Harry and Meghan slammed by Spotify executive after podcast deal ends | The Independent

The old thread got closed, just as I was trying to quote tweet someone! So I've started this one, because this shitshow is still rumbling on

Spotify executive hits out at Harry and Meghan after podcast deal ends

Sussexes inked three-year $25m deal with audio company but produced just one series of content

Hadley Freeman writes so well.

I used to really, really like Meghan. We had a tea party to watch their wedding, I loved the wedding itself and thought Meghan made Harry happy. But what they seem to have done, is to make each other less happy, not more!

I think that they both were not transparent with each other about their core values and ambitions.

They both had IMHO diametrically opposed goals - but pretended to each other.

MM has spent her life ruthlessly hustling to gain fame and fortune. That's not a criticism and she has done well.

PH had inclinations to move in the opposite direction. And there is no criticism here either - just compassion.

But their goals and worlds collided because ironically they were not truthful to each other either implicitly or explicitly about their values, expectations and emotional capacities in that they are fundamentally incompatible.

Thank you!

My posts have been reinstated now. I think there were temporarily hidden because there's an automatic MNHQ checking procedure to rule out any dodgy links to unpleasant articles and websites (and very wise of them, too).

Gracewithoutend · 02/07/2023 15:06

Hey, @AutumnCrow , thats a brilliant tip. It worked for me. Thanks.

Maireas · 02/07/2023 15:44

That sounds very similar to Sir Trevor Phillips article a few days ago. He put it quite strongly.

To be perfectly frank I'd never heard of her before, but cue the demonising in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

Rolling Stone appear to have been reading this thread 😆

It feels like the ship might have sailed on the Sussexes achieving that Oprah-style, Michelle Obama-status they seem to covet, because these women have become icons through using their voices sparingly over the years. A “less is more” approach has allowed them to cut through the noise when it really counts. If Harry and Meghan want to become icons through being overexposed (as they are currently) then they need to channel their inner Kardashian and give us something new. Because right now, apart from familial beef that is past its sell-by-date, it doesn’t seem like they have much else to offer.

She fairly recently came on to MN for a long webchat/AMA, about her new book on anorexia, and answered a load of questions very openly and intelligently, I thought.

She also talked a bit about leaving the Guardian for the Sunday Times. She's on MN; and she doesn't believe in the gender woo religion which seems to have precipitated her departure from the Guardian (although she was diplomatic about that). She has been on the end of some pretty crappy behaviour.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/07/2023 17:04

Thanks for the background, AutumnCrow - I learn something new on here every day Smile

AutumnCrow · 02/07/2023 17:06

Lots of journalists lurk on MN. Some are quite open about it; others, like Sarah Vine, seem to use ideas and discussions from threads to form the scaffolding of their articles, but obviously I can't be sure - it's just an amateur deduction.

ThePoshUns · 02/07/2023 17:21

Hadley Freeman is a fabulous writer. Her book ' House of Glass' about her Jewish ancestry is a great read.

ThePoshUns · 02/07/2023 17:30

I digress but it does seem the Sussex brand has run out of steam and it isn't clear where they go next.

Qbish · 02/07/2023 17:39

I think that part of the problem for them is that around the time of the Oprah interview they were kind of holy, nobody really wrote anything bad about them, everything they said was believed.

But now, after the TV series and the book, notes can be compared and all PH says is clearly not the truth. Sometimes it's not even his truth, it's just wrong. And then Meghan having to admit to the court that she'd colluded in Finding Freedom...

And then the lack of delivery on the $$$ deals.

It has all added up, and now the gloves are off. Which leaves people asking what they are actually for now, how is their stance of "global this that and the other" actually backed up?

I loved Hadley Freeman's columns in the Guardian. A very thoughtful writer.

tigger2022 · 02/07/2023 20:20

I just finished reading her latest book she’s a brilliant writer

Milcar · 02/07/2023 20:34

She is! Though not enough to take out a subscription the The Times. Which maybe casts light on those who claim there is a straightforward relationship between ownership and editorial policy. If you don't follow your readers views you don't last long.

Wheresthebeach · 03/07/2023 11:41

H&M have clearly run out of road with the good will they garnered when they ran away from the RF. It's odd...because every once in a while something hits the press and I think 'oh good' I hope they come up with something worthwhile. Then I read the nonsense she spouts, and the vile stuff he says about his family and wonder why I keep hoping for them to redeem themselves.

I think my main problem is the super wealthy complaining about money which seriously gets my goat, acting as if getting help for M mental health was outside of their ability, and both trashing their family, yet trying to live off the family name.

costacoughee · 06/07/2023 20:05

The couple made a huge error of judgement in their Oprah interview. The initial reaction to their accusations of racism and suicidal thoughts was positive enough to embolden them to further in the Netflix series.

The Americans lapped up their victimhood status but as the attacks on family became more specific and the RF didn't respond but were sitting targets they became less and less convinced.

The huge error of judgement is that many Americans have a natural suspicion of royalty (they fought a war to get rid of them after all) but they have an even bigger respect for family and family loyalty and H&M showed utter disrespect for their families. Nasty taste in the mouth for sure.

Milcar · 08/07/2023 18:13

I'm not sure it is a 'natural suspicion of monarchy' so much as the story just didn't add up. Suicidal, and Harry has a therapist's number, but they went to HR? Really?

AliceOlive · 08/07/2023 18:34

I don’t think that assessment of “The Americans” has any real accuracy.

Milcar · 08/07/2023 19:06

@AliceOlive no doubt! Let's face it, millions of people will not all think alike. But it has become a short hand for 'open minded, and not in thrall to the monarchy' vs 'small minded and racist' on these threads!

costacoughee · 08/07/2023 19:24

AliceOlive · 08/07/2023 18:34

My impression is that they really lapped up the harry and Meghan love story and their escape to the land of freedom from the hideous BRF? Do you mean people actually saw through the BS from early on??

costacoughee · 08/07/2023 19:30

The OW interview was specifically designed to appeal to Americans, playing into the anti imperialist sentiment. I still think they were very popular in America until relatively recently. There were definitely people prepared to speak out against them but they were sacked or silenced. Now the floodgates have opened and people are not intimidated any longer.

AliceOlive · 08/07/2023 19:47

No, that’s way off and terribly insulting. Lapped up? Intimidated? What on earth?!

There are people who like them, those who are critical and plenty who barely know of either of them. And everything in between.

There are also 336M of us. We aren’t a hive mind.

The Queen has also always had the respect of many Americans.
