I never really agreed with Archetypes from a feminist perspective: firstly, why talk to Serena Williams, other than the fact they’re friends? Some horrible stuff has been broadcast about Venus and Serena but Serena is one of the greatest tennis players of all time. In what material way have stereotypes held her back? She has won as many Grand Slams as Djokovic and more than Federer/Nadal. There are female players who have been held back by negative sexist coverage - Naomi Osaka? Maria Sharapova? And secondly - the idea that sexist stereotypes are somehow learned by accident and we just need someone to helpfully point out they don’t apply to everyone and might not apply to us, women will suddenly go “Oh!” and reach our full potential. Stereotypes are not accidental, they’re not labels for who society would like us to be, they’re what the patriarchy spends our entire life trying to engineer us to be: through shame, violence, and control. It would have been interesting if Meghan had asked Serena what impact the racism and sexism levelled against her throughout her career might have had on young, black sportswomen and whether it has made the next Serena Williams less likely. I thought it was a fundamental flaw, talking exclusively to women who have already overcome the stereotypes.
