Honours of Scotland

I have to go out so am recording the service but does anyone want to talk about the service today in Edinburgh?

I think it's amazing the Honours of Scotland have survived to the present day. I also like hearing the traditional words because they have so much history within them. I remember listening to the Proclamation and being struck that Charles promised to keep the Church of Scotland independent.

Anyway I find it all fascinating, weird sometimes but fascinating. The Rest is History did a series of programmes on Coronations which are well worth a listen.

I'm also glad that the Not My King protests haven't been removed this time.

I also have to go out, and will try to catch up on I Player. Presumably the late Queen did all of this, too. I didn't know anything about The Honours of Scotland. I am thinking that this ceremony started around about 1605 or so, but I might be way off beam and will find out differently in due course.

I was watching the news this morning before work. I didn't realise the crown is the same one used when Mary, Queen of Scots became Queen in the 1500s. That blows my mind! Absolutely amazing. Hope everything goes well.

MrsLeonFarrell · 05/07/2023 13:22

Yes apparently the Queen did the same ceremony in 1953 but I've never seen anything about it. I did see a documentary fairly recently that mentioned how the honours survived but I can't remember the details. Basically they took them far north!

I'll have to catch up properly later.

But to begin on a shallow note, I loved Camilla's hat at the soggy garden party. And I'm wondering if Lt Col Johnny will be much in evidence

Onprozacandmyhighhorse · 05/07/2023 13:25

Did you see Major Johnny introducing Humza Yousef yesterday. Dear Lord, what a man! (Not Humza in case you're wondering)

jeffgoldblum · 05/07/2023 13:25

Very interested in a thread discussing this , yes! Thanks @MrsLeonFarrell

It's staggering isn't it. I wonder if he puts it on or just touches it.

Getting on to enjoy a bit of historical chitchat and some nice frocks.

And an even bigger fuck-off sword, apparently.

It was a fabulous hat, I'm so jealous I'd love to be able to wear hats.

I missed that! Pretty sure him and his kilt will be to the fore today.

Not sure, saw a brief clip of the queen, it was black and white, not very clear but seemed to show her touching it?

I'll be offline shortly as need to sort out my dad but I'll be back. It's the little historical details and trivia that I love.

Maybe because it is so old they can't risk damage by getting it to fit?

I like the idea of a People's Procession. I hope everyone involved has a lovely time (and access to the loo)

Sword to be borne by Dame Katherine Grainger – Olympic rowing champion.

They thought this one through...

It's Former Olympic rowing champion Dame Katherine Grainger

This sword is called the Queen Elizabeth Sword - how did a Scottish Honour get that name?

PerkingFaintly · 05/07/2023 13:37

Elizabeth Sword is brand new. Commissioned last year.

It’s a new sword, I think

A quick Google said it was commissioned in 2022 and named after the Queen. I think it replaced a previous sword.

They definitely did!

Ah they've just said why. The old sword is too fragile to be moved from Edinburgh Castle.
