Balcony photo

I have a few questions about this photo.

  1. Everything I have read said it was supposed to be working Royals only on the balcony, but there is Camilla's grandchildren and page boys. Why?
  2. Why this particular pose? I would have thought William and Kate would be in a more prominent position beside Charles and Camilla, instead off way off to the side. So what is the reasoning behind the positioning?

I think it was meant to be less formal to promote a new era

AskMeMore · 09/05/2023 00:04

It does not look informal at all though. Everyone clearly has a position to stand.

Judging by previous threads, there will be someone along soon who is very close to the RF, and will be able to explain the exact thought processes of all those involved!

MaydinEssex · 09/05/2023 00:05

Where is Princess Anne?

HeidiUpTheMountain · 09/05/2023 00:08

I think it’s the coronation party in the centre (like the wedding party, those with roles in the ceremony - bride and groom plus bridesmaids and pages, essentially), plus the working royals to either side.

Losttheplotsometimeago · 09/05/2023 00:11

Who cares?

Lochroy · 09/05/2023 00:11

I don't think it was said it would be working royals on the balcony. The pages and attendants were a core part of the coronation ceremony, so it makes sense they were there.

The working royals photo was done inside: King Charles and Queen Camilla pose in royal regalia for official portraits www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65523802

Anne was there, but evidently not in this specific photo. You can see half of her husband behind Sophie Wessex (Sophie Edinburgh?) and Anne was next to him.

Pretty shit she has to end up in the second row, but that's male line primogeniture for you. At least Princess Charlotte won't be pushed back in the same way.

TeenLifeMum · 09/05/2023 00:12

@MaydinEssex Anne was behind Sophie to the left. She seemed to hang back with I would assume was her choice. The page boys with Camilla (who are her grandchildren) went to move to the right and she called them back. I did think it strange William wasn’t closer to Charles but I think it was that the day was about the King and Queen and the rest of the family were to the sides in the wings.

Flufs · 09/05/2023 00:19

something to do with quick access to the doors and therefore the safer option if a situation arose.

DahliaBlue · 09/05/2023 00:24

I think to highlight King and Queen, otherwise William and Kate would have taken the limelight if next to Chatles and Camills. Lovely photo but a pity Anne did not get into it.

IamThegreaterMole · 09/05/2023 00:27

Wasn’t Anne still on her horse with her regiment when they were all lined up in the garden? Maybe she was a bit behind the others getting to the balcony.

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 09/05/2023 00:33

The king and queen had their cloaks on. Perhaps keeping their attendants close is for logistical cloak-wielding purposes?

AskMeMore · 09/05/2023 00:34

@Lochroy It was said it would only be working Royals as a reason why Harry was not invited to be on the balcony.
It honestly looks as if Camillas family are more important than Charles family.

It really doesn’t. Both sets of pages have equal billing, then Camilla’s supporters in the ceremony, as I said, then all the rest are the king’s family. What are you trying to get at?

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/05/2023 00:46

Because they are their attendants - 4 page boys each, plus Camilla’s two ladies in waiting. They are in the picture directly around the couple same as bridesmaids and pages would be at a wedding.

They put the attendants in the middle to highlight the King and Queen. The day is all about them, so it’s natural the rest of the active royals are at the sides.

No it doesn’t mean Camilla’s family are more important than his, she just happens to have a bunch of grandsons the right age to page. His pages are all kids of godchildren or whatever.

What’s with the overthinking?

Addymontgomeryfan · 09/05/2023 00:50

Watching it on Saturday showed exactly why the pages were stood by the king and queen, those robes needed carrying on entering and exiting the balcony.

The comment about Camilla's family being more important than the Kings is ridiculous, the only members of her family on the balcony were those who had roles at the coronation.

Sugarfree23 · 09/05/2023 00:57

Camillas son, daughter and granddaughter weren't there either.
If they included Harry and kids they'd need to included them too.

AtlasSix · 09/05/2023 00:58

It was said it would only be working Royals as a reason why Harry was not invited to be on the balcony.

The article I read gave that as a reason for Harry not being invited to the balcony, but then the same article said that Prince Edward’s children weren’t working Royals, and they were both on the balcony.

🤣🤣🤣

Prince Edwards son James is only 15 though, so still a child, and Louise is only a few years older which would probably explain them being on the balcony. They have also accompanied their parents many times when they are carrying out official royal duties.

Sugarfree23 · 09/05/2023 01:06

Ed & Wills kids are the minors of working Royals.

Include Harry you need to include Andrew, any other siblings of Camillas, her son, daughter and granddaughter. And the balcony isn't that big

MrsAvocet · 09/05/2023 01:08

There was an interview with Camilla's friend on the BBC highlights programme on Saturday night in which she said that the decision that the page boys and attendants would go on the balcony was last minute. She said that nobody had really realised how difficult it would be to manoevre the trains onto the balcony - I think there was something about the room behind the balcony being renovated so they basically had to pick their way through a building site to get outside and obviously needed someone to carry the trains of their cloaks or whatever they are called through all that. But she said it was a big surprise to them all and that all the boys were very excited about it. So presumably the prior announcements were what was originally planned but it just didn't work out that way.

user1492757084 · 09/05/2023 01:10

It is a delightful photograpjh.
It is a photo of the main Coronation party - King, Queen and attendants and pages.
The working royals to the side.
I love the youngsters looking so excited. It was a big honour for them and I think it is kind for them to be viewing the crowds surrounded by people who have been on the balcony before.
The kids obviously look very welcome. They did a great job.

Christmascracker0 · 09/05/2023 01:16

As pp said, it was a last min decision and necessary for the page boys to be there otherwise C&C would be stuck!

Sugarfree23 · 09/05/2023 01:24

Anyone know why his pageboy were all in red but she had two in navy or black and two in red but not the same outfits as his red pageboys?
