I've probably garbled that, but that's the gist of it.

Why does Harry need to be there at all then?

No idea, but there must be a reason that's important to him. And there might be Other Stuff he needs to do whilst here (eg Invictus HQ is in London)

And addressing people correctly is something the Courts generally do. As he is not using his HRH, then the correct form of address is as a Duke, hence Your Grace or Sir.

I thought Your Grace was considered a bit below stairs, but to be fair I don’t run into that many dukes, and even fewer HRHs…

I offer you this little gem from the last day in court as reported by Sky News blog:

There's a brief moment before we exit the court as legal counsel discuss with the judge how the royal should be addressed in court.
They initially appear to opt for "your grace" followed by "sir" - before agreeing to settle on a final decision before he begins his testimony.

Hadn’t thought about forms of address but I suppose they have to decide on one. Surely the judge won’t be expected to address H as “your Grace”, or indeed “Sir”?

That's how Wallis Simpson was addressed. 'Your Grace'. The Duke of Windsor, who retained his HRH after abdication at the behest of the new King in Letters Patent - specifically excluding Wallis - regarded it as an insult.

Weird world.

Ohpleeeease · 02/06/2023 20:34

I suppose the judge will be able to neatly sidestep by referring to PH in the third person as “your witness”.

mixedrecycling · 03/06/2023 07:33

I thought it was 'just call me Harry' these days? 😂

TrashyPanda · 03/06/2023 13:26

@mixedrecycling - only when it suits him.

... in a week Harry goes into the witness box as the first royal ever to do so!

I still can't bring myself to believe it'll actually happen Confused

Of course we could all get a surprise if he does well, but I honestly don't know how any member of the RF would cope with incisive questions from a professional, especially if it involves his "curated memories having just as much truth as so-called objective facts"

Well, we saw how well PA stood up to (not terribly) incisive questioning by a professional. And she was a journalist, not a lawyer.

He has about as much grace as Gemma Collins on dancing on ice

He doesn't need to be there for the upcoming NGN hearing. He came to the last one to get headlines.

The one this week is against the Mirror group. He needs to be here for that one because it's a full trial and he needs to be cross-examined on his evidence.

Vermin · 05/06/2023 12:34

Harold currently several hours late for his appearance in the witness box. Either thrashing out a settlement to avoid him being thrashed in cross exam or they’ll issue a bench warrant for him to appear🤣

Vermin · 05/06/2023 12:38

Oh he’s not turning up because he decided to host lilibet’s birthday party yesterday afternoon instead. Wait til he discovers that people do kids’ parties not in the actual day - his mind will be comprehensively blown.

mixedrecycling · 05/06/2023 12:49

He managed to fit in Archie's birthday with attending the coronation...

He was told to be in court today (Monday) but didn’t bother leaving California till yesterday evening.

very bad idea.
land the judge is rightly pissed off with him.

how can he behave like this?

Mr Justice Fancourt said he was a "little surprised" that Harry wouldn't be attending court today, after his lawyers said he would be there tomorrow instead.
The judge had asked that the first witness in each of the four test cases appear in court on the first day of their individual case.
"His travel arrangements are such and his security arrangements are such that it is a little bit tricky," Harry's lawyer, David Sherborne, told the court.

They seem to be blaming security and travel - it does come across as a bit arrogant and rules don't apply to me but maybe it's not such a big deal.

Prince Harry accused of 'wasting time' by not giving evidence today - BBC News

Prince Harry is taking action against the Mirror group - but will not appear at the High Court today.

TrashyPanda · 05/06/2023 13:09

From The Guardian:

“Prince Harry’s no-show at the high court has caused a headache for his legal team, who were left explaining that he had chosen to stay in Los Angeles to attend his daughter’s second birthday party, writes media editor Jim Waterson from the high court.
Prince Harry had originally been scheduled to give evidence in his phone-hacking trial against Mirror Group Newspapers on Tuesday. But the judge had asked for him to be in court ready to give evidence on Monday, in case lawyers finished their opening legal arguments earlier than expected.
When the Mirror’s legal team indicated they would speed through their opening arguments, Harry’s team were forced to accept that their client would not be ready in time.
David Sherborne, Harry’s barrister, told the court that his client only left California on Sunday night after prioritising his toddler’s party. As a result Prince Harry would not be available to give evidence in London on Monday afternoon.
Dozens of photographers, television camera crews, and reporters had gathered outside the Rolls Building to capture the arrival of the prince, only to learn he was still dealing with jet lag.
The judge, Mr Justice Fancourt, was visibly irritated by the prince’s failure to be ready to give evidence – although in diplomatic legal language he simply said he was “a little surprised” by the Prince’s absence. Given the case is being heard without a jury, it is considered unwise to anger to annoy the one person who will decide the outcome of the case”

@mixedrecycling he didn’t get to montecito after the coronation until after 8pm (actually I suppose he could have helicopter’d rather than driven from LAX?) so still didn’t make it in time because his flight didn’t land u til 7.30pm and montecito is a good long trot from LA.

TrashyPanda · 05/06/2023 13:11

Is it arrogance or stupidity?

MamoruHisaishi · 05/06/2023 13:12

So typical of Harry. Selfish and arrogant, as always.

Probably both.

MamoruHisaishi · 05/06/2023 13:12

I can't wait for his fans to spin this one.

TripleDaisySummer · 05/06/2023 13:13

TrashyPanda · 05/06/2023 13:11

Is it arrogance or stupidity?

Who knows - but his legal team must have made it very clear to him what the implications might be if he did this.

Serenster · 05/06/2023 13:27

As the newspaper article suggests, a standard motto of litigation lawyers is that you don’t irritate the mind you are seeking to persuade.

I was always side-eying Harry using the courts to further his own personal vendetta (not their purpose) and now he decides that his timetable is more important than that of the judge, the court officers and the lawyers involved. It’s not a good look.

kirinm · 05/06/2023 13:34

Embarrassing for his counsel. Can imagine he'd be a high maintenance client!
