"They don't just report the news, they create it": on Meghan, Harry and the Press

MrsMaxDeWinter · 21/06/2023 06:57

The much trumpeted story of the Dior deal is such a classic tabloid creation, isn't it.

I enjoyed this Grazia article that lays bare the utter nuttiness.

First the tabloids report the rumours as though they are true.

"Meghan to sign with Dior!"

No sources, just speculation based on Meghan and Harry wearing clothes by Dior a handful of times.

Then when both the Sussexes and Dior report that the rumours are not true, (Dior spokesperson said they are "nonplussed" about where the rumours came from) they spin it into "Meghan Rebuffed by Dior!"

This has also happened with Meghan's much rumoured run for the presidency: Robert Jobson actually wrote, with a straight face, in his book published in April 2023, that she was absolutely, certainly and most definitely going to run for president in 2024.

I mean any critical person would realise that the timelines don't make sense, she would have needed a fundraising Super PAC by the time the book was published, and in any event, Democrats don't normally challenge a sitting president ... but hey ho, Meghan is running for president in 2024 because a "Royal Correspondent" said so (and they are so knowledgeable about the American presidency) and a tabloid published it.

And it's the same with The Tig. She is going to launch it any day now. She wants to rival Gwyneth Paltrow! Story after story, based on nothing but speculation.

Rumour after rumour, speculation published as "news" to create media stories about a woman whose plans are not known to the tabloids because she and her husband made it crystal clear even when they were in the UK that they don't engage with the tabloid press.

And there are no "palace sources" who can speak with any kind of plausibility about the Sussexes, so the tabloids make it up as they go along, whipping up headline after headline, driving their readers into a frenzy over things they create ...

While ignoring the important news, like the damning questions by the judge in the Mirror Group case, who asked why the journalists, among them Piers Morgan, have not come to court to testify in the phone hacking trial ...

Oh no, that's not as important to report on as Meghan's fictitious Dior deal, completely implausible rumours of her presidential ambitions, and the speculated upon plans to best Gwyneth Paltrow!

Could I please ask posters not to derail the thread?

Thank you.

We seem to have derailing again.

ItsOnlyMeNow · 25/06/2023 11:16

It does happen though on every single MN thread.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 25/06/2023 11:22

I haven't seen that, but will look it up, sounds like us!

Sorry that message was for @Roussette

!!!

You would not like what DH does, I promise you!
(Is this derailing? I thought it was just all of us showing a human side)

MrsMaxDeWinter · 25/06/2023 11:31

Reminds me of a Meghan thread I was on that turned into a Dolly Parton lovefest 😆You were on it too as I recall @Roussette

It's less a derailing than a detour @ItsOnlyMeNow. It started with a discussion on Maria Carey's Archetypes episode, segued into black hair memories that the episode awoke in some posters, then into opera voices ...

Our eye is till very much on the topic, have no fear!

Blush Blush

I started the Dolly love fest if I recall correctly 🤣

MrsMaxDeWinter · 25/06/2023 11:33

Indeed you did!

It is weird though as it seems to be OK when certain people deem it to be showing their human side. Gets others who are told to stay on subject wondering why maybe. I will remember that though - "it's not a derail it's a detour". 😂

Oh please don't. You know EXACTLY what a derail is and it ain't talking about people with nice voices!

It's PAs against other posters, bringing in deliberately provocative stuff to goad other posters into reacting and then getting deleted. Then too many deletions taking up the Mods time, and poof thread gone

Us having a smile about people we've known with nice voices is not trying to get the thread deleted!
Surely you like a smile and a bonding moment with other posters? It's nice!

MrsMaxDeWinter · 25/06/2023 12:03

Derailing is when people goad other posters and go off topic with the aim of getting the thread deleted.

People being friendly to each other and bonding over their hair experiences or liking beautiful voices is not goading or trying to get the thread deleted.

We could do with more niceness on these threads.

Its almost as if context and content matters 🤔- go figure.

it was a lovely, and at times very funny, sharing of personal stories of childhood, partners and family. I enjoyed reading them.

Samcro · 25/06/2023 12:42

now thats a derail. its taken me a while to get it, but thank you for that example as at last I do.
(((old lady emotion)))

Iwantcakeeveryday · 25/06/2023 12:51

I suggest we take the advice of MNHQ several times now, and not engage in any attempts to goad or create arguments here.

Roussette · 25/06/2023 12:54

Sadly I don't think that this would be possible on a thread of this topic
Well... I've managed it even with some posters who think directly opposite to me.
I am more than this, and we're all human.

As for the latter part of your post, I have been trolled, attempted doxxing, insulted, called every name under the sun, accused of being a paid shill, ridiculed, endless deleted PAs, and far far more. As have others.

For me, if there's an opportunity to show a human side, I will. My feelings about H&M don't stop me treating people decently.
I didn't say to be nice, I said it was nice to connect with others whatever the view is. Sorry you don't feel like that

And it also helped that Meghan has a beautiful speaking voice. She could read the yellow pages and I would listen

Agree. I had a boyfriend once before Mr.Rou and he had the most wonderful speaking voice imaginable. I stayed with him far too long, just because of his voice 😂

😊

Howsimplywonderful · 25/06/2023 13:24

I listened to a car ad and the person had a lovely voice (like Meghan’s). I thought that was the type of work she could do but not sure if it pays very well.

There is also a market for wonderful audio narrators, some of them have their own fans who will buy what they narrate . But then again I’m not sure how well it pays.

Morestrangerthings · 26/06/2023 12:01

Came across this on Twitter. Apparent Hugh Grant has asked people to pass it on.

It’s about one of the media owners Harry, Hugh and others intend to sue. Murdoch (short history of)

Morestrangerthings · 26/06/2023 12:05

Forgot to add this media mogul, Murdoch - owner of The Sun - owned NOTW.

A poster on a RF thread accused me of being a conspiracist who needs to give Murdoch ‘a break.’ lol.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 26/06/2023 12:08

Thanks @Morestrangerthings I took a quick peek at that the other day so thanks for adding it here. Looking at the history of The Sun is pretty awful, you could say the same for other publications he owns. I find it strange their lawyers are always saying, it's a very different organisation today blah blah no, the same man and same family own these outlets, Rupert was the owner when they published that disgusting offer to give gay people a one way ticket out of the UK, he's still there today. Gross horrible man.

Morestrangerthings · 26/06/2023 12:11

Yes, he is a gross horrible man who is doing his best to ruin our countries. For money and power.

Morestrangerthings · 26/06/2023 12:24

His own mother felt shame at Rupert Murdoch’s business methods.

Dame Elisabeth not only disapproved, but expressed shame at the methods her only son had employed in making himself an international pariah

I remember when Dame Murdoch’s opinion of her son was first reported. There is no doubt she loved him, but according to this, she also knew him.

Dame Elisabeth Murdoch's shame

Former senior News Ltd executive Rodney E. Lever says the funeral of Dame Elisabeth Murdoch has highlighted the dysfunctional nature of Rupert Murdoch’s family.

Thanks for that. Reminder of Murdoch deeds. How he is not rotting in jail is beyond me. If the dictionary had a picture for greedy scum of the earth, it would probably be a picture of him.

Didn't he have several meetings with BoJo and George Osbourne.

A very entitled man who knows he has been getting away with murder for years.
