"They don't just report the news, they create it": on Meghan, Harry and the Press

The much trumpeted story of the Dior deal is such a classic tabloid creation, isn't it.

I enjoyed this Grazia article that lays bare the utter nuttiness.

First the tabloids report the rumours as though they are true.

"Meghan to sign with Dior!"

No sources, just speculation based on Meghan and Harry wearing clothes by Dior a handful of times.

Then when both the Sussexes and Dior report that the rumours are not true, (Dior spokesperson said they are "nonplussed" about where the rumours came from) they spin it into "Meghan Rebuffed by Dior!"

This has also happened with Meghan's much rumoured run for the presidency: Robert Jobson actually wrote, with a straight face, in his book published in April 2023, that she was absolutely, certainly and most definitely going to run for president in 2024.

I mean any critical person would realise that the timelines don't make sense, she would have needed a fundraising Super PAC by the time the book was published, and in any event, Democrats don't normally challenge a sitting president ... but hey ho, Meghan is running for president in 2024 because a "Royal Correspondent" said so (and they are so knowledgeable about the American presidency) and a tabloid published it.

And it's the same with The Tig. She is going to launch it any day now. She wants to rival Gwyneth Paltrow! Story after story, based on nothing but speculation.

Rumour after rumour, speculation published as "news" to create media stories about a woman whose plans are not known to the tabloids because she and her husband made it crystal clear even when they were in the UK that they don't engage with the tabloid press.

And there are no "palace sources" who can speak with any kind of plausibility about the Sussexes, so the tabloids make it up as they go along, whipping up headline after headline, driving their readers into a frenzy over things they create ...

While ignoring the important news, like the damning questions by the judge in the Mirror Group case, who asked why the journalists, among them Piers Morgan, have not come to court to testify in the phone hacking trial ...

Oh no, that's not as important to report on as Meghan's fictitious Dior deal, completely implausible rumours of her presidential ambitions, and the speculated upon plans to best Gwyneth Paltrow!

Who would know? It was an expression of my opinion, not asserted as a fact, and not referring to any individuals at all.

Absolutely fine for the people who reported it to refer to posters they disagree with as being racist, of course.🙄

From memory if you report the deleted post yourself you can ask in the comment box and they sometimes reply, I did it once myself, didn't much like the reply though! 🤣

I can live without the edification. 🤣 Honestly, overall I think the fact it was reported tends to demonstrate the accuracy of my opinion!

Which commission, he’s been on loads? He was head of the commission for racial equality then chairman of the EHRC? He was on the commission for the Runnymede Trust which literally defined islamophobia? Most recently he stood up for us during the rise of antisemitism. This is his area of expertise, his life’s work?

@tigger2022 , yes I read about him and his early life , he's done quite a lot of impressive work, I was amazed I'd not heard of him before.

He is such a good speaker, he came to my university years ago. And was brilliant during the antisemitism crisis. He is also practically minded and his focus has always been on community cohesion and bridge building. Not popular these days!

Well yeah he’s an expert. Most people on social media are not massively well informed and just react based on whether they like MM or not. Out in the real world of people actually making progress, he is enormously well regarded by his peers.

And who are his 'peers'?

Sorry have to leave this discussion now. Trevor Phillips has made an incredible contribution to communities in this country including my own. Seeing him be reduced to stereotypes and racial slurs is too much.

I agree with you that was really horrible. And it doesn't even make sense in a British context. I don't agree with what he said, and I know he's made some pretty inflammatory remarks about Muslims in the past too so I'm a bit sceptical of him I suppose, in some respects. But black people are (obviously) not a monolith and he's entitled to express his views (again, obviously!) He's just a bit pro-establishment for my tastes.

I think W is a bit optimistic about this but I would say his role as future King certainly gives him more of a spotlight than H and M who seem to be living in a very negative spotlight.

I am not so sure about this - aparently she is worth quite a few million to brands that she is papped in - in contrast to say M. Obama who generates about $500,000. The jacket she wore on the day of the corronation sold out in America - that is a hell of a lot of jackets! This is from an article in the Times at the begining of the Dior story.

The negative spotlight is sustained here but I am not at all convinced they are universally hated.

But, the uncle and aunt terms for these individuals, I surely read and heard from the black community itself.

Excuse me but that is not necessary. You are entitled to your own opinion about him, but not to make this rude statement about the poc on this thread who have a different opinion of him to you. He is not well regarded by any BAME people I know. Plenty of people have a problem with the way he talks about race issues in this country and I think its really off for someone who is not a poc to come and make this kind of statement about people here who are.
