Part 2: The Press & The Royals a discussion

Following on from this thread: Part 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_royal_family/4786923-the-press-the-royals-a-discussion?page=1

As we know, the press often manufacture stories to create divisions between the women in the family, more often than the men. They have also hacked private communications, with cases ongoing. The public seem to feed off this and none of the family get treated very well except the monarch-although not always.

For discussion: do we think it is possible for the royal family to stay relevant and in the publics mind without their unhealthy relationship with the media, and how can they achieve that? How will previous and current legal proceedings alter the relationship?
Please do not intentionally derail this thread by discussing your personal dislike of particular family members or if they deserve it. I would really like to continue this discussion on how the royal family and the press interact, as above.

The conversation with Charlotte Church is interesting, because Piers was actually warning her and telling her how to avoid having her phone hacked

Morgan: "You can access, access their voicemail. Just by tapping in a number. Are you really telling me that journalists aren’t going to do that? If they know they can ring up Charlotte Church’s mobile phone, listen to all her messages…"
Church: "My God".
Morgan: "Right, now all you have to do and I know it’s hard because celebrities don’t like doing anything for themselves is actually change your security number."
Church: "Yeah, I’ve changed my security number".
Morgan: "And now you don’t have to worry".

So he clearly knew how the practice worked in 2003. That’s not proof that he engaged in the practice himself, however.

When the phone hacking scandal unfolded and the enquiries started, everyone who was following the investigation and court cases were having discussions about how, in practice, you hack someone’s phone. Because it sounds like something quite complex, but in reality it’s breathtakingly simple - someone just had to come up with the idea in the first place. I had several conversations with people about how it worked, for example, at the time. Luckily they weren’t overheard or filmed, or I might now be being accused of having engaged in it myself!

Did you ever hear the story of Steve Nott? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14431473

Phone-hacking whistleblower Steven Nott went unheard

A salesman from Wales describes how his attempts to raise the alarm in 1999 about the possible interception of mobile phone voicemail backfired.

However, his obsession with Meghan took a very nasty turn. And he has lived and breathed it since.

I always got an uncomfortable vibe from Piers. And it hit really weird vibes for me when his wife, Celia Walden started to get in on the act.

If their life were a movie, it would be a creepy but cheap thriller on Netflix in which two married journalists get obsessed with a young woman that the man met once, and both start stalking her, ending with both of them chasing her in the rain before they both fall down an empty lift shaft.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/05/2023 11:11

Wow, they’re actually going to argue members of the royal family gave them information?

I'm not sure why not? After all it's massively reported that the RF trade info just like the rest, so having it officially evidenced would hardly be a surprise

😂 they are very stalker-ish with her. I think even those that dislike Meghan think Morgan has behaved in a very inspiring way.

@Dolma thanks for sharing that story! I’m gobsmacked. I had never heard it before, I think everyone here will be interested in that.

I have wondered if the strain that people said they saw in Camilla had nothing to do with the magic hat party but more about this week's court testimony

William doing a deal ( yes I know private individuals do deals but he is rich and high profile - he could have taken a stand - he did not take a stand ) and Harry fighting in court is a bad look

Whaeanui · 11/05/2023 11:16

@Puzzledandpissedoff yes you’re probably right, maybe I’m just naive in thinking they wouldn’t do it if it were true out of fear of no longer receiving such info again or because it’s the royals. But that’s probably silly of me to think at this point!

The evidence from both parties as to who got what and from where/whom is going to be very interesting.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 11/05/2023 11:17

You were right first time. @Whaeanui Those that dislike Meghan think that Piers has behaved in an inspiring way!!

@Puzzledandpissedoff I thought the dominant narrative was that Harry was lying when he said members of the family leaked and planted stories about him?

For a news group to now admit that he was not wrong is a departure from that narrative surely.

Novella4 · 11/05/2023 11:18

I meant Harry fighting the media and taking them on

He will ( or had already I don't know) explain how the 'royals ' have back room deals re good publicity and suppressing the truth about other incidents

This image protection is linked to the suppression of peaceful protest on coronation day .

It's all about management of image

Didn't the mail run a story that rape alarms would be used to frighten horses a week before ?
Where would they get that info ?

Mumsnut · 11/05/2023 11:19

Camilla had allegedly put her back out in the week leading up to the Coronation and was very uncomfortable

Novella4 · 11/05/2023 11:21

Yes I remember Harry's assertion that royals leak stories was dismissed as lies

This is why he wrote what he did about himself in Spare

They will have nothing on him now

The 'royals ' have a lot to lose

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/05/2023 11:26

I thought the dominant narrative was that Harry was lying when he said members of the family leaked and planted stories about him?

Not from anyone with sense it wasn't; it's a cesspit which they're all willing to swim in, and I see no reason to exempt tthe RF from that

And I wouldn't say you were naive about what they're capable of, Whaeanui ... over hopeful perhaps, but definitely not naive Smile

Whaeanui · 11/05/2023 11:32

@Puzzledandpissedoff thank you… I remain hopeful I guess and despite what people think, I actually feel sorry for the whole family and feel like they have no good choices when it comes to the press.

I don't know how anyone could think that the RF don't leak stories to the press, surely it's well known? It's a case of handing out a morsel of something to get some good press back. Now, as to the extent of it, who knows, maybe it will all come to light a bit in this case. I imagine the RF are bricking it.

Meanwhile... here is K&W's former Press Secretary/Private Secretary Jason Knauf receiving Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order gong from William yesterday. I think this tells us all we need to know. He is pals with Dan Wootton and undoubtedly fed him stories. Dan Wootton said so on camera without naming names.

Yes I got creeped out around 2019 and stopped tuning in and Im aware he was even worse in 2020. His nastiness knows no bounds - off the charts. He's completely sabotaged.

TKMaxx takes times. Lots of time. I used to work in fashion at one point and I can look at an outfit and immediately know whether it will fit or not, so it's a dream for me, I can get through the racks at breakneck speed! I also know all about the codes on the price labels, whether they are made for TKM, genuine bargains, previous year stock, about to be reduced more etc. Don't start me off... my DD is even worse than me!

Well we know what your special subject will be on Mastermind.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 11/05/2023 11:44

Jason Knauf, who (along with Thomas Markle) offered to testify for the Daily Mail against Meghan.

Who leaked the Meghan bullying allegations to Valentine Low just before the Oprah interview.

Who put out a statement in William and Harry's name ... without consulting Harry.

Well done to him, the good and faithful servant! He has found a worthy master.

Yes and to be honest I still feel taken a back at the toxicity and lack of morality - the way they carry on like this. Very cultish behaviour..

Wasn't there something recently about Eugenie and Beatrice meeting up with Piers Morgan? I think there was a thread on here about it. Harry seemed relaxed with them from the clips I've seen but it seemed strange for them to be all friendly with him when they are close to H&M.

Yes I saw clips of them hugging Piers. Was so disappointing to see. I have to assume they are all in survival mode - getting by best they can. Its brutal.

Whaeanui · 11/05/2023 12:03

@Iwasafool I think all of the connections are a bit incestuous. I saw this chart on twitter a while ago showing the various connections between politicians, journalists and royals. It makes me shudder when I think of how small the group is that holds power in this country and how they all know each other.

Yes, there was - apparently they met up with him in a pub or something - but then the sisters also seem to get a free pass over who they associate with, probably because nobody wants to blame them for who their father is

A pity, than, that there are still questions over them receiving money from Epstein and Selman Turk ...
