I'm no fashionista but I love scrutinizing how these brides deck themselves out for such a huge event. Me? I'd look like a hippo in a frock.

I'll start- my favourite is Princess Mary of Denmark. She looked like a dream.

I thought that Diana's dress was bang on trend - New Romantics and all that.

But I remember thinking at the time that Charles had got a gift wrapped virgin, whereas Sarah Ferguson looked more like a real woman (IYSWIM, not implying that Diana was made of polyester!)

upinaballoon · 01/06/2023 10:54

I have always thought that Sarah Ferguson looked voluptuous in her wedding dress. She was more curvy than Diana. That doesn't mean that I thought Diana was curve-less.

Ohpleeeease · 01/06/2023 11:20

I actually liked Diana’s at the time - I thought it had drama and it’s certainly memorable, you couldn’t mistake it for anyone else’s. I didn’t even mind the creases, which all smoothed out once the dress was arranged properly. You couldn’t see from the photographs but it was covered with beads that twinkled under the Cathedral lights. She positively sparkled. IMHO her hair let her down, it looked very flat and even the glorious Spencer tiara couldn’t lift it.

I particularly loved Sarah Chatto’s wedding dress. Also Serena Armstrong Jones and Zara Philips gowns. Kate’s gown was stunning. I remember watching Charles and Diana’s wedding and thinking her dress was beautiful.

Lottapianos · 01/06/2023 11:28

'Also Serena Armstrong Jones'

Had forgotten this one! OMG, stunning 🥰

I always thought that both Kate's and Meghan's reception dresses were what they might have chosen as wedding dresses had they not married a prince.

Eugenie's dress was lovely at the back but less so at the front. I disliked her reception dress. Beatrice could have done with her dress being slightly longer, I wondered whether she'd ended up in different height shoes to what she'd worn for fittings. Zara's dress has a weird thing a the bottom but was otherwise nice.

For other brides, I think my favourites are Sarah Chatto, Maxima of Netherlands, and Mary of Denmark.

And then for just fabulously insane, I think you can't beat Mabel's bows

Yesterdays wedding reports of the crown prince of Jordan showed a gorgeous bride and Catherine also looked gorgeous. Preferred her less formal dress here

Think that's her brother (?) walking with the bride. It's not her husband.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 02/06/2023 09:26

My personal favourite was Princess Eugenie, so elegant. Closely followed by Princess Beatrice and the beautifully recycled dress loaned by the Queen.

For the two members of the RF who are most ridiculed for their fashion choices they really came up trumps for their weddings.

MissTrip82 · 02/06/2023 12:33

I’ve liked them all. I love a big wedding dress. I wouldn’t (and didn’t) wear one myself but even Diana’s I like as a product of the time and the situation. I think Meghan looked amazing too. I find it really odd when home sewers lecture people about what world class designers got wrong.

I really didn't like the bust area on Kate's dress, looked pointy and a bit Madonna like.

Yes, I can't see anything else when I look at either her wedding dress or the evening dress on her wedding day. Like miniature, hard weapons poking out.

'Weapons-grade Strong boobs' one week, 'weak boobs' the next. How does Kate do it?

Hohohogreenjennie · 02/06/2023 20:01

Just digging through the archives and I also love Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon’s’ dress from 1923. She didn’t wear a tiara. Her veil was secured by a ‘chaplet of leaves’.

Sarah Chatto’s wedding dress was my favourite
I actually copied the style of her dress when I got married.
Grace Kelly’s dress was beautiful
I also liked Princess Beatrice’s dress

Hohohogreenjennie · 02/06/2023 20:07

I was also shocked to discover that Wallis Simpson didn’t get married in white (like the black and white photos imply) but that her dress was actually blue, specifically ‘Wallis blue’. Not keen on the hat but her dress was fabulous for the time.

I know what you mean, but a world class designer really should get it right.

For the two members of the RF who are most ridiculed for their fashion choices they really came up trumps for their weddings.

Beatrice in particular has really upped her style game, she looks very elegant these days. If I can make a wedding dress-adjacent observation, the only thing wrong with what she wore for William’s wedding was that awful pretzel hat, which she gamely auctioned for charity. Her actual outfit was lovely.

polkadotdalmation · 02/06/2023 20:47

@Ohpleeeease Unfortunately all you saw and remembered was the hat!

Ohpleeeease · 02/06/2023 20:49

I mean, you couldn’t unsee it…

TammyJones · 02/06/2023 21:02

Princesses Margaret and Queen Elizabeth

BriarHare · 03/06/2023 07:55

I loved both of Meghan’s dresses, especially the evening one. She looked stunning.

Wasn’t keen on Kate’s, although it was perfect for the occasion. The pointy boobs were awful as was the evening fluffy cardigan.

I loved Sarah Chatto’s dress. It was so striking and she looked amazing. She is the most stylish royal imo.

Nono22972 · 05/06/2023 08:21

My favourites are Kate's and Margaret's. Eugenie looked lovely as well

My least favourites are Princess Anne's (second wedding), Meghan's (although her reception dress was stunning) and Diana's

Am I the only one who loves Princess Anne's first wedding dress? And her engagement dress was really beautiful

I loved Sarah Ferguson's at the time. She looked radiant. I loved the flower headdress and shimmer of the satin and the fitting of the bodice.

I didn't like Diana's even when I was 10. I thought she looked like she was wearing someone else's dress and wasn't ready.

I loved the fit of Kate's. It was exquisite, true McQueen cut and fit.

I liked the idea of the simplicity of Megan's but the poor fit made it look just plain.

I loved Beatrice's evening dress at the recent Jordan wedding, and lovely that she wore the York tiara for the first time. I agree she is looking great lately. And her wedding dress and tiara were lovely at the time and particularly poignant now her grandmother has gone.

Me too. I remember watching the wedding on TV - I was 6 years old and very excited!

Proud2care82 · 05/06/2023 12:47

Eugenics looked amazing especially with that gorgeous emerald tiara to go with it.

Dustyblue · 05/06/2023 13:39

I loved Fergie's dress too. It wouldn't look out of place today really, unlike Diana's. That really was of the time 😂

I remember watching the wedding on the telly, when one of the commentators said she looked like an explosion in a parachute factory. Clive James perhaps? My Dad snorted his tea everywhere
