Cost of King Charles Coronation

"Ar least £100m."

Well I for one would have liked a much lower party cost (do we need a grandiose new robe to go with it for instance?) and some of the money going to some of the teachers and nurses in the UK.

La-la-la!

snitzelvoncrumb · 02/05/2023 01:29

My question is why do you put up with it? Make a change, stop the royal family using your tax for the most ridiculous crap.

AskMeMore · 02/05/2023 01:41

The Daily Mirror is reporting the costs have skyrocketed to at least £250 million.
This coronation is costing way more than Elizabeth's did.

The Mirror are also reporting a 'massive £8bn boost to the economy'.........

We are having a big lunch with lots of friends and really looking forward to it.

^ so you can still do this if he has an old (free) robe you know!

It's a worthwhile celebration to celebrate.
Parties and special occasions always cost.
People who will profit will be pubs, accommodation, food outlets, champagne producers and retailers, any British producers of broad beans, eggs, butter, flour, spinach and cream, sellers of bunting, florists, hair dressers, farriers, media outlets uniform tailors, retailers of royal memorabilia. And all people and businesses that comtribute to those industries.

Literally none of what the alleged costs are will trickle down to your pockets if the coronation wasn't happening.

Absolutely! Does anyone really think the government would be spending millions on Food Banks, nurses' and teachers' salaries, and upgrading the NHS if we weren't having a Coronation?
If that's the case what was stopping them doing that before the Queen died and no funeral/coronation in sight?

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 02/05/2023 08:51

In addition to the costs and profits in the UK, I would like to know how much money this is making for the Chinese economy.

All the red, white and blue tat appears to have been made there.

OP I am sorry some people are sim-ply taking the piss. They are doing that because they know there is no way to defend the enormous cost of a ceremony to crown a King.
And they have the cheek to ask the public to volunteer.

No, they’re doing it because suddenly the whole of Mumsnet seem to be top notch accountants who have secret knowledge of what’s been spent, how many jobs have been created, how much income has been generated and what everyone thinks of the Coronation.
Queen E had a secret ISA that she paid into every month precisely for this occasion - after all, she knew it would happen 70+ years ago! And I believe KC111 has started one too ready for when he pops his clogs and William and Kate get to have a go at being in charge.

True, but then the people who are making said robe wouldn’t be getting paid!

Jackienory · 02/05/2023 09:33

....... or you could end up with Trump !.

Upsizer · 02/05/2023 09:47

I think we’ve become blind in this country to large sums of money because we’ve got so used to our government giving billions to their friends etc. so we just shrug.

It is a huge sun of money and I’ve no idea how it can cost so much. It’s perhaps £2 million for each county. Imagine if that was suddenly available for your local charities - it would do a huge amount of good.

Similar for the “Festival of Brexit” and again we all shrugged. I don’t think the country cares any more.

BadgerB · 02/05/2023 10:47

Travel in my area is currently being disrupted by HS2 upheavals. How much is that costing? Probably several coronations-worth of tax-payers money - all so that people can get from the North to London about 25 minutes quicker. That is, if the line ever gets as far as Manchester....

Could argue that we needed a Royal Funeral, and now a Coronation, to bring in the tourist cash in order to pay for the grandiose schemes of our elected government.

polkadotdalmation · 02/05/2023 10:57

HS bloody 2! Not reached us yet, and I hope it's cancelled. All that money should have been put into upgrading the entire rail system.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 02/05/2023 11:02

Jackienory It is such a weak cop out to suggest it is either the Windsors or Trump.

Have you not noticed that there are quite a few countries round the globe which have neither a Trump-style figurehead nor an ego-tripping monarch?

Sudeko · 02/05/2023 11:44

There have been a few, spendy royal events back-to-back over the past couple of years and it is unclear whether this is a new trend to whip up pro royal sentiment or absolutely, unavoidable and value for money.

AskMeMore · 02/05/2023 13:56

It is a total waste of money.

HeddaGarbled · 02/05/2023 14:13

Report in the Times today: more than £800 million already spent on the lower Thames tunnel “before a spade has broken ground”.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 01/05/2023 19:52

How much of the ‘billion‘ generated will make its way into the mouths of those who can’t affords to feed their kids? I’m sure they’d rather see the real return of the £250 million spent.

It’s a horrific, tone deaf, classist, ego driven pile of shite.

Oh my gosh THIS THIS THIS.

I can't bear the "it will bring in one billion". FOR WHO??

the whole thing is abhorrent.
Down with the Monarchy.

MsWhitworth · 02/05/2023 14:21

So many miserable fuckers. Let’s ban anything that’s interesting or colourful or historical because it costs money. By that logic, we should ban Christmas.

AskMeMore · 02/05/2023 14:25

If the wealth generated by tourism etc etc. does not find it's way "into the mouths of those who can’t affords to feed their kids?" that is something you should take up with your elected government.

AskMeMore · 02/05/2023 16:04

The billion generated narrative is bullshit.

BettyfromBristol · 02/05/2023 17:29

MsWhitworth you're right. I'd be happy for Christmas to be banned, apart from the Christians who need to do the Jesus bit. Complete waste of tat. Yes, I'm one of your miserable fuckers, out and proud 😂
