of photos of the children.

It's sad to see the children used in this way. So much for giving them a normal childhood.

I agree too

I agree with what Samcro said.

@Inkanta - nobody is forcing you to look at her.

Nono22972 · 17/07/2023 16:38

So what's your solution? Keeping them away from the media until they're 18. That's exactly what the late Queen did with her 2 youngest children and Andrew, apparently, had trouble getting used to the media attention.

At this point, no matter what K&W do, they'll never win with some people but it's interesting to see the mental gymnastics. George, Charlotte and Louis are probably the royal children with the most privacy in all of Europe. We see them less than 10 times a year. We have seen them 5 times in the past 7 months.

For years, the then Cambridges were criticised for not being like other European monarchies and hiding their children too much, Princess Ingrid started doing solo engagements around the same age George is now. Princess Leonor has been accompanying her parents on engagements regularly since she was a young girl and has been giving speeches since she was 13,...

Also I've noticed that some of the biggest critics are the same people praising Diana for being a good mother when, in fact, both Harry and William were the ones being overexposed.

I think W&K are doing a good job of slowly introducing their children to royal life. At the end of the day, they are not normal children. George is the future King of the UK and Charlotte and Louis will most likely become working royals someday.

I also agree @Samcro - i think nuanced conversations about this are difficult because many people are bringing other issues into it. My personal discomfort is with the children being put on display though I note that it's a tight balancing act - I think the Wales' are doing a pretty good job of keeping them as much out of the limelight as possible by bringing them to big events and only releasing pictures on milestones. I think my issue is with the way that people/the public already seem to have created some sort of ownership of them and again the way that people (there was one on this thread) are giving these children predetermined roles to play which is not at all fair on them. I think that so long as people push against that type of characterisation and the palace keep their visibility to this even medium they have they should be alright.

It was my knee jerk reaction to think they should keep them away and for me, the way that people have started already giving each child a role to play has made me uncomfortable. But - you're right - they will never be out of the spotlight because of who they are and the Wales' are doing a good job with not allowing a free for all when it comes to them.

The children clearly had an amazing time. And if all they cared about was PR, they would've brought Louis as well

I’d give my left leg for a Wimbledon ticket in the royal box… but they’re Kate’s kids so we must convince ourselves they’re being tortured 😂

Last year George got to chat with Djokovic after his victory and even got to hold the trophy himself. I imagine little boys hate that sort of thing and need to be protected from it.

I know there's another 3 years to go-(4 years? How old is he exactly?) but George looks like a child entirely unsuited to Eton.

So where should he go to school? How on earth do you know whether he’s suited to Eton or not from photos in the paper and tv appearances?
Unless you just want to turn yet another thread into a state school versus private school argument.

Yes, it's like an institutional version of influencers monetising their offspring on Instagram. Actually, those mildly sinister photos of the Cambridges frolicking in nice knitwear are pretty Insta-grade in themselves.

But with the backing of a mystifyingly sizeable proportion of their 'subjects', who appear to either feel that British democracy couldn't cope with electing a ceremonial HoS periodically (if I had a pound for every time someone remarks, with an air of great sagacity on these threads 'Better the RF than President Johnson or Trump!') or actually enjoy forelocking tugging, waving little flags on the Mall for royal occasions, and the more primitive pleasures of 'Did William shag a Norfolk neighbour?' 'What's with the endless coatdresses?' and the Harry and Meghan circus.

If you're a monarchist, this is what you're supporting. Along with the idea of a bloodline fitting someone to rule, regardless of whether they're a dutiful nonentity, a Nazi sympathiser or someone who hung out with underage girl traffickers. Because it's only an accident of birth that Andrew rather than Charles is on the throne.

🥱

Of course they did. I would too, as would dc

stayathomer · 17/07/2023 17:18

George was there last year and looked bored, I thought they looked like they were loving it! I do always say about Harry’s documentary where they’re on holiday and w and h are really young and there’s about ten photographers on the beach taking photos of them on their yacht watching dolphins. It was so sad- they’re having this magical moment and then the camera zooms to all these strangers watching it. I hope George and Charlotte get normal time at home and school

That was decades ago. You won't see pictures of the Wales children on holiday, certainly not in any British publication.

smilesy · 17/07/2023 17:20

Well as we never see photos of them at home or at school, presumably they do 🤷‍♀️

Choux · 17/07/2023 17:26

30rockpage · 17/07/2023 14:38

And William was not expected to work as a child like Charlotte has presenting a ceremonial coin. She is eight!

There's lots of photos of William doing "Royal work" as a child.

Wasn't Charlotte being shown the coin which would determine who would serve first by one of the ball boys? I don't think she presented it - the ball boy dropped it then picked it up and gave it to her. Then she and George looked at it and gave it back to the ball boy. If she looked solemn it's because she was taking care of it and listening to what Kate was saying about how it would be used.

Dinopawus · 17/07/2023 17:30

The great british public (well the tabloids) demanded that the late Queen return to London when Diana died instead of staying with her Grandson's in Balmoral. I'm not sure the public are the best judge tbh.

upinaballoon · 17/07/2023 17:46

OP, I don't believe that you think it's sad at all. It's grist to your mill. Are you old enough to remember when Diana took the boys to Alton Towers or to meet homeless people? Was she over-exposing her children to make herself look like a loving mother and messing their lives up in the process?

Yes, I also bet he was also really bored and anxious when he got to go to Wembley to watch England play in Euro 2020. I really hope he didn’t have to meet all the players afterwards, imagine how terrible that would have been for the poor little soul? Just awful really 😥

SleepingStandingUp · 17/07/2023 17:47

What would you do op? not have had kids to try to disrail the whole thing? lock them away until their 18 so the fervour to see them grows? wheel them put once a year and have them scared every time because its so new and intense?

You should have a word with yourself for staring at photos of a child and writing things like this online. Or are you are trying to show exactly the reason the children need to be protected from the public?

CurlewKate · 17/07/2023 17:56

@AliceOlive Eh? What on earth do you mean?

you have no idea from a few photos and video clips anything about him, how academic he is, how he'll adjust to boarding school, how well he'll make friends etc.

Ohpleeeease · 17/07/2023 17:57

Quite right @Samcro. They’ll make mistakes, because they’re human, and fallible, like all of us.
