Cost of King Charles Coronation

"Ar least £100m."

Well I for one would have liked a much lower party cost (do we need a grandiose new robe to go with it for instance?) and some of the money going to some of the teachers and nurses in the UK.

It's not bringing me any happiness. Nobody in my family or circle of friends is interested.

Can somebody who says it will bring in more money than it costs give a breakdown of the figures please?

I've spent £14.99 on an Abolish the Monarchy t-shirt so that's my contribution to the cause.

Excellent

ArcaneWireless · 02/05/2023 17:49

It is almost as though folk think it’ll be cancelled if they speak about the cost enough.

I’m sure it is going ahead regardless.

I’m still working all weekend. And I bet there won’t be a coronation chicken sandwich to be had for miles and I will have to navigate those who have been making merry all day on the way home.

Ah well.

Maybe someone will come along to tell me that it is cancelled, I don’t have to work and I can have all the lovely grub I want because their best mate’s granny’s nurse’s cousin twice removed heard it from her dog who tapped it out in Morse code on the kitchen linoleum.

And they were told by the cat.

So many miserable fuckers. Let’s ban anything that’s interesting or colourful or historical because it costs money. By that logic, we should ban Christmas.

But they're not putting on a great deal for that amount of money. The Coronation itself, and then a rather lacklustre concert the following evening. Total, about 8 hours of 'entertainment'. Poor value - hardly a 'long weekend of festivities'.

AskMeMore · 02/05/2023 16:04

The billion generated narrative is bullshit.

It isn’t. Apparently it’s impossible to book a hotel room in central London and prices have doubled. Hospitality and retail will see a boost in income over the weekend. Tourism is up because people want to see the pageantry.

Novella4 · 02/05/2023 18:02

Hotel prices doubled months and months ago - everywhere not just London

They’ve gone through the roof for next weekend if you can find one.

Novella4 · 02/05/2023 18:06

The tourism argument is weak and debunked

  • tourism would get much more if a boost once 'royals'are gone and people can walk around their palaces properly

And even if if it were true that tourism more than pays for the Windsors - who in their right mind sets up their constitution based in the whim of tourists ???

I bought my son a commemorative tin tray.

So it's cost that much.

Not sure you understand how taxes work.

Maireas · 02/05/2023 18:13

"tapped it out in Morse code on the kitchen lino" 😂
I heard that Camilla is going round foodbanks stealing items for the Buckingham Palace buffet.

Maireas · 02/05/2023 18:16

I've heard that Prince Edward and Sophie have been making "Abolish the Monarchy" t-shirts just so that they can make money from Republicans.

ArcaneWireless · 02/05/2023 18:21

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

If Meghan has her head screwed on she can sell her chooky eggs for a fiver a pop. 🐔 🥚 🐓

Love it! Certain to be true - those Windsors - well known for taking the bread from the mouths of the poor.

Maireas · 02/05/2023 18:47

Yes, @ArcaneWireless !! She could!
Sussex specials...better yet, Princess Lilibet's Lil Egg Shop!

polkadotdalmation · 02/05/2023 18:57

Well Charles (duchy of Cornwall) paid for meghans clothes for 2018 or 2019 at £634,000 more than all the royal women of Europe put together). The taxpayer funded the £32 million wedding and first class and private jet flights. £43,000 for a mini honeymoon at heckfield place. Plus a lot of other expenses I'm sure. All for...was it 75 engagements? Less than 2 years though.

Charles has at least put 50 years in and counting 😂n,

ArcaneWireless · 02/05/2023 19:11

It was worth every penny though @polkadotdalmation

At least that is what it said on a banana I received once 😉

Maireas · 02/05/2023 19:19

@ArcaneWireless 😂😂😂😂

HeddaGarbled · 02/05/2023 20:21

Report in the Times today: more than £800 million already spent on the lower Thames tunnel “before a spade has broken ground”.

@AskMeMore

@HeddaGarbled Whataboutery

OK, yes, I take your point.

But when you can be fairly sure that some of that £800 million + (before the construction has even started) will have been given to businesses with (sometimes monetary) connections to Conservative MPs, I do think that some posters are allowing their visceral anti-monarchy sentiments blind them to the people who are taking most of the money that should be being spent elsewhere.

Sleepingbeauty2510 · 02/05/2023 20:25

It's not like a coronation happens very often...I for one can't wait as it's the first in my lifetime and might be the last! Maybe we should not celebrate anything ever, not even major historical events if it costs any amount of money because it could go to the nurses/teachers instead...except it won't.

@Sleepingbeauty2510 - in a nutshell.
If the Coronation were to be cancelled tomorrow, nurses, teachers and junior doctors would not get a pay rise. There would still be food banks. People would not get help with energy bills. It's not that money has been diverted away from worthy causes to fund it, it's a whole other discussion about the economy and it's management.

Tabootle · 03/05/2023 07:34

Well the majority is going on security, some of those people would be being paid regardless and for others, probably a lot of working class people, it's extra money for them. The sad reality is that any event of this magnitude needs a ridiculous amount of security, the alternative is we never have any large scale events in London, but seems pretty miserable. The events industry was also decimated by covid and I'm sure it's a welcome boost to those organising the celebrations.

I agree it sounds a ridiculous amount, but it's not all going into a black hole never to be seen again, a fair amount will go into the pockets of individuals who probably need the money.

Exactly, but it's so much easier to blame others (immigrants, Covid, the Royals, whoever else has gotten the blame over the last 15 years), instead of acknowledging its been poor electoral choices by ourselves as a country that has caused the cost of living crisis.

Yes, this is costing a lot of money (the incident at BP yesterday shows why Security is necessary and costs so much), but it will also bring money into the economy, which we should welcome.

But as my husband said yesterday when we briefly discussed this: "the Brits are just miserable moaning f#ckers".

DartmoorWild · 03/05/2023 07:46

I was in London over the weekend. It was quite sickening actually.

The nurses were out protesting outside St Thomas's trying to save the NHS, whilst on the other side of the bridge they were clearing away homeless people and painting bits of buildings so they would look nice on the telly.

A country that has to rely on food banks to feed normal working people should be a lot more angry about their society. But like sheep we go along with it and are thankful we can have a party and a day off. We need to wake up.

AskMeMore · 03/05/2023 12:20

The reason the security bill is so high is that Charles has invited so many Heads of State and other VIPs from other countries. Even the security bill to get them to their planes to their hotels is high.

And you know this how? I really wish it was a requirement to post proof when these statements are posted so confidently.
